It’s ok, I’m at peace with it, and I’m just going to do my best from the outside working in. This means that my skin is thinner than that of folks from many other parts of the world and that I will end up looking like a crumpled paper bag in time if I skip sunscreen. In the course of treating my acne I need to make sure that I don’t overexfoliate my skin and that I use sunscreen every day. If my skin is feeling peely and stressed due to exfoliation in places, I’ll keep up with my routine, but only on the places that are tolerating it well. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about 30 seconds to move on to the next step. I apply the first essence with a Purederm Micro Fiber pad to keep from applying too much product and to make sure that the application is even across my face. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about one minute to move on to the next step. Two pumps cover my face and dry in about two minutes, leaving my skin not exactly sticky, but sort of thirsty for the next steps. I like to layer just about anything related to acne treatment and healing on in this step, one after the other, from lightest in thickness to heaviest. I always try to wear a moisturizer—my hope is that by the end of my routine my skin is balanced and happy, and still able to handle a light cream. My skin gets two rounds of exfoliation, once in the morning and once at night, so it’s essential that I protect all that new skin I’m exposing by applying sunscreen at the end of my morning routine.

Since I lived in Korea during the time my acne got worse and my mother is Korean, she’s the one who recommended and ordered these Korean skin care products for me. This is the most important step in keeping your skin hydrated and helping the products absorb into the skin. I keep the skin wet and pat my face to help my skin absorb some of the water. This is my day routine, at night it’s the same except I’ll also use eye cream to help reduce eye bags and prevent any future eye wrinkles. The AC Clinic Anti Trouble toner’s name is technically just “SKIN 79 AC Clinic Anti Trouble” but it is a toner since it states so on the back of the product. The 2nd product from this line is the SKIN 79 AC Clinic Anti Trouble Lotion. This product claims to be a “soothing lotion caring trouble by keeping balance of water and oil” (not the best English, but excusable since this is an Asian product and I like it nonetheless). This product isn’t too thick or oily and actually absorbs into the skin quickly. It takes care of my normal skin areas (my forehead and cheeks), but for my chin and nose, it’s not moisturizing enough so I also use a cream for that area. Apparently this product is pretty pricey (at least for me, at around $35 USD), but my mom is the one who tried this ISA KNOX line, liked it, and bought the set for me to also try out. It will sit on top of the skin when first applied, but give it about a minute and it’ll absorb and feels great! I like that this comes in a tube since it’s more sanitary and won’t taint the product as easily (unlike the ultra moisture cream, where it is in a tub). Most lip balms are waxy and just sits on top of my lips, but this one actually absorbs (unless my lips are ultra dry in which it will just sit on top of the dry, cracked skin).
I asked Alice all kinds of questions about what’s trending in Korea, what her personal must-have products are, and what trends are on the way out. For the story – one day, I went to a cosmetic shop to buy the foundation again and the shop assistant asked me which skincare products I use. – Leaders AC Stop Foam Cleansing for the days I have some troubles on my skin. – The Face Shop’, Innisfree, Etude House mask pack series. I love Laneige’s skincare products, especially the Water Bank line. Innisfree recently launched a new line of skincare products: The Balhyo line. And Laneige’s eyeshadow are always amazing, and top of the list. This is a kind of history of Korean Skincare Trends and the hit items: As of now, I can see that the Syn-ake products are not so popular and the honey line is not that special, so it’s declining. For the other trends, I still see people using and buying them. For the moment, I have no other project than improving the shop and offering better services and experiences to my customers. I still have so many brands to put into the shop (and that’s so much work and especially time consuming ^.^) . I now order from this shop regularly, and the service has been great. All products are fresh from the manufacturer, and there are plenty of samples included.

Choosing makeup when you have acne can be confusing, even worrisome—how can you know what’s “safe” for breakout-prone skin? So, as I mentioned in my previous Korean beauty posts, most of the products initially listed in my routine were great but not great enough for trouble/acne-prone skin. The rest in the photo below were freebies and samples, one of the advantages of buying products from w2beauty . The products include: ….and different samples of products from Benton, Sulawhasoo, Su:m, The Faceshop and Mizon. While i like w2beauty because of the reward system, sheet masks and samples, you can get these products at lesser prices on Amazon and Ebay but without guarantee of free sheet masks and samples.
In terms of beauty, we were diametrically opposed: Where I existed in the easy, low-maintenance, zero-to-one-step French skin-care camp, my roommate followed a strict, traditional Korean regimen of as many as ten serums, lotions, patches, and creams. Our respective shelves in the bathroom cabinet looked like two different planets—it was the first time I had ever looked at a shelf of beauty products and thought to myself, “What is all of this stuff?” The more I use the accessibly priced and adorably packaged K-beauty products, I realize that if skin care is considered a luxury in America, in Korea it’s a right, and they make it fun, which is why everyone is doing it. I’ve built an arsenal of facial mists, oils (both for cleansing and for moisturizing), face masks, sponges, serums, lotions, and masks for day, night, and a longer, more nourishing routine on the weekends. The trick, for me, has been figuring out which ingredients work best for my skin, and then finding the best products that contain those ingredients. One of the best parts about the surge in the popularity of Korean beauty is that now these products are so accessible: If you don’t want to place orders from stores halfway around the world and wait weeks for things to arrive, it’s as easy as getting on the New York City subway. If you’re going to embark on your own Korean beauty shopping excursion, and I recommend that you do, I can tell you that the best part about these stores are the people who work in them: expert women who will speak to you openly and enthusiastically about their skin-care routines.

Here are the steps for a typical Korean skin care routine: Most people think toners are useless/overkill/drying to the skin, but if you pick the right toner for your skin type, it will be well worth your money. While many Western toners are designed to simply balance your skin's p H levels, many Asian toners aim to do that AND hydrate the skin with nutrients. I like to think that this is THE product to use when you're unhappy or unsatisfied with your skin in someway. Okay, so emulsion may not be for everyone, so depending on the season and/or your skin type, you may or may not need to use am emulsion. If you have oily skin, you may not need to use emulsions in your daily skin care routine. That way, your skin can heal while you sleep (which is, by the way, super important to your skincare routine!), and you wake up with beautiful, radiant skin :) You would use the exfoliator or peel after your gentle cleanser and before your toner. Sheet masks are great for any skin types, and should be used depending on your skin type. Depending on the season, the condition of your skin, etc., you may want to use sheet masks 1-3 times a week.
So I want to share the top 10 Korean tips to care for oily or acne-prone skin based on my experience with customers and one of our most recent surveys in Korea. A p H of about 5.5 helps keep the skin barrier healthy and strong, keeping bacteria out and moisture in. Be the Skin Pore Toner (and the Botanical Pore Serum ) is a holy grail product for overactive oil glands. The thought is that consistently exfoliating 2-3 times a week versus aggressive exfoliation once every few weeks can be far more effective and keep skin healthier. For those with oily skin, BHAs are the ingredient to look for because they can penetrate more easily through oil. And using face oils can actually be good for the skin barrier as the oils you put on the skin and the oils released through the skin aren’t one and the same. The intensive hydration and nourishment that sheet masks can provide both help hydrate skin (see tip #1) and, depending on the active ingredient, can help with sebum production, refining texture (those with oily skin tend to complain more about leathery, thicker-looking skin), and firming up pores. My all-time favorite sheet mask is great for all skin types, and soothing for those with breakouts or irritated skin. The Steam Pack heats up upon application to clear out pores and is a good fit for oily skin (The O 2 Pack has similar results, but is better suited for dry skin). The third one—the Pore Minimizing Pack —has more of a menthol-y feel and works for dry and oily skin. Three things to look out for specifically to help with oily skin:
Many Koreans have flawless complexions–it’s no wonder, with the time and diversity of products they have available. No matter your ethnicity or skin tone, you can incorporate these products into your routine and target just about any issue imaginable. Skin Food Black Sugar Mask Wash Off – If a sheet mask isn’t your thing, try this black sugar mask with vitamins, glycolic acid and nourishing minerals. The mask’s texture will exfoliate your skin, sloughing off any oil or dead skin cells and tighten all over in just 10 minutes. Because you apply with a sponge, there is no getting carried away with too much product and the consistency won’t leave harsh lines or leave you with a cake finish. Innisfree Green Tea Mask - This mask is loaded with herbs and antioxidants to help revitalize your skin. This skin smoothing favorite can be applied multiple ways–all over, just on affected areas, alone or before moisturizer, and twice a day or only before bed. Tonymoly Kiss Kiss Lovely Lip Patch - This cute lip mask claims it will hydrate and smooth your pout with just one application. The product works without causing over-drying and irritation on every skin type.
