They even take it a step further and globally source these ingredients via some wonderful fair trade-type agreement that helps build up the economies and welfare of developing villages and the people who live work there. Aveda was one of the biggest ones I had issue with. They stem from an Ayurvedic tradition, which I love, their products smell amazing and feel great, and then I found parabens and other ingredients that are known to be dangerous on their labels. I was shopping with my mom last night and saw an Aveda store in the mall. They have a really pretty little glossary of the natural ingredients they use (guess they couldn’t find pretty little pictures of the chemical ingredients), and lots of happy anecdotes about their Fair Trade program, but no lists that show all of the ingredients that are in all of the products. So I decided that since the store was right there, and it had been awhile since I’d checked them out I would go in and investigate. I picked up a few products and did not see any parabens or other particularly harmful ingredients. I did see phenoxyethanol , which is another preservative that is not the best option, but is still far better than parabens or formaldehyde-releasing agents. This is a good sign…” I picked up bottle after bottle, jar after jar and still did not see any parabens. I politely thanked her, said I was very glad to hear that, grabbed my mother and left (but not without a sample of their delicious herbal tea). I am very glad they have come around and I am hopeful that some of their competitors will follow suit. July 21, 2013–Edited to add–As per the comments below, I’m receiving feedback that some Aveda products do, in fact, still contain parabens and other harmful ingredients. Update 2014: This frustration with the lack of proper natural skincare products lead me to start teaching aestheticians and other students how to create their own customised skincare products for their clients in my skincare class. Learn to make boutique skincare products that feel and work just as well–if not BETTER–than the generic products on store shelves.

Aveda. For "Aveda," a song by Hot Hot Heat, see Make Up the Breakdown . Aveda Corporation is a company founded by Horst Rechelbacher , now owned by Estée Lauder Companies , headquartered in the Minneapolis suburb of Blaine, Minnesota . Aveda product. Aveda (pronounced ah-vay-da) was founded by Horst Rechelbacher in 1978. According to the company's website, "Aveda" is Sanskrit for "all knowledge". Aveda also maintains a variety of partnerships with salons and spas that use their products. Aveda has an ongoing partnership with the Yawanawa Tribe of the Brazilian Amazon . Aveda has financed the construction of and training for a babassu processing facility, a soap-making facility and a paper press for processing babassu fibers. In 2009 Aveda (as a subsidiary of Estée Lauder Companies Inc.), was included by the Palestinian rights organization, the BDS Campaign , as one of the "Top Ten Brands to Boycott This Christmas". In 2011 Aveda was slammed at Park City, Utah during the Evolution of Women in Social Media conference, also known as evo'11 , for announcing their no payment policy for bloggers reviewing their products. Aveda was also criticized for using the brand name "Indigenous", as a denigration of indigenous peoples.
All of the Aveda shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, make-up and skin care products are made from natural plant-based ingredients. Benefits of Aveda Skin Care Products. Aveda skincare products are available for all skin types, and do contain a complete anti-aging treatment selection. One of the key advantages of Aveda skin care products is its availability at local spas, salons and the internet. Aveda spas are also launching around the country, and are designed to feature only Aveda's premium products and unique formulas. Drawbacks of Aveda Skin Care Products. In a word, Aveda skin care products are expensive. When compared to other leading brands at the beauty counter, Aveda skin care products cost significantly more. Another drawback of Aveda skin care products is the lack of flexibility to customize your skin care regiment. Aveda skin care products are not available in sets or kits at this time, so purchasing the full size bottle of each product is required. Aveda skin care products are priced significantly higher than the competition, and consumers may simply be purchasing the brand. However, the skin care products are made with quality ingredients and may help some manage troubled skin.

Many of us love to use essential oils in the air as aromatherapy and topically. Our skin is after all, the largest organ in our bodies and thus an important organ to care for as holistically as possible. Phrases like “Active Ingredients,” “Key Ingredients” and “Natural” are emblazoned across labels in bold print to distract us from investigating the small print of what is really in the product. These bright bottles with splashy labels are made with undesirable ingredients and futile fillers that our skin can certainly do without. Some ingredients and some products are better than others, so I have created a top ten list of commonly used ingredients that our skin, our cells, can thrive without! Mercury is not used in big amounts either and as a labeled bio-hazard, mercury devastates the cells. Look for sodium benzoate at the end of the ingredients list of skincare, toothpaste and mouth wash. The ingredients in the ingredients, like the preservatives in aloe, are called “secondary ingredients,” and they can be, and usually are, allowed to be left off the label. Aloe vera is wonderful for the skin, and fortunately aloe makes a great, easy to grow houseplant because that is the best source for pure aloe skin care. Simply break off a leaf and rub the pulp into skin. I like to mix my favorite serum with the aloe pulp in my palm and massage it into my skin before bed. Because aqueous solutions are vulnerable to spoilage, preservatives (like paraben, sodium benzoate and Leucidal Liquid) must be added to the product. Everything that is applied to the skin is absorbed in to the bloodstream, circulates to our cells and mingles with our mitochondria. When applying the right things, we can literally feed our immune system and skin cells.
The process used in the manufacturing of the skin products is environmentally friendly. The natural ingredients used in the many Aveda skin and other aveda salon products are impressive and diverse. In addition, there are aveda products specifically for the skin.
With that said, it is still unknown how the efficacy of a 2% ascorbyl glucoside formulation compares to a 15% ascorbic acid solution. What is known is that ascorbyl glucoside does have antioxidant activity, as a 2006 study in The Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society verifies its significant antioxidant activity using flow injection analysis on a copper-enriched printed circuit board, and a very recent 2009 study in Skin Research and Technology demonstrates that 2% ascorbyl glucoside and 3.5% niacinamide in combination has significant lightening effect on the skin, which is enhanced further with physician-administered ultrasound treatments (to increase absorption of the ingredients in the skin). Glucosamine in combination with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants may also be somewhat helpful in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. According to a 2001 study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment , glucosamine and antioxidant oral supplements reduced the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by a statistically significant 35% amongst 53 women when taken daily. It was, however, also noted in the study that the oral supplement did not increase skin’s hydration, and only decreased the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One final word about glucosamine: in a 2002 study published in the journal Dermatology amongst 50 women of Asian descent with solar lentigines, it was found that a stabilized soy extract was better at lightening the spots than either a combination of 5% ascorbyl glucosamine , 1% kojic acid and hydroxyacid esters or a 20% azelaic acid formulation. Fucoidan also increases the rates in which matrix metalloproteinases associate with their inhibitors …and yes, if you are thinking that this sounds like Patricia Wexler’s skin care line, which attempts to preserve collagen by preventing collagen breakdown with matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, you would be correct! Unfortunately, these findings are limited to cell culture and have not been applied to any clinical studies as of yet (as least not any that I have been able to find!) With that said, brown algae (and fucoidan extract) may be a promising ingredient in the future, depending on what future research studies demonstrate. Salicyclic Acid to Improve the Absorption of Other Ingredients. Brannon, a family-practice physician with a specialty in Dermatology, this means that beta hydroxy acid is able to penetrate into the pores better than many other ingredients. According to Derm Net NZ , salicylic acid works by penetrating into the skin and softening keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. This helps to loosen dry scaly skin, increasing cell turnover and effectively renewing the skin. In conjunction with ascorbyl palmitate , glucosamine, and brown algae, salicyclic acid may help the other ingredients penetrate the skin better , increasing their efficacy.

Aveda, part of the Estee Lauder Companies since 1997, offers natural-themed products that have evolved from a simple premise: what you put on your body should be as healthy and natural as what you put into it. In fact, many of the essential oils used in Aveda products have a documented history of unpleasant side effects, including allergies, phototoxic reactions, and dermatitis. Aveda would truly like you to believe that it is in fact the flower and plant essences in its products that are doing the "work." If that were true, why bother using so many of the industry-standard ingredients seen in products from other cosmetics companies? Many of the highlighted plant ingredients merely contribute to the fragrance of the products. It has also been well established that once many of these plants and oils are purified and processed for use in cosmetics, they retain very little of their original benefit—though that doesn't mean they are worthless ingredients for skin. Furthermore, the manner in which Aveda discusses many of their plant ingredients on their Web site speaks more to historic and folkloric use rather than to published research that establishes a genuine benefit. It may seem intriguing to consumers that some plants have been "used for centuries to cleanse the skin and hair," but lots of things used a long time ago would be a problem today, including lead in cosmetics, not using sunscreen, absence of barrier repair substances and cell-communicating ingredients, and on and on. The company has many programs in place that support its mission statement of caring for the world we live in and giving back to society. What needs to happen to complement the philanthropy is a focus on weeding out the troublesome plant ingredients (perhaps saving them for use in their scented candles instead), and creating products built around plants whose benefits for skin are unquestionable because they are supported by substantiated research rather than referring to cultural traditions. They aren't as much of a beauty bargain as they were, but the improvements justify the expense and they still cost less than many department-store brushes. Yes, most of the products contain plenty of plant extracts, emollients, and waxes. However, they're working in concert with many of the unnatural ingredients that are required to create modern textures and silky applications. The new Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment to help you find the best products possible for your skin.
This red seed pigment (also known as uruku) has long been used in ceremonies to connect with the spirit, and in daily life to offer protection from the elements. Annatto oil, also drawn from the Brazilian urukum tree, has been used for centuries to condition hair and skin—and now adds moisture and smoothness to our Uruku formulas. From the nut of the fruit of the Argan tree, which is indigenous to South Morocco, and grows in the arid countryside at the edge of the Sahara Desert. The Brazil nut tree is one of the tallest and oldest trees in the Peruvian jungle—and the source of a rich protein complex used in our Color Conserve™ Strengthening Treatment . Fibers from the plant are infused with resin for our Refillable Lip Color Case and the handles of our Flax Sticks™ Professional Makeup Brushes. Buriti oil comes from the fruit of the buriti palm tree, which is known as the Tree of Life. Buriti oil is extremely moisturizing, so it’s ideal for reviving dry hair in dry remedy™ moisturizing shampoo , conditioner , masque and daily moisturizing oil . A native to the Amazon, it grows symbiotically with other trees and crops—which makes it ideal for agroforestry systems that help reforest clear-cut lands and replenish nutrients to the soil. For centuries green tea has been used to help beautify skin and fight the effects of aging. Also the source of an aromatic, smoothing wax, jasmine is used for our Petal Essence™ eye. Native to the Americas, Passion Fruit grows on a vine and has a tough rind like a pomegranate. We use the oil from the seeds in pure abundance™ style-prep™ —it's part of our botanical blend that helps boost volume and thicken fine, limp strands. Today, Aveda sustainably sources quinoa for the protein in our Damage Remedy™ restructuring hair care. Experience the benefits in our Rosemary Mint Shampoo and Conditioner , Shampure™ Shampoo and Conditioner. The wheat protein blend is also used in our be curly™ shampoo / conditioner / style-prep™ expands when hair is wet and retracts when hair is dry to enhance curl or wave.
It amazes me how many women are attracted to Aveda makeup and skin care products. Aveda products are known throughout the beauty industry and popular among salons and beauty schools. The products range from makeup and skincare to hair care products. The impressions we have formed of Aveda makeup, skin care and haircare products are primarily from the services we received over the years in beauty salons such as facials, manicures, pedicures, and hair colorings. And yet, they continue to dump toxic chemicals into the Aveda line. Phenylenediamine, resorcinol, along with fragrance, slicylic acid, and ethyl lactate which causes skin, eye, or lung irritation are some of the not so natural ingredients in Aveda products. They have a general “ingredients list” on the Aveda website. The ingredients they list are natural. On the website….”Aveda products show that what you put on your body should be as healthy and natural as what you’d put into it.”
The two products are Elysian Moisturizer and Elysian Revitalizer . It was one of the few products on the market that had Vitamin C in the right consistency and dosage.
