The Best Scar Treatments. We found the latest strategies for treating old scars and preventing new ones. For those that don't, new procedures like laser treatments can minimize them considerably. "Treating wounds promptly and properly will go a long way in decreasing the appearance and development of scars," says Dr. The following do's and don'ts will help you keep new scars at bay-and may even erase that pesky memento of the first time you shaved your legs! Red Spots on Face and Acne Scars - Paula's Choice

OK, now that we've defined the difference between a post-breakout discoloration and an acne scar, let's talk about the solutions for each! There are skin-lightening treatments that contain hydroquinone to slow down excess melanin (which is responsible for giving color to hair, skin, and eyes) production, which reduces the appearance of sun-damaged areas of skin (i.e., brownish discolorations), but those don't work on pink to red acne marks. The one exception is for those with darker skin tones where post-acne marks are brownish in color from the skin's pigment, melanin. At-home treatments for post-acne marks, such as rubbing lemon juice or other citrus fruits on your face, don't work—they can't exfoliate skin properly and their acidic juices are potent skin irritants that can prolong the healing process. Two targeted Paula's Choice products to consider are Resist Anti-Aging Clear Skin Hydrator and the super-charged yet super-light Resist 1% Retinol Booster , which can be used on its own or mixed with your moisturizer or serum. A product like this can be layered over your other skincare and is fine to use at the same time as retinol, niacinamide, or applied over AHA or BHA exfoliants. Medical Treatments for Post-Acne Marks and Acne Scars. So, if you're desperate, have an imminent social event, and need the discolorations gone sooner than a skincare routine can accomplish, IPL treatments may be your solution (for those with darker skin tones, speak with your dermatologist about alternative options, as IPL has a risk of complications on dark complexions).[1, 2] If you have red to brown marks and indented acne scars, your dermatologist may suggest a TCA (trichloroacetic acid) peel, which can be more potent and potentially more effective than AHA or BHA peels alone.[1, 2] And don't be surprised if your dermatologist suggests more than one treatment, as some types of indented acne scars require this in order to provide you with the best possible result. With Paula’s Choice Skincare, you can get (and keep) the best skin of your life! more...

Cystic Acne and Severe Acne - Paula's Choice

Like almost every type of acne, the cystic variety is triggered by hormones. With cystic acne, for reasons unknown, the skin's oil glands become hypersensitive to excess male hormones (women have male hormones that trigger acne), and react by overproducing sebum (an oily substance produced by the body to lubricate and waterproof skin). Once that occurs, you are officially dealing with this terribly painful and unsightly type of acne. Cystic acne nodules appear as raised, red bumps that extend deep beneath the skin. Cystic acne lesions are usually felt beneath the skin before they are seen. As with all types of acne, the first place to start is with over-the-counter products and common sense skincare tips: The bad news it that for some people with cystic acne, traditional therapy using over-the-counter acne products may be of little help. Hormone Therapy: For some women constant over production of androgens (hormones that produce male traits) is the chief culprit for causing cystic acne. Summing up, cystic acne is the most difficult type of acne to treat due to the depth of the breakouts and damage to the oil gland itself. Although over-the-counter acne products can be helpful for some with cystic acne, almost everyone dealing with this type of acne will need to seek help from a dermatologist. With Paula’s Choice Skincare, you can get (and keep) the best skin of your life! Blue and red light combination LED phototherapy for acne vulgaris in patients with skin phototype IV. The efficacy and safety of amoxicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and spironolactone for treatment-resistant acne vulgaris. Efficacy of a combined oral contraceptive containing 0.030 mg ethinylestradiol/2 mg dienogest for the treatment of papulopustular acne in comparison with placebo and 0.035 mg ethinylestradiol/2 mg cyproterone acetate. Acne Scars - Acne Scar Removal - Patient's Guide

To understand how acne scars are formed it’s important to first understand the how acne forms (pathogenesis). Once the scars have formed, however, there are now several methods that can be used for improving the look and feel of acne scars. We now use non-ablative lasers, which, unlike CO 2 lasers, do not remove the top layers of the skin and are non-destructive. These lasers have a lot less risk and are more effective at treating acne scarring than the ablatives. One of the benefits of the pulsed-dye laser is that it can take the redness out of the acne scars. Since often acne scars are red, this can very quickly, within a month, improve the appearance of acne scars tremendously. Choosing the right treatment for your particular scarring depends on the types of scars present. Icepick Scars: Icepick scars are the most common type of mark left behind by acne. Icepick scars are deep, narrow scars characterized by the pits they form in your skin. These facial blemishes are often the result of persistent acne. Rolling scars are caused by bands of tissue developing between the epidermis and the skin tissue below, pulling your skin down in a scar that leaves rolls on your face. Hypertrophic / Keloid Scars: Unlike other acne scars, hypertrophic scars are raised above the surface of your skin and remain within the boundary of the original blemish. The skin may experience some bruising in and around the treatment around afterwards. The scar now removed, the skin is sutured together and heals. more...

Basic Skin Care Products in Japan - Beyond the Yamanote Line

Coming from the United States, my image of skincare was deep cleansing followed by a cream moisturizer and any spot treatments you might need (like acne or wrinkle treatments). I think face washes and cleansers are probably the most similar to what’s available in the United States (you can even buy Dove face wash if you want to!) Cream face washes are the most abundant, though cream scrubs, peeling gels and acne washes are are also easy to obtain. Keshousui is a transparent, moisturizing liquid that you apply to the face with either cotton puffs or your bare hands. There are lots of different kinds of keshousui available that can do anything from simply moisturizing your skin, to whitening and even prevent wrinkling. There are generally two basic varieties of keshousui on the market: しっとり (shittori) – moisturizing – and さっぱり (sappari) – “refreshing,” which is not as moisturizing. A couple of very basic keshousui that are good to start out with are Barrier Repair (left) or Tonyuu Infurabon (right.) They’re both widely available, inexpensive and seem to be ok for sensitive or combo skin (which I have.) Depending upon your skin type, the season, and what kind of effect you are looking for, you’ll probably want to experiment with your keshousui. I’ll admit that this is one area of skincare where I’m still not particularly familiar with the products, but essentially, after applying the keshosui, you finish with a creamy emulsion known as 乳液 (nyuueki). There are a ton of skincare products on the market, so many that it would be difficult for me to provide a remotely comprehensive guide to products in Japan. However, I hope that this little post will help people become more familiar with Japanese skin care and perhaps even guide you to a couple of good products. There are tons of collagen products saturating the Japanese market, all of which promise to give you beautiful, supple skin, but there is currently no medical data that proves collagen when ingested or applied externally has any effect at all. more...

How To Prevent and Get Rid Of Acne Scars For Good

How To Prevent And Get Rid Of Acne Scars For Good. Pimples are seriously the skin problem from hell. The discolored mark is blatant proof that you had a pimple, and it was not fun. We spoke to two New York City-based dermatologists who gave us the rundown on everything you should know about acne scars, including how to prevent them and what to do to get rid of them for good. "They are mostly cystic lesions that feel painful underneath the skin and they don't really connect with the surface easily," said Dr. Cystic pimples are inflammatory acne which involves more white blood cells rushing to the area and because there are more enzymes in that area, it leads to more destruction. Atrophic scars appear as indentations in the skin. "A true acne scar is when your body takes that healing process one step further and is not able to actually form the collagen the normal way. All the enzymes that are in the area of the acne lesion eat away at things like collagen and elastin," explained Dr. Mac Gregor believes it's important to take the time to go into a doctor's office and get prescribed the best and safest products for your skin type. Bowe suggests using an at-home product with glycolic or salicylic acid to exfoliate the skin and help bring those dark skin cells to the surface. Or you can go to a dermatologist and get a glycolic acid peel to lighten up the dark spots. Both doctors recommend the use of retinoid skin products for both kinds of acne marks. These creams brighten and heal the skin. Mac Gregor couldn't stress enough the important role sunscreen plays in reducing marks and scars. more...

Acne Treatment : 3 Best vs 3 Worst Products 2016

Here on the site you can read helpful reviews of 20 acne medications (prescription & non-prescription), 30 OTC acne treatments and 30 natural & home remedies that will help you find the product that’s right for your particular problems. Another important factor to consider when selecting an acne treatment is the type of acne you’re dealing with, and the severity of the problem. Acne can occur on the face or the body, and can range in severity from mild, infrequent blemishes to chronic, cystic break-outs, so it’s important to choose a treatment that’s formulated for your individual needs. It’s also important to keep in mind that body acne usually requires a product tailored to treat the skin of the body, not the face. Choose the best treatment for your skin type and condition: normal skin , oily skin , dry skin , sensitive skin , mild acne , severe breakout , cystic acne , rosacea , body acne (chest & back) , spots , pimples , blackheads and whiteheads . Identifying your individual skin type is an essential step in finding the product that will be most effective in treating your acne. Popular products often come in an acne treatment scrub form, which used daily can exfoliate the skin and unclog pores. Sulfur is a time-tested and reliable method of acne treatment and as such is found in a number of different skin care products and formulas. The best types of toothpaste to use for acne treatment are those that are high in triclosan and that are closer in consistency to a paste than to a gel. White vinegar is a safe and natural antiseptic, making it the obvious choice for treatment of bacteria and oil buildups on the skin. When applying yogurt to your skin, it destroys the bacteria responsible for causing acne inside the pores, and because it is naturally acidic, it draws oil out from the surface of the skin. more...
