The high arch lifts her face and eyes and they are rough and ready enough to look natural but well groomed. Never test foundation on the back of your hand — this area ages more quickly and a tone that matches here will be completely the wrong colour for your face. Beautiful: Vanessa Redgrave, 76, and Demi Moore, 50, both know how to make the most of their looks. Apart from brands like Guerlain and Clinique — which do the best finely milled bronzers — Bourjois is the only High Street brand with a matt bronzer free from glitter and shimmer, which can look wrong on an older face. A small brush can direct colour to specific places to shape and contour the face. Her skin looks natural and never too orange. We used a lip liner in the same shade to enhance and enlarge her natural lip line. Use good eyeliner and pull the eyebrow as high as you can. The Best Skin Care Routine for an Over 40 Woman. You used to be able to wash your face and go, but lately your skin has needed a little extra help. If possible, consult a dermatologist to create the best strategy for your skin type, and ask your doctor about lifestyle changes which benefit your skin, as well as your overall health. Older skin experiences the decreased production of collagen and elastin, the two elements responsible for firmness in younger skin. Your skin also produces less natural oil, so it can't "plump up" those fine lines the way it used to. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser in the morning and evening, or just at night if you have excessively dry skin. Exfoliating your skin once a week if you have dry skin and up to twice a week for an oily complexion may help diminish fine lines and help your skin absorb moisturizing masks and creams. A weekly steam and mask may also be helpful, especially if you use a mask geared to your skin type. Your skin care routine should extend to prevention, as well as repair and maintenance. Helpful foods to keep skin healthy include lean proteins and fruits and grains with the vegetables B 3, A, C and E.

One in the eye for anti-wrinkle creams. Study claims the majority of eye creams don't actually work. Should the manufacturers be taken to task over their wild claims? The more gullible among us may have fallen for the swanky packaging and the seductive claims on the box. The claim will have bosses of the global billion-pound face cream industry weeping into their fancy lotions and potions. So if you are scrutinising the crows' feet that have deepened since your summer brush with the sunshine, don't be misled by the expensive advertising campaigns of the pricey eye creams, which may have better packaging and more luxurious ingredients but won't necessarily work better. As consumers should we be surprised by the findings, and should skin cream manufacturers be taken to task for their wildly inaccurate claims?
For damage control, here's our edit of creams, balms and moisturisers that will weatherproof your skin. This waterless moisturiser has been created with the sole purpose of protecting the skin's barrier, which harsh winter conditions compromise, leaving skin dehydrated and sensitised. Which is exactly why the skincare brand put said actives in a franchise of quenching creams (available in three versions including an Ultra-Rich version for super dry skin and an oil-free Treatment version for combination/oily, but dehydrated, skin). Winter skin loves it for the way it uses a barley and wheat germ extract to rehydrate skin and build up the skin's barrier so it won't lose more moisture than it needs to. The organic option for anyone who suffers from red, angry and sore skin every winter. Skin struggles in winter with the constant switch from dry, central heating to cold, blustery and wet weather. A great choice if your skin tends to look tired, stressed and dull as soon as winter comes along, this balmy cream uses encapsulated pigments that create a sheer, blurring, anti-fatigue effect. "Poor water circulation in your face is responsible for the loss of your skin's 'fresh' look," says Vichy, which is never more obvious than at winter when our skin loses more moisture than at any other time of year. We're not counting on such extreme conditions over here, but what the tests did go to prove was that this Ultra cream, which harnesses natural ingredients including Glacial Glycoprotein Extract from Antarctica and Desert Plant Extract, moisturises the skin whatever the weather throws at it for 24 hours straight, and best of all, in a light and non-sticky formula. The added bonus is that this cream seals in moisture, but does it all with a matt finish (a godsend for thirsty oily/combination skins) which also makes it a wonderful primer upon which to add your winter base.

Your best face: Beautiful skin at 40 and beyond. The best skin of your life may well be ahead of you. Sure, with each passing decade, you face fresh challenges in your quest for a radiant complexion: There are the newfound crow's feet in your 40s, the postmenopausal dryness in your 50s, and the sagging that sets in by your 60s. "These days, it's perfectly reasonable to expect your skin to get better as you age — no matter what the date on your driver's license," says Dr. "Botox retrains your muscles, so the effects last longer and longer," says Goldberg. The average age of menopause is 51, and with the drop in hormones, skin becomes parched and brown spots increase. Plump lines and lips: Filling materials injected into your skin enhance hollow areas. Both Restylane and Juvederm last about 6 months and are ideal for plumping the smile lines, lips, and under-eye area. The skin cells around these dots are spared and help the treated areas heal more quickly. The upper layers of skin struggle to retain moisture, oil production slows, and dark spots are more pronounced. Bone loss, particularly in the lower part of the face, creates jowls, says Beer, and the area below your cheekbones and your temples may look sunken. In a recent study, side effects (including redness, swelling, and flaking of the skin) subsided in about 5 days. The skin is painted with a photosensitizing acid, which is activated with light; a chemical reaction destroys abnormalities in skin — removing both visible AKs and precancer cells. Sunscreen, the ultimate skin saver: There's no question that UV exposure makes you look older than your years.

The future face of 40: Botox, fillers and high-tech face creams all mean the Big Four-0 doesn't look like it used to. 'Forty, fat and frumpy' was the tag that women dreaded, not least because it was so often true. Botox and wrinkle-fillers, skin peels and Smart Lipo - procedures that hadn't been invented a generation ago - are becoming the norm, to the extent that many women in their 40s appear peculiarly ageless. Cindy Crawford and Demi Moore have 'forever faces' (though Cindy has had the grace to admit that she owes the quality of her skin to her cosmetic surgeon). The 'are you really 40 generation: Rachel Weisz, Kylie Minogue and Renee Zellweger have made efforts to ensure they look at least 10 years younger than they really are. There will be machines that can use combined laser technology to tackle pigmentation and resurface skin at the same time. L'Oreal has been working on hair re-pigmentation technology for years and hopes to have the results on sale within a decade. Along with their teenage daughters, they are addicted to Grazia and pore over the weekly charts of top new looks. Pilates, Fit Flops and low GI are the staples of the 'are-you-really-40?' generation. And the savvy ones may also be getting their hormone levels checked out, too. That, I suspect, will depend on who you are, your personal values and how rich you are. If you can afford the work, and attitudes towards it continue to become more permissive, then, unless you insist on ageing gracefully, why not? And in the future, if you can't afford any work, it's going to show, in the way that today in the U. Any dermatologist will tell you that the lines that show up when you're 40 are the result of everyday exposure to daylight. By the time they're 40, they will be laughing.
“In your late 20s to mid-30s, you enter a pre-aging,” says New York dermatologist Dr. At this stage, you might start to notice lines around your eyes and mouth, or dark spots from sun damage. It’s also a scavenger of sun damage.” And because retinol helps shed pore-clogging dead skin, it can help clear up the adult acne that you may get at this stage in life. Since air pollution and UV rays are sources of free radicals (molecules that damage living cells and cause aging), protect skin with a layer of antioxidants before you leave the house. “You’re literally creating a shield on the skin so no free radicals can touch the skin,” says Dana Nicolette, national trainer and brand ambassador for Amorepacific. Sunscreen on your face is a must. To avoid suffocating your skin with multiple products, try a moisturizer that doubles as a sunscreen with benefits. “You have to get in a good habit of putting [sunscreen] on your neck and your hands,” says Mariwalla. At this stage, you don’t need products that promise to increase collagen production or stimulate youth proteins, since your skin is already relatively young and resilient. And if your skin isn’t overly dry, you don’t need heavy moisturizing ingredients, either.

With a promise that big, we'll give you the answer up front: night cream. Slathering on a quality night cream before you go to sleep can lead to clearer, smoother, glowier skin. Now all you have to do is peruse their reviews and decide which of the many options you'll love. Pick a cream that works with your skin type. You want to add moisture while you sleep (it's the best time to do so since you can look greasy for a bit without being in public), but oily or combination skin needs less hydration than dry skin. So be patient, and don't forget to apply the product every night. If you're only in bed for three hours, that night cream isn't getting much time to work its magic. Now, without further ado, check out these reviews to find the best night cream for you. By brendalea Monday, March 4, 2013 at 03:51 PM Report as inappropriate. Gotta say that the Roc Night Time Cream is fabulous! By brendalea Monday, March 4, 2013 at 03:46 PM Report as inappropriate. I have dry and very sensitive skin, and not many skin creams work for me; Neutrogena's Continuous Hydration Ageless Essentials is a good match for my skin, but not for night use. Well worth having if you like to vary your face creams and try something new, but don't expect it to be a thick night cream. Go ahead and use these Night Creams, but make sure you sleep on a Dream Skin pillowcase, it's not a silk pillowcase or satin. This pillowcase will keep the cream and moisture in your skin all night long.
Scientists say they have clinical proof that a face cream available on the high street does reduce wrinkles. This moisturiser is a richer version of its Protect & Perfect Beauty Serum that the team tested before and found it stimulated the production of fibrillin-1, a protein that promotes elasticity in the skin which is lost with sun damage. Although his University of Manchester team only tested one brand of anti-ageing cream, Professor Griffiths said similar products available on the market would probably also work. The volunteers applied the cream each night to the face, wrists and forearms. As expected, the Boots cream increased fibrillin production. After six months of daily use, 43% of people using the product were found to have some extra clinical improvement in their wrinkles compared to 22% of people using a basic moisturiser. This equates to one in five people using the cream having some extra benefit over plain moisturisers. At this point in the trial all of the volunteers were told which cream they had been using and were offered the opportunity to continue to take the anti-ageing cream - and all of the treatment group took it. Approximately one in five people using the cream will get something extra for their money over plain moisturisers. Professor Griffiths said he was surprised by his findings, published in the British Journal of Dermatology, and stressed that they were independent, although the work received funding from Boots. Nina Goad of the British Association of Dermatologists said: "Approximately one in five people using the cream will get something extra for their money over plain moisturisers.
The beauty giant reckons it has found the Holy Grail of youthful skin with a formula that guards against harmful UVA rays and has anti-ageing ingredients. Research by the chain found daily exposure to sunlight can prematurely age unprotected skin by several years, even on car journeys or walks in the park. And eight out of ten women had no idea that they should be protecting their skin every day as well as in the summer. “Consumers need to know they should protect their skin on a daily basis in the battle against UVA damage. “This new cream puts the spring back into skin.”
Makeup Tricks for Women Over 40 (That I Learned The Hard Way) The Primer Trick 4 of 16. And I know most of us have learned this before we turned 40, but make sure you blend well at the jawline. I then take the hairdryer and use it to warm up the eyelash curler. Then I use the curler as close to my eyelid as I can, and crimp them for a good 15 seconds. This trick is probably the most important one I know for looking younger. On days I don't want to wear full makeup, I'll just do the eyes and mascara and lipstick and I look okay. The Eyeshadow Trick 8 of 16. The Eyeliner Trick 9 of 16. So I got a tub of waterproof eyeliner that is about the consistency of mud, and use a small angled brush to apply the eyeliner to my upper eyelid. For years I just used what came with the makeup, and I have to say using good brushes REALLY helps in application. The Mascara Trick 14 of 16. You don't have to do this in fact, leaving the powder on and then putting mascara over it can make your lashes much fuller but I do because I already have pretty full lashes. I've used this brand for ten years, and I love the way it lasts. Also, this makeup was for going out in the evening.
Five reasons you probably don't use a retinoid (and why you should consider it). You have no idea what a retinoid is. You don't want to go to the dermatologist. While prescription formulas yield the most impressive results, an over-the-counter retinoid, called retinol, can also improve lines and discoloration. You think a retinoid will make your skin sun-sensitive. "The ingredient itself is sensitive to sunlight, which is why you should apply it before bed at night." A retinoid shouldn't make your skin any more vulnerable to UV rays than it would be after buffing away dead skin with a face scrub. For the first two weeks, apply a retinoid every third night, says Leslie Baumann, MD, director of the Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute at the University of Miami (who uses Atralin). If your skin isn't irritated, ramp up to every other night for two weeks. A few other irritation-mitigating guidelines: Wait 15 minutes after washing your face before you apply a retinoid, and use one pea-size dab to cover your whole face. Don't use a retinoid if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Waxing can cause excess redness on retinoid-treated skin; don't use a retinoid for several days before a treatment. A small percentage of people with ultrasensitive skin can never tolerate a retinoid; if you're one of them, use a gentle physical exfoliator twice a week to soften your skin, and be extra-conscientious about sunscreen to prevent collagen loss in the first place.
