A brand new luxury skincare brand is bucking a long-time trend in the beauty industry with a specially formulated range of products for African American women. With plant-based ingredients and proven results, the Magus Hermes range is guaranteed to banish all skincare anxieties for men and women with ethnic skin tones, giving them healthy, radiant skin without a luxury price tag. With products including cleansers, exfoliators, acne treatments, haircare and organic soaps among others, Magus Hermes is aiming to raise the standards for ethnic beauty products in an industry where the issue is often overlooked. After the founders of the company saw reports of people suffering skin burns as a result of using poor quality skin lightening creams, they began a worldwide examination of the quality of skincare products specially formulated for African American women and men. With a team of researches and dermatologists, the team at Magus Hermes set out to create a skincare brand that would buck this trend and offer a luxury solution for those with black skin. Francine Barton, Product Manager at Magus Hermes says, “Ethnic skincare has been chronically overlooked by the mainstream beauty industry – the vast majority of products formulated have been created with Caucasian skin in mind. The team here at Magus Hermes saw a real gap in the market for a high-quality, natural, plant-based range of skincare products for black women and black men – a line of products that addressed the unique issues faced by those with darker skin.” The Magus Hermes team has utilised the latest advances in biotechnology and quality control to create a collection of products that truly care for black skin. Black Hair Care : African - American Styles, Products, and More

Expert Q&A: African-American Hair Care. That can mean cutting through myths about how to care for your hair. How is African-American hair different from other textures? One common myth is that there is just one type of African-American hair, New York stylist Ellin La Var says. "Look for products that describe the texture of your hair, not the color of your skin ," La Var says. If you're worried about stripping moisture out of your hair when you wash it, La Var suggests lathering with a moisturizing shampoo designed for normal or dry hair and following with a moisturizing conditioner. When you sap moisture from your hair, it loses suppleness and is more susceptible to breakage, La Var says. more...

The Best Skin Products for Black Skin

The Best Skin Products for Black Skin. Black skin contains melanin - a natural substance that provides pigment and color to dark skin. This same substance also makes black skin more prone to discolorations and dark spots. A good skin care regimen for black skin should include use of a daily skin cleanser. Skin cleansers rid the skin of dirt, makeup and oil, leaving it clean and refreshed. A cleanser specifically formulated for black skin is best; you should refrain from using cleansers containing abrasive ingredients such as alcohol, dyes, propylene glycol, lanolin and fragrances. A black skin care regimen should include a skin toner. Skin toners give the skin a brighter, livelier appearance and should be applied to the face and neck following the cleansing process. Avoid skin toners containing harmful ingredients such as isopropyl alcohol, ethanol and alcohol. more...

Skin Care Tips for Black Men

It is first important to determine the type of skin you have in order to practice proper daily skin care. Wash – The most important step in your skin care regime is in proper washing. You shouldn’t exfoliate daily as the scrubbing action can be too harsh on your skin. Moisturize – The final step in your skin care routine, it is incredibly important to keep your face moisturized. Hydration is vital to keep the skin youthful and firm and there are moisturizers to target all sorts of needs. You shouldn’t neglect the delegate skin around the eyes, as it is the first place that fine lines will typically appear. Most importantly to remember regarding hyperpigmentation is to take care in protecting your skin from the sun. Protecting your skin from the sun will decrease your chances of getting dark spots to your skin. Use one that is gentle and hydrating, and wash in lukewarm water since hot water can also further dry the skin out. Stay on top of the hydration and you will avoid dry skin, the ashy appearance , and will keep the fine lines away retaining a youthful glow. Ingrown Hairs – Although not exclusive to African American men, you do battle greatly with ingrown hairs due to the way the hair grows from your skin. Add to that sharp edge a curl pattern to your hair growth, and you have incredible likeliness that the hair will curl back into the skin, causing the hair to grow inward. As a result of the inward growing hair, bacteria and fluid forms, causing a bump to the skin. Be sure not to mistake these bumps as a pimple and try to pick at it, because doing so will only cause dark spots to the skin. more...

It is not too harsh, but I don't think I can see the results that I saw with Obaji and Cellex. About Obagi, I too was using all those Obagi products and found them too greasy for my already oily skin although I love the retin-A formula Dr. According to my dermatologist, retin-A is the only thing that really slows the aging process of your skin and according to her, the Obagi products are over-priced. I look to the products to help me maintain my skin and slow down the signs of aging. Again, if your skin is reacting badly, go back to the dermatologist you bought them from and discuss it. I have struggled with acne since I was a teenager and Obagi is the only stuff that has ever worked for me in a consistant manner. What I want you to know is that Obagi is great but takes some commitment in the early stages, and Dr. My dermatologist didn't recommend the entire line, just that one product, so maybe you can pick and choose which products to use for whatever skin issues you're trying to address. Balancing the energy in the body that effects the skin can improve the health and look of the skin. She has a variety of options, does not penetrate the skin and she is very experienced. I have had the eye cream for 3 days and have noticed a change. It's expensive, but once you start using it and you get your skin back, you won't have to buy another jar/bottle and the oils/creams smell really good, too. I am using the ZZ line for sensitive skin, but have also used the 'Regeneration'line for aging skin, and both are excellent. Or, if you like, email me and I'd be happy to work with you on finding the right products that work with your skin. more...

Best Moisturizers for African - American Skin

But I’ve found that when it comes to finding the perfect moisturizer, skin type matters  just as much as skin color.  In no particular order, here are my picks for the best moisturizers for African-American women (and probably other women of color too):  For moisturizers, the skin care line’s Active Moist and   Oil Control Lotion  are my favorites. The daily moisturizer provides moderate sun protection and is good for all skin types.  This affordable oil-controlling moisturizer keeps the skin nourished and hydrated with a blend of sea minerals, nutrients, and Vitamin E. I was pretty happy when I found the Made from Earth Rosehip & Hibiscus Face Serum and I have continued to use it for at least two years now. The best thing about its also is that it is chemical free and organic…plus it firms the skin also! And with summer around the corner, it helps to have that sunscreen reminder. I highly recommend the vitamin masque, their mositurisers (including for the body) and skin boosters too. I’d still recommend Dermalogic because it works and so many other products I’ve tried don’t – I suspect they are for caucasian skin so are less mositurising. more...

African American Skin Care - Brown Skin

One of the most common drawbacks of frequently cutting the hair on one’s head and face closely, is pseudofolliculitis barbae (PFB), or ingrown hairs, which subsequently form dark marks and bumps—more commonly referred to among men with brown skin as “razor bumps”. The cause of pseudofolliculitis barbae is the hair emerging from the curved follicle, which grows almost parallel to the skin surface (instead of away from the skin), and then curves inward again. The inward-curving hair punctures the skin, causing an inflammatory reaction, irritation, pain and unsightly bumps. Fortunately for those men who do not have this option, there are some shaving precautions that may minimize the development of bumps and irritation associated with PFB: The cream softens the hair, making it easier to cut and less likely to curve and pierce the skin to grow inward. Although clippers do not give a close shave, they keep the hair long as a grain of rice, which is too long to curve and grow inward. However, there are several safe and effective treatments that your dermatologist can prescribe to treat the bumps and inflammation associated with PFB. A needle is inserted into the hair follicle and a current destroys the hair and follicle. Laser hair removal targets the hair follicle with a beam of light which heats and destroys the hair in the follicle. Persistent (and potentially embarrassing) bumps that are most often located on the back of the neck are called AKN. There are several reasons why they occur but the most likely is that, like PFB, the growing hair curves inward and punctures the skin. Also, it is the back of the neck where men shave more often and most closely. When hair is “faded” the desired look is for the hair on the back of the neck to be cut the closest, to be faded into the rest of the skin. These nicks and cuts in the skin most likely contribute to AKN. To avoid the condition, some men choose not to cut their hair so close to the scalp and instead where dreadlocks, twists, or higher “fros”. more...

There is a wide variety of products for the perfect skin care regimen. This is why it is important to know what those ingredients are and what it can potentially do for your skin. Of course, this depends on the type of skin that you have. Protecting your skin from the sun is extremely important for many reasons. One of the most serious reasons to protect your skin from the sun is to aid in skin cancer prevention. For this reason, it is absolutely essential that we get passed the notion that Black skin care does not require sunscreen. Some Black skin care products contain ingredients that make the skin sensitive to sun damage. Extreme sun damage can also give the skin a leathery texture that screams skin damage. By using sunscreen as a barrier between your skin and the sun, you can limit the melanin production. Experts recommend using an SPF of 15 or 30 depending on your skin and time in the sun. Again, darker skin still needs protection from sun exposure, so apply your SPF and enjoy the sun! more...

Black Skin Care

Black Skin Care. How can you treat oily skin on your face? Stick With a Simple and Safe Skin Care Routine. Pick the Best Products for Your Skin Type. Experts' favorites are nothing fancy — drugstore brands will usually do — but use products designed for your skin type. Favor products for sensitive skin, especially if your skin is dry — products with harsh ingredients such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid can wreak havoc on certain skin types. Skin cancer is less common, but can be more deadly, in those with darker skin. Mind Your Skin When You're Taking Certain Medications. A trip to the dermatologist might save your skin — and even save you money by preventing you from purchasing a panoply of products to wage the battle against the condition. Match your makeup with your skin tone for a natural look. And for acne-prone, oily skin, water-based is the way to go. In inexperienced hands, these more complex skin therapies can end up ruining your look rather than rejuvenating it. more...

Dandruff can be caused by washing hair too much and stripping it of its natural oils too much or not washing it enough, and it is also caused by not oiling/moisturizing the scalp. Skin Care for Women of Color : Basic Skin Care Tips

When it comes to skin care, skin is skin—no matter the color. Skin is the body’s largest organ which is why everyone’s skin needs the same ingredients to address dry skin, acne, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, oily skin, rosacea, sensitive skin, and so on. Everyone’s skin also needs the same basics to care for it: gentle cleansing, sun protection, and state-of-the-art products for their skin type. Always use a well formulated sunscreen during the day (the most typical cause of uneven skin tone for women of color is sun damage). Dark Skin and Sun Damage. Everyone’s skin color is created by the amount of melanin in their skin. Having lots of melanin gives women of color an added advantage when it comes to how their skin handles sun exposure and how soon the damage becomes visible. Essentially, the more melanin your skin has, the more natural defense your skin has against the sun. Just to review, skin color is not a skin type, and skin type is definitely what should dictate which products you use. How you treat oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, rosacea, acne, clogged pores, eczema, skin discolorations, wrinkles, or sun damage is the same, regardless of your skin color. Rather than get misled by slick marketing convincing you to buy products based on ethnicity, follow The Paula's Choice Research Team’s approach: Use products that suit your skin type and condition, not your skin color. You’ll find products for all skin types and a range of concerns, from acne and sensitive skin to wrinkles, pores, and sun damage. With Paula’s Choice Skincare, you can get (and keep) the best skin of your life! more...
