Are You Starting To Use Anti Aging Products Too Soon

Let’s say that you’re “technically young” (so, in your early twenties, though we could argue—to the teeth!—that the thirties are still “technically young,” but for the purpose of this exercise, let’s say your twenties) and have assembled something of a skincare regimen. (I have friends who never take painkillers for this reason, and also avoid antibiotics unless under severe duress.) I wondered if the same applied to skincare. Their answers and advice varied, with the exception of the following tip: wear sunscreen. Plus, they can be way too harsh on the skin, even if you don’t feel the redness. We did research on [chemical] peels, too, and, like I said, the worst thing to do is thin out the skin. But there’s two types of aging of the skin: intrinsic aging, which would happen if you lived in a vacuum or a bubble, and then there’s extrinsic, which is sun-exposure and smoking, which accelerate your skin’s break-down. I’m a believer in prevention, even in your twenties, so that you can age gracefully and naturally, versus trying to reverse the signs of UV exposure or smoking later on. But it can also be incredibly sensitizing, making your skin very dry and sensitive to the sun. Keep it to the basics: sunscreen every day, and sunglasses, too. “I’ve been in practice for 11 years and it’s the first time in 11 years that I’ve called the company to tell them how impressed I am with a product. Does that mean we can grab the nearest baby and slather them in Olay? “Vitamin-A derivatives [like retinol and the widely prescribed Retin-A] are strong molecules that focus on short-term results, overstimulating the skin without considering the long-term consequences. If you take the sum total of what was said, it's not that it's too early to think about aging—and I acknowledge this was a long piece, and you probably feel like you've aged a bit since you started it; I hope your brow remained un-furrowed throughout, and there was little-to-no squinting—it's just about thinking clearly, and making smart choices. So rethink all of those harsh anti-agers with immediate effects and long-term issues that you've squirreled away, my friends, and pick up some of the new science (and some SPF!). more...

In many ways, Aquaphor ($14.99, walgreens.com ) is the ideal product: It's very inexpensive, and it works really well. Retinol Night Cream or Serum "Retinol is a proven ingredient to reverse sun damage and improve the appearance of fine lines. It is very important to use retinol only at night, because it increases sun sensitivity, and you should never apply a retinol to damp skin, because it will cause irritation. Remember, sun rays coming through a window can also damage the skin. The ingredients to look for are salicylic acid (especially good for acne-prone skin), alpha-hydroxy acids, or glycolic acid (recommended for sensitive skin). The Return to Retinol

Imagine, too, that skeptics and researchers the world over had tested this ingredient exhaustively, scrutinizing it for decades to see if it really could be as potent as it appeared—and it was. All retinoids—the umbrella name for a class of compounds that encompasses retinol, retinoic acid, retinyl palmitate, retinol aldehyde, and a host of others—are derivatives of vitamin A, one of the body’s key nutrients. But by the 1960s, researchers were metabolizing retinol into its more stable (and more active) cousin retinoic acid and were beginning to understand its tremendous power in skin-care applications. D., a Scottsdale, Arizona, dermatologist and chief scientific officer for the clinical line PCA Skin. “Everyone was really excited from the beginning, but the big issues were dryness and irritation—mostly because people would apply too much,” says dermatologist Fredric Brandt, M. This is because the retinoic-acid molecule works a little too well: It’s so tiny it can penetrate all the layers of the skin, prompting extra-speedy cell turnover and exfoliation in the process. In an attempt to tame the wildness of retinoic acid, researchers revisited its milder parent molecule, retinol. The genius of retinol, researchers realized, is that it isn’t active when applied to skin. Your cells receive the retinol, hang on to it until they’re ready, and then convert only what they need into retinoic acid. Ro C—one of the first skin-care companies to stabilize retinol—has created the two-step Retinol Correxion Max Wrinkle Resurfacing System, which partners their classic retinol lotion with a sci-fi-ish “electrostimulation” serum that the company claims uses microcurrent technology to reenergize and brighten skin. And in 2010, the peer-reviewed British Journal of Dermatology published a clinical trial demonstrating that Olay’s Pro-X Deep Wrinkle retinol regimen could clinically improve the appearance of wrinkles just as much as prescription-strength retinoic acid. more...

The Best Retinoid Products— and Why You Should Use Them

(Between 2007 and 2010, product launches nearly doubled.) What is surprising is the active ingredient that’s touted in the vast majority of these potions: good old retinoids. D., a professor of dermatology at the University of Pennsylvania, as an acne treatment and approved by the U. (Chances are, you used it on pimples back in the day.) Kligman and his colleague James Leyden, M. D., noticed that Retin-A also improved wrinkles and skin tone in acne patients. Kligman eventually patented Renova, a tretinoin in an emollient base, which was the first FDA-approved topical treatment for wrinkles and fine lines. “There is not a single class of ingredient that can rival the track record that retinoids have for proven scientific results,” says Macrene Alexiades-Armenakas, Ph. “I tell patients that regardless of how much time or money they have, sunscreen and a retinoid are the most important anti-agers to use,” she says. By acting directly on the DNA in skin cells, “they boost the many cell functions that tend to slow down once we hit 30,” says Alexiades-Armenakas. For one thing, retinoids increase cell turnover, so the skin is continually sloughing off damaged cells and healthy skin is always what you see on top. Retinoids also thin the top layer of skin, the stratum corneum, while thickening the smoother second layer, the epidermis, which makes the skin look luminous and firm. D., a clinical associate professor of dermatology at Tulane University, in New Orleans, retinoids also boost the production of collagen (one of the skin’s primary support structures) and prevent its breakdown as they work their way into deeper skin layers. more...

Skin Care Myths and Misconceptions : Retinol vs Retin A

Many people confuse retinol with Retin A, which is a brand of tretinoin also referred to as trans-retinoic acid or simply retinoic acid. Retinol and retinoic acid are related but distinctly different. In theory, one should be able to apply retinol to the skin, wait till it gets converted to retinoic acid, and eventually get the known skin benefits of the latter. As a result, significantly less people respond to retinol creams than to retinoic acid (tretinoin, Retin A), and the degree of response tends to be less too. It is true that retinol products tend to have fewer side-effects than retinoic acid (tretinoin, Retin A). However, high concentrations of retinol can be almost as irritating to the skin as retinoic acid. more...

Retinol Myths - Facts About Retinol Cream

ALL THESE INGREDIENTS STARTING WITH R (RETINOL, RETINOIC ACID, ETC.) BASICALLY DO THE SAME THING. Prescription formulas contain retinoic acid, the magic ingredient that fights visible aging; nonprescription alternatives need to be converted into retinoic acid by the skin at the cellular level. "There's a lot of literature showing that while retinol is more gentle than retinoic acid, biochemically it does exactly the same thing—it may just take longer to see results." The same can't be said for the derivatives called pro-retinols (a.k.a. more...
