The Best Morning Skin - Care Routine - Women's Health

Skin care, SPF is only half the battle. We’ve got to clean our skin and arm it with antioxidants (then UV protection) to ensure we’re really ready to face the day. To figure out how to best protect our skin from UV rays and the harmful particles suspended in the air (many of which are generated during the combustion of fossil fuels), we spoke to Debra Jaliman, M. D., a New York-based dermatologist and author of Skin Rules, about the best way to handle our morning skin-care regimens. Read on for her tips on how to tinker with the morning trifecta, no matter your skin type. Many people think, "If my skin doesn’t feel greasy, it must not be dirty." But even those with ultra-dry skin still need to cleanse in the morning, says Jaliman. “There’s oil and bacteria that’s accumulated on the skin while you’ve been sleeping all night," she says, "so it’s important to cleanse in the morning." Those with dry skin should look for a cleanser that’s creamy in consistency and stocked with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, or other gentle moisturizers, recommends Jaliman. “The cleanser you choose is crucial in terms of not drying out your skin,” she says. But for those with oily skin, morning cleansing is a particularly important step. Jaliman suggests cleansing with a powder or glycolic- or salicylic-acid-spiked cleanser (rather than a cream) and toning the skin as well. Although those with oily skin tend to shy away from “hydrating” products, the best way for this group to get hydrated skin in the day is via a serum, since a moisturizer will just up the grease factor, says Jaliman. The best way to fight fussy skin? Look for products with short ingredient lists—like Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser ($4, Drugstore.com )—and serums that calm and soothe. more...

How To Care For Dry Skin - Paula's Choice

Why Your Skin Gets Dry. The primary reason your skin becomes dry is all about impairment. For the most part, this is due to sun damage and, to some extent, the use of skin-care products that contain irritating or drying ingredients. Have you ever noticed that the parts of your body that don't have sun damage (the parts of your body that are not routinely exposed to the sun) are rarely, if ever, dry (just look at the inside part of your arm or your derriere)? What dry skin needs is barrier-repairing ingredients that help it act younger so it can sustain a healthy water balance. Here are our best tips to stop the cycle of dry, uncomfortable skin: The next steps are to give your skin what it needs to act like it did before it was damaged by the sun. Are all just "moisturizers"): Moisturizers should be filled to the brim with antioxidants, ingredients that help skin hold on to water, skin-repairing ingredients, and anti-inflammatory ingredients. Don't forget your lips: Lips are the least capable of staying smooth and soft. Will Drinking Water Prevent Dry Skin? This is one of those beauty myths that refuses to go away, but here are the facts: Although drinking eight glasses of water a day is great for your body, it doesn't work to improve or reduce dry skin. If all it took to get rid of dry skin was drinking more water, then no one would have dry skin and moisturizers would stop being sold. The causes of and treatments for dry skin are far more complicated than just drinking water. more...

The Best Skin Care Routine for Dry Skin. It attracts and retains moisture in your skin (it can hold up to 1,000 times its own weight in water) and is the same ingredient used in injectable fillers, says Emmy Graber, M. As with retinoids, many of the most common blemish-busters can dry out your skin even further, so be cautious when addressing breakouts. When it seems like no amount of face cream is working, try Mariwalla's quick trick for hydrating parched skin: Run the water in your bathroom sink as hot as it will go, then bend over the sink and cover your head with a towel so that the steam hits your skin. "The steam leaves a layer of moisture on your skin and the ointment locks it in," she explains. "Plus, steaming your skin also ensures the product won't sting when you apply it, a common complaint for many people whose skin is extremely dry and chapped." That means heavy-duty creams and balms are your best bet, especially those that contain occlusive ingredients, like dimethicone, that seal moisture into the skin, and/or hydrating glycerin, says Zeichner. By using it every day, you're preventing the build-up of dry skin." For an added dose of hydration, she suggests using the brush with a creamy, non-soap cleanser. Antioxidants are well-known in the skincare world for their preventative benefits, helping to thwart free-radical damage caused by sun and pollution, but they're also effective at improving skin tone, Zeichner points out. The latter is especially ideal for dry skin: "Vitamin E is a heavier and richer antioxidant that can also help hydrate skin," he adds. more...

How To Best Take Care Of Your Skin At Night

According to researchers at the University of California-Irvine, new skin cells grow faster while you sleep , so a good evening facial routine should be a high priority. At night, the goal is to repair damage from the day's pollution, sun and stress, as well as to hydrate since you lose more water from your skin as you snooze , according to cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Day and Julia Tzu, M. Start with a good cleansing to ensure you remove all makeup and build-up from the day. As such, she recommends using a cleansing brush like the Clarisonic or Olay Pro X along with a gentle face cleanser in lukewarm water to wash off dirt and oil. Tzu suggests using skincare products that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. They are, though, beneficial for opening pores so that active ingredients penetrate and easily absorb into the skin. Tzu instructs her patients to pat it dry and apply a small amount of retinoid all over the face. (Be sure to avoid the area around the eye, corners of your mouth and creases of the nose.) These creams work to brighten and heal the skin . "However, retinoids, especially those that are prescription strength, often dry the skin out. Put on a thick layer of moisturizer all over the face and neck. The biggest difference between daytime and nighttime moisturizers is that the former are lighter in consistency and often contain sunscreen. The consistency of nighttime moisturizers may not feel or look aesthetically pleasing to the user, but they make skin soft and supple. Day suggests reading the ingredients label for antioxidants, peptides and vitamins C and A to help repair the "insults" from the day. "[It] protects and hydrates the delicate skin of the eye," says Dr. more...

5 Skin Care Tips For Post 50 Women - The Huffington Post

Dara Kennedy, the founder of Ayla, has 5 skin care tips for post 50 women: Menopausal and pre-menopausal women typically find their skin is much more reactive than it used to be, so avoiding these types of ingredients can help significantly. Here are two simple products - good for post 50 women - that can be found pretty easily at health food stores, some drugstores and online shops: Alba Botanica and Barlean's Coconut Oil. Many products on the market are designed for younger skin, and the formulas can be very harsh and drying. It can be difficult to find products that address these issues while at the same time taking care of aging skin. 5) Wrinkles and a loss of firmness are also often experienced by menopausal and pre-menopausal women; these tend to be the result of their shifting levels of estrogen and progesterone. Retinol is often used to address these two skin concerns, but if skin is sensitive and dry, that may not be the best solution. more...

A Man's Full Skin Care Regime - Face Wash to Aftershave

If you are just starting out on the road to healthy skin, you may feel overwhelmed when faced with so many potential products you can use in your skin care regime! But your skin will definitely thank you for it in the long run! Choose an antibacterial soap or body wash for men to rid your body of the build up of harmful toxins, dirt and grime. Make sure to choose a facial scrub for men and face brush that aren’t going to be too harsh on your skin. Simply massage the scrub into your face and run the brush over your skin. Skin Care and A Routine

If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using. more...

Men’s Guide To Skin Care - Paging Dr. NerdLove

I still use the Protective Lotion occasionally when I don't have time to put on both the jojoba oil and sunscreen. If you have skin problems, going to a doctor and actually having things checked out can really help. I can have bad acne that makes my skin horribly inflamed and painful and the yogurt mask definitely helped calm it down. All that stuff in the various orange and white, or green and white, bottles, that basically has 2-3% salycilic acid in it and from my experience makes your skin feel nice to the touch but is about damn worthless for fighting acne or blemishes. In the winter (or for drier skin generally) you can just wipe it off instead of rinsing. But the benzoyl peroxide works well, especially if you put it on before you shower, and leave it on for about 5 minutes. I actually have fairly oily skin, especially on my face, so i need to try and find something for that. I have combination skin, so I only use it at night and moisturize in the morning, but if you have quite oily skin it might be good as a consistent face soap. If you need moisturiser on both the dry and oily areas of the skin it should probably be two separate products. This is a great guide for the best sunscreens and avoiding bad/toxic ingredients: http:/www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/ I use Burn Out Kids Physical Sunscreen which has been great on my skin and under makeup, but in general I'm quite limited in what I can get over in NZ and have to order Burn Out in from the US anyway. You can get a good starter kit for less than fifty bucks, possibly much less depending on the brand and what's in the kit. A cleanser that is appropriate for your skin, a spot treatment for blemishes that pop up, a scrub to exfoliate every few days, and a moisturizer (you may be able to skip out on this one if you have very oily skin). more...
