Skin Care for Women of Color : Basic Skin Care Tips

When it comes to skin care, skin is skin—no matter the color. Skin is the body’s largest organ which is why everyone’s skin needs the same ingredients to address dry skin, acne, wrinkles, sun damage, uneven skin tone, oily skin, rosacea, sensitive skin, and so on. Everyone’s skin also needs the same basics to care for it: gentle cleansing, sun protection, and state-of-the-art products for their skin type. Always use a well formulated sunscreen during the day (the most typical cause of uneven skin tone for women of color is sun damage). Dark Skin and Sun Damage. Everyone’s skin color is created by the amount of melanin in their skin. Having lots of melanin gives women of color an added advantage when it comes to how their skin handles sun exposure and how soon the damage becomes visible. Essentially, the more melanin your skin has, the more natural defense your skin has against the sun. Just to review, skin color is not a skin type, and skin type is definitely what should dictate which products you use. How you treat oily skin, dry skin, sensitive skin, rosacea, acne, clogged pores, eczema, skin discolorations, wrinkles, or sun damage is the same, regardless of your skin color. Rather than get misled by slick marketing convincing you to buy products based on ethnicity, follow The Paula's Choice Research Team’s approach: Use products that suit your skin type and condition, not your skin color. You’ll find products for all skin types and a range of concerns, from acne and sensitive skin to wrinkles, pores, and sun damage. With Paula’s Choice Skincare, you can get (and keep) the best skin of your life! more...

Benzoyl peroxide kills the bacteria behind your breakouts, and it has a slight peeling effect, which helps keep pores clear, too. "If you find that your skin gets oilier and breaks out only during the week before your period, substitute a salicylic acid cleanser for your usual mild one then, and use it a few days beyond the end of your cycle." Anti Aging Skin Product Testing - Good Housekeeping

We focused on those products that made anti-aging claims on their packaging and came on the market after January 2007, looking for topical treatments in all price ranges that were sold in a variety of venues, including drugstores, department stores, and beauty specialty shops. Good Housekeeping's beauty editors, Good Housekeeping Research Institute scientists, and five renowned dermatologists (our Anti-Aging Awards Advisory Board) inspected labels, debated ingredients, and sampled the latest lotions and potions before selecting the 90 most promising entries — those most likely to succeed — for our lab and consumer study. Each treatment was distributed to at least 20 women, who used the product for the amount of time recommended on labels in order to see skin improvements. Panelists were asked to stop using any other anti-aging skin-care products while they participated in the study; instead, GHRI dispensed standard moisturizers (with SPF 15 for day use) that didn't make claims beyond hydration. The chemists and biologists in our Beauty Lab assessed the condition of our volunteers' skin using state-of-the-art equipment. Volunteers filled out a standard questionnaire for each product tested, providing feedback on everything from the formula's effectiveness to its scent and ease of use. After 18 months of research we tallied the lab and consumer data and found our winners, at last! For a behind-the-scenes look at the testing, check out our video: The Good Housekeeping Research Institute scientists were the brains and brawn behind this massive undertaking. They designed the studies, recruited the volunteers, compiled the questionnaires, oversaw the lab research, wrote the reports — and picked up some terrific beauty tips along the way. Aha moment: "In analyzing the Visia images for the anti-aging serum study, I was shocked to see that the most striking results were obtained with women 60+. One 80-year-old subject will, in my opinion, make for the best 'before' and 'after' pairing ever. Each tube contains the extract of more than 1,000 organic rose petals, as well as rose-oil and rosehip extracts, which soothe sensitive or dry skin. It is all natural and 'biodynamic', which, to the purist, is superior to organic. This night-time skin repair serum has won a host of awards and is a staple for beauty editors. It is favoured for its brightening, line-smoothing, skin-plumping effect as well as its role in helping the skin repair itself from the daily onslaught of UV and pollution. 6 Things French Women Can Teach Us About Aging Gracefully

6 Things French Women Can Teach Us About Aging Gracefully. During that period, I traveled more than two dozen times to France, a place where five- or six-week vacations are the norm and many people retire comfortably at 60 or younger. I made many wonderful French friends and was more than a little awed at the way they aged so gracefully. After speaking with a few of these friends, I've come up with a list of six things the French can teach us about aging well. And if there are things the Americans can teach THEM about aging, we'd like to hear about that as well. 1) That women of all ages can be the sensual love interests - and not just the matronly grandmothers - in popular movies. Studies show that French women spend more on facial skincare products than their neighbors in Italy, Spain, Germany or the UK. Studies show that 90 percent of French women over the age of 50 remain sexually active compared with only 60 percent of American women. 5) That walking's the best exercise. French women often look askance at American women who talk about going to the gym. If you've ever dined out with French friends, you'll notice that they eat smaller portions of more dishes - instead of larger portions of fewer dishes. They eat more vegetables, drink more water and think more about the good things they want to eat rather than fret all the time about the bad stuff. more...

Whats the best skincare for a 60 year old

I'll turn 44 next month, and I feel the three products you likely need are an anti-ageing eye cream, a great serum with high retinol and/or vitamin C content, and a face cream that suits your skin type. Skin care regimen for a 60 - something year old woman

Since my teens, I loved sun-tanning & experimenting with makeup but the only care I took was washing my face with any soap that would "cut the grease" on my oily, pimple-prone skin. After gently dabbing my skin dry with a clean towel, I apply some Ro C anti-aging serum to my whole face including my eyes (by tapping the serum around them). Then I moisturize with either Olay Regenerist lotion or Aveeno tinted moisturizer, used as a foundation. I treat my eyes with Olay Regenerist eye serum or Olay Regenerist concealer. When my face is dry I again gently tap around my eyes with the Ro C serum and cover my face with Ro C night treatment. When those are dry I apply some Olay Total Effects night cream and the Regenerist eye serum. more...

As you enter into your 60s, the most important thing to remember is that your skin is now producing less oil. You will likely notice that your skin feels dryer and less taut, so you will need to do everything you can to replenish moisture. Reduce wahsing your face to once per day. Due to the lack of oil that your skin is producing on its own, you'll need to take extra precautions to retain moisture. Since washing your face actually removes moisture from the skin, cut back on the frequency with which you cleanse. Instead of washing multiple times per day, just wash your face once in the evening with an oil-based cleanser. In the morning, rather than scrubbing, simply splash your face with cold water to feel refreshed. These ingredients will give your skin an extra dose of hydration and help to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. more...

You may have the grandkids in tow, but that doesn't mean you have to look the part. Experts agree, upon entering your 60s, think pink when it comes to your makeup (blush is crucial), and don't fall into the trap of going too blonde. MAKEUP In the past, you may have relied on concealer to hide imperfections, but in your 60s foundation should be your main source of coverage. Go easy on the concealer, as too much around your eyes can "get stuck in your laugh lines and draw more attention," cautions Linter. Are expensive moisturisers worth the money

Are expensive moisturisers worth the money? So I quickly sussed by the time I was a teenager that decent moisturiser was, for me, a necessity, unless I wanted to look like Bette Davis in What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? I have worked through quite a few in my time and the fruits of my labour are as follows: not all expensive moisturisers are good (or even halfway decent), and some cheap moisturisers are pretty good, especially from the Boots No 7 range and, a little more pricily, Olay's Regenerist line. But the honest to God truth is, the best moisturisers tend to be at the more expensive end of the spectrum. However, these moisturisers are all jolly expensive. Ren isn't too bad but SK-II, in particular, demands a price that will make the blood drain out of your face so quickly you will need at least three tubs of moisturiser to re-plump up your deflated complexion. All I can say in their defence is that all of these brands make moisturisers that are so good you honestly only need the tiniest of amounts – even if you have skin like rice paper, like mine – so they last for absolute ages. My tub of Elemis moisturiser, for example – which I use every day – has lasted me a full year, which is not something I can say about the various Olay moisturisers I have used in my time. Having said all that, I am increasingly coming round to the idea that moisturiser doesn't matter quite as much as something else: serums. If you have a good serum, you do not need to spend too much on a moisturiser. Far and away the best serum in the world is Estée Lauder's Advanced Night Repair , which is expensive but seriously skin-changing. Yes, skincare can be expensive, but this is one area where I really do think quality makes a difference (unlike with makeup, say, where I remain convinced that you can largely get away with the cheap stuff). No, it's not essential and no, of course not everyone can afford to spend such silly amounts on a non-essential, but a good moisturiser will make you feel comfortable in your skin all day. more...

Dry Skin Solutions for Aging Skin. Dermatologist Sonia Badreshia-Bansal, MD, says fewer natural oils, sun damage , and decreased cell renewal can all lead to dry, rougher skin as we get older.
