In terms of beauty, we were diametrically opposed: Where I existed in the easy, low-maintenance, zero-to-one-step French skin-care camp, my roommate followed a strict, traditional Korean regimen of as many as ten serums, lotions, patches, and creams. Our respective shelves in the bathroom cabinet looked like two different planets—it was the first time I had ever looked at a shelf of beauty products and thought to myself, “What is all of this stuff?” The more I use the accessibly priced and adorably packaged K-beauty products, I realize that if skin care is considered a luxury in America, in Korea it’s a right, and they make it fun, which is why everyone is doing it. I’ve built an arsenal of facial mists, oils (both for cleansing and for moisturizing), face masks, sponges, serums, lotions, and masks for day, night, and a longer, more nourishing routine on the weekends. The trick, for me, has been figuring out which ingredients work best for my skin, and then finding the best products that contain those ingredients. One of the best parts about the surge in the popularity of Korean beauty is that now these products are so accessible: If you don’t want to place orders from stores halfway around the world and wait weeks for things to arrive, it’s as easy as getting on the New York City subway. If you’re going to embark on your own Korean beauty shopping excursion, and I recommend that you do, I can tell you that the best part about these stores are the people who work in them: expert women who will speak to you openly and enthusiastically about their skin-care routines.

There are a ton of whitening products in the Korean and Japanese skincare markets, and many of the multi-functioning products tout whitening properties as one of the major attributes. The nice thing about this layering technique is that you are not obligated to use Asian skincare products to do it. There are a lot of online shops as well as Amazon and Ebay sellers that carry Korean & Japanese skincare products. This is a list of online stores and sellers that I know carry authentic products from Korean and Japanese skincare brands. Wishtrend – Wishtrend is one of the first online Korean Beauty retailers to pop up on the scene, and they carry a large array of products from brands that are sometimes hard to find in other places. The selection is HUGE, products are authentic, and the prices are very, very low. They have a huge selection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean skincare products. I Am Love Shop – Huge selection of Korean skincare products from most of the major brands, such as Etude House, Lioele, Missha, OST, Aritaum, Innisfree, Ciracle, and many others. Cosmetic Love on Amazon – This shop has a great variety of Korean cosmetics and skincare products, and the prices are very good. The Beauty Wolf – This is a newcomer to the beauty blogging scene covering a lot of Korean makeup and skincare products, as well as a few Western products.
Many Koreans have flawless complexions–it’s no wonder, with the time and diversity of products they have available. No matter your ethnicity or skin tone, you can incorporate these products into your routine and target just about any issue imaginable. Skin Food Black Sugar Mask Wash Off – If a sheet mask isn’t your thing, try this black sugar mask with vitamins, glycolic acid and nourishing minerals. The mask’s texture will exfoliate your skin, sloughing off any oil or dead skin cells and tighten all over in just 10 minutes. Because you apply with a sponge, there is no getting carried away with too much product and the consistency won’t leave harsh lines or leave you with a cake finish. Innisfree Green Tea Mask - This mask is loaded with herbs and antioxidants to help revitalize your skin. This skin smoothing favorite can be applied multiple ways–all over, just on affected areas, alone or before moisturizer, and twice a day or only before bed. Tonymoly Kiss Kiss Lovely Lip Patch - This cute lip mask claims it will hydrate and smooth your pout with just one application. The product works without causing over-drying and irritation on every skin type.
So, we asked Cho — who also runs the e-commerce site Soko Glam — to give us a rundown of her current favorite overseas products and a few predictions for the “next BB cream.” You heard it here first, people. They’ve dominated the skincare game for, like, centuries, but it wasn't until Koreans incepted, perfected, and popularized BB cream that cosmetics companies throughout the world have been hawk-eyeing their makeup innovations, too. Which is to say, if it’s big in Korea, you can bet that it’s going to be the next billion-dollar global product. The Liner. Nary an eye goes unlined in Korea, so our liner formulas need to pass the test of both the dreaded monsoon season and sub-zero Seoul winters. The Eyebrow Pencil. I prefer the sheer brown color and angled application of Design My Eyebrow Pencil from The Faceshop , that twists up so you never have to sharpen it. The Lip Tint. To recreate the allusion, you can dab Etude House Cherry Tint [ed note: discontinued] or, for an orange-y red, Tony Moly Cat Chu Wink [ed note: discontinued] at the center of your lips. Like all Korean lip tints, both products are adorably packaged (did you miss the cat ears on Tony's?) and smell and taste like jellybeans. The Next Big Thing. This is the next BB cream.

This one is focused on my nighttime skincare routine, using all Korean skincare products, and following the typical Korean skincare routine. It’s wintertime now, so my skincare routine is focused on getting the most amount of moisture into my skin as possible. I use one pump and massage it into my slightly damp skin. I use this one when I feel like my skin is extra dry or dull, as it’s a very moisturizing toner. If it’s around that time of the month, or I feel like my skin might be having some issues, I use the AC Care Water Essence, which I reviewed here . Before Winter really hit, I was using the AC Care Bee’s Cure Serum and the Repair Complex as my serum and emulsion, but I found that my skin didn’t feel moisturized enough (winter is rough), so I switched to the Missha Super Aqua Marine Cell Intensive Serum and Control Emulsion. I pump the serum into my hands, rub them together and gently pat it on my face. My nighttime routine is when I pile on the moisture, so that’s why I use both a cream and sometimes a sleeping pack. I use the Missha Super Aqua Ultra Water-Full Cream, which was totally an impulse buy after the sales woman tested a bit on my hand and I sort of melted. It’s perfect for people with dry skin, or for people who want a little moisture boost in the winter. I like this cream so much I actually use it in the daytime too. After applying my cream, I will sometimes opt to add just that extra layer of moisture and use my Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Deep Moisture Sleeping Pack. And I know some people may think that my skin must look like an oil spill by the time I go to bed, but nope. That’s the beauty of Korean products, they all seem to magically absorb into my skin, instead of just sitting on top of it.
Dermatologist Announces Top 50 Skin Care Products for 2014. Brandith Irwin, top dermatologist with no financial ties to cosmetic manufacturers, selects her Top 50 Skin Care Products for 2014. Among her top choices are products from Skin Ceuticals, Neo Cutis, and Elta MD. I want to help my readers see through the claims to find what is truly best for their skin. World-renowned dermatologist and author Brandith Irwin, MD recently selected her Top 50 Skin Care Products for 2014 in a new article on her informational skin care website, Skin Tour.com. “There are many skin care products on the market claiming to offer the latest, greatest ingredients for the best results, but I want to help my readers see through the claims to find what is truly best for their skin. The 2014 top skin care product list includes: Anti-aging & Wrinkle Reduction: Neo Cutis Bio Cream with PSP and Skin Ceuticals Phoretin CF Gel. Irwin provides explanations for each product selection such as scent, ingredients, and skin type so that readers can select the product most fitting to their skin care needs. Irwin does not endorse any cosmetic lines, does not sit on the board of any skin care companies, and does not have any financial ties to skin care or cosmetics manufacturers, her product recommendations come strictly from her years of experience as a cosmetic dermatologist in Seattle, WA. Skin Tour.com has quickly become a highly sought out source for cosmetic dermatology and skincare product information for women on the Internet.
There was a time when the harvesting of these birds nests from their natural caves was ecologically devastating, but the days of cave harvesting are over. I was able to find research backing the skincare benefit claims of some of the individual components of a bird’s nest, but could find no research in English that studied the bird’s nest as a whole in terms of skincare benefits. But if the skincare benefits are as real as they seem, I certainly don’t want to miss out. Bee venom has been used for years to treat arthritis, back pain, and rheumatism, but as a skincare ingredient, it’s still a newcomer. The idea is that the skin benefits from it because of a compound contained in the venom called “melitten.” Melitten contains anti-inflammatory properties that are said to be stronger than hydrocortisone. I was unable to find a completed study specifically regarding the effects of bee venom in skincare. No doubt you’ve seen American products advertising stem cell technology, but the difference is that the stem cells in American products are plant derived. The skincare benefits of using these stem cells, sometimes called called RG 2, is increased cell regeneration and sun damage reversal. There have been many studies done on the efficacy of stem cell technology in skincare, and it looks as though the claims are true. Stem cell based skincare is huge in Korea, with many experts arguing that it’s the greatest innovation in skincare to date. It has the potential to be huge here, but there is a lot of controversy over stem cell research and usage in this country. Most products featuring Syn-ake are serums, although there are some skincare lines that feature moisturizing creams and emulsions containing the compound. Like bee venom, Syn-ake is touted as a Botox alternative, but what sets it apart is that there have actually been studies done on its safety and efficacy. What I’ve learned from all this is that I apparently have no boundaries when it comes to skincare.

As skin care professionals start to look toward a brighter future, they need to find their place in the ever-changing world of skin care and beauty, which is not the exclusive, behind-the-doors-of-a-treatment-room experience that it used to be. Are one or more of these the key to your future growth and success? With the improvement of the economy in general and the spa industry specifically, those skin care professionals who have survived the Great Recession learned a few lessons along the way . What options are you offering the results-seeking clients in your spa? As the demand for organic personal care products grows, so too will the demand for legitimacy in growing practices and certification. Males now make up 47% of the overall spa-goer population, and historically that number has been much lower.” Along with spa treatments, skin care and grooming products have grown significantly for men as increasing numbers of males worldwide have incorporated grooming into their routine. In fact, new research from Mintel reveals that beauty and personal care launches specifically targeted for men have increased globally by 70% during the past six years (2007–2012). For example, according to the study, approximately 50% of African-American respondents and 36% of Asians strongly agree that they take pride in taking care of their skin. Take a look at your demographic and the area in which your spa is located. What are the predominant ethnicities, and what are their needs? Provide services and products in your spa that will appeal to the largest populations in your area, in the ways they need to be received, for enhanced future success. Instead, more and more clients have a variety of cultural influences in their genetic makeup, and this presents a new and interesting challenge for skin care professionals.

Koreans have been at the forefront of the beauty industry for centuries, but it wasn't until a little product called BB cream hit the market that cosmetics companies from around the world wanted to know everything there is to know about Korean beauty innovation. Read on for more information about Koran beauty, skincare and BB creams. A BB cream is sort of like foundation, except it's light in consistency and coverage, and, most importantly, it improves the quality of your skin. Hanskin became the first Korean beauty company to specialize exclusively in BB cream and the product quickly spread all over the country. You really need to know your skin type in order to find the BB cream that best suits your skin, but for those of you outside of Korea who are curious, these are the Top 5 best BB cream brands in my country: My favorite BB cream is Caolion Sensitive BB Cream, but before you go ahead and order a tube, it's important to address your skin type first. Caolion works best for me, but it might not be the best BB cream for you. My skin was highly sensitive after treatment, but this BB cream helped calm the irritation and was surprisingly soothing on my skin. Caolion Sensitive BB Cream doesn't provide the best coverage, but the application is very smooth. I personally love to put a bit of BB cream on the back of my hand and apply it with a beauty blender sponge. The following brands are the biggest and most influential Korean brands:
It’s prime time in Seoul, and on the TV in my hotel room a panel of women are conducting a painstaking analysis of facial cleansing wipes. And the very thorough panel on my TV has left me with only one question: Where can I buy this stuff? “Consumers get very spoiled.” Indeed, the discoveries Peach and Lily has brought to the U. A favorite is the Ten Cremor for Face Smooth Pudding, an antiaging cream that feels like custard and melts into the skin. Yoon decides to introduce the potion, and 11 other Cremorlab products, on her site immediately. Glowing, über-moisturized, babylike skin has become the hallmark of Korean beauty in the past five years, and it has not only set off an avalanche of nuanced terms for glowiness like chok chok (which essentially translates to “plump and moist”), but also sparked a boom in innovative products that go well beyond BBs. It’s located in the plastic surgery district, which is plastered with before-and-after ads and chockablock with hotel-hospital hybrids. And they’re hardly the only procedure on the Dr. The category was kick-started by the success of the Japanese brand SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence and has snowballed throughout Asia, with countless varieties now on the market. Made with maple tree sap, it boasts hydrating molecules said to be the ideal size for penetrating skin and has acne-fighting antibacterial properties.
Although I’ve tried my fair share of Korean products (and swatched/sampled an even fairer share), it’s still but a teeny fraction of everything that is out there! But more often than not, I find that most products (in this price range) perform comparably to one another. And lastly, it turns out that many of the products that did stand out to me have been discontinued! Out of the small handful of oil cleansers I’ve tried, I liked this Etude House one best: But other than that, I think there are many toners that do the job (of hydrating and softening) just fine. This is actually the 2014 upgraded version, but I reckon it’s similar to the one I tried…From what I remember, it was good to my dry skin. But other than that one, I liked this one too: At the time I had dry, rough, and oily skin, and this serum put everything in check. Anywho, this eye cream is moderately rich (but not greasy) and has done a great job of lightening my dark circles. And as it turns out, this eye cream lightens acne scars well, too!
The average Korean woman has easily more than ten products in her daily skin-care routine, and the country's philosophy of good skin dates back to the Dongui Bogam, a Korean medical text from the 1600s. Green tea: This natural wonder has long been touted for its countless health and beauty benefits, and now Korean brand Amore Pacific has perfected the science behind cultivating and extracting the most powerful benefits of EGCG, an antioxidant only found in green tea. All of the EGCG comes from green tea grown in fields on the Korean island of Jeju, which has the optimal climate for the most potent tea leaves. Ginseng: Used in traditional Eastern medicine, ginseng has many health and beauty benefits and is only found naturally in a few places in the world; Korea's ginseng is prized the most. Airless pumps: Another skin-care innovation that has taken the Korean market by storm is airless dispensing pumps. What makes this sort of packaging so special is that it keeps the product from being contaminated and oxidized.

The routine isn't cheap: He spends about 3,000 Hong Kong dollars (US$387) a month on skin care and cosmetics. Shum and a growing number of men like him are making Asia one of the fastest growing markets for men's skin care. China, including Hong Kong, is the largest market for men's skin care, at $974.8 million, an amount that's forecast to grow to $1.2 billion this year.
