Help for Oily Skin : Oily Skin : Skincare Advice

Recognizing and Understanding Oily Skin. Oily skin is hard to control because it's the result of genetically determined hormonal changes in your body, and you simply cannot control hormones topically. The hormones responsible for oily skin are called androgens—the male hormones—and they are present in both men and women. Caring for Oily Skin. The first step in caring for oily skin is to take a critical look at your current skin-care routine. Products that make your skin tingle (such as menthol, mint, eucalyptus, and lemon) or that contain alcohol may feel like they are helping with your oily skin, but tingling is not helpful for anyone's skin. Also bad for oily skin are products that contain pore-clogging or emollient ingredients, which may make your oily skin worse. Step-by-Step Routine for Oily Skin. Hydration, and absorbing excess oil—will help you take control of your skin so you'll see less oil, smaller pores, and fewer breakouts, using products from Paula's Choice or the other products we recommend on Beautypedia. An alcohol-free toner loaded with antioxidants and cell-communicating ingredients is an important step for oily skin. Exfoliation is one of the most important skin-care steps for oily skin. The best exfoliating ingredient for oily skin is salicylic acid (BHA). Even if you have oily skin, a sunscreen is essential for preventing wrinkles and reducing red marks. Oily Skin Care Routine

It is important to choose the right products for oily, blemish prone skin. Choose a cleanser specially formulated for blemishes or oily skin, like those in the Normaderm range (my favourite is the Cleansing Gel as it makes my skin feel squeaky clean afterwards). Moisturising the skin will maintain the integrity of the barrier function of the skin and is vital for good skin health. Don’t pick or squeeze your spots as your skin will take longer to clear and you may end up with acne scars. It is a good idea to gently exfoliate once a week if you have oily skin. This will immediately remove dead skin cells from the skin surface resulting in a brighter appearance. Longer term, it will reduce the development of blackheads. Be careful not to overdo this otherwise you will end up irritating the skin and making things worse not better. more...

How to Have a Good Skin Care Regime : 12 Steps

You just need the right products for your skin type, the correct techniques and the motivation to care for your skin every single day! Your skin will thank you - promise! When you wake up in the morning, wash your face . When washing your face, use a special facial cleanser or even just water and a cloth, which will be enough to keep the loose skin, oil, and dirt to an acceptable level. If you have dry skin on your hands, put some hand cream on in the morning. During the school day, you don't need to worry about your face that much. Most cleansers will both cleanse and exfoliate your skin, which are two steps in the '5 Steps to great skin'(more on that later as well). Lightweight means that it's not heavy and oily, so it won't add to the oil on your skin or clog your pores. To use a face mask, wet your face and scoop some of the mask onto your fingertips. Water will leave your skin looking hydrated and rejuvenated! In fact, washing your face more than twice a day will dry out your skin, which will actually cause it to produce more oil to make up for the lost oil. Make sure that you're not allergic to any of the products that you will be using on your face. more...

Skin Care and A Routine

If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using. more...

How to Create the Perfect Acne Skin Care Routine

You can create an acne skin care routine with whatever brand products you choose. A good acne skin care routine is so important for blemish-prone skin. But your daily acne skin care routine doesn't need to take a lot of time - just a few minutes twice a day. Follow the guidelines below to help keep your skin feeling refreshed and clean. Make sure you're using the right cleanser for your skin. Harsh soaps won't clear your acne, but they will irritate your skin. Alcohol-free products are the best choices if your skin is irritated by acne treatments or if you have lots of open pimples. But if toners or astringents seem to over-dry or irritate your skin, don’t use them. Ditto if you're using prescription acne medications (they already dry out your skin). You aren't going to harm your skin by not using a toner . Step 3: Apply your acne treatment medications. Many acne medications over-dry the skin, leaving the skin thirsty for moisture. Now that you've got your daily skin care routine down, let's get you an effective acne treatment plan to go along with it. more...

The Essentials for Oily Skin. Keep a variety of products designed for oily skin on hand, so you have options at your fingertips for whatever you face in the mirror. And if your skin is extra, extra oily, skip the moisturizer during the day, and just use an oil-free version at night. Oily removers can aggravate the eyes and cause makeup to run down your face. The Essentials for Dry Skin. You don't need a toner, but when using one apply an extremely gentle formula (such as rosewater) with a clean cotton pad to prime your skin for moisturizer. If your skin feels taut five minutes after application, either the moisturizer formula is not rich enough, or you applied it too sparingly. If you have especially dry spots, use an AHA lotion all over your face, and a richer hydrating cream on the dry patches. Remember, you don't have to treat your whole face in the same way. Use a creamy scrub packed with AHAs - especially good for combating dehydrated skin and unevenness in skin's texture - but only if your skin does not become red and irritated after use. more...

The Best Morning Skin - Care Routine

While most of us know that, as a minimum, we should slap some SPF on our skin before heading out into the day, fewer of us are keyed into the idea that other airborne nanoparticles (like smog, cigarette smoke, soot, pollen, water droplets, and pollutants) contribute to aging skin. Skin care, SPF is only half the battle; we’ve got to clean our skin and arm it with antioxidants (then UV protection) to ensure we’re really ready to face the day. To figure out how to best protect our skin from good, old UV and the solid and liquid particles suspended in the air (many of which are generated during the combustion of fossil fuels), we spoke to Dr. Debra Jaliman , a New York-based dermatologist and author of Skin Rules , about the best way to handle our morning skin-care regimens. more...

How To Best Take Care Of Your Skin At Night

According to researchers at the University of California-Irvine, new skin cells grow faster while you sleep , so a good evening facial routine should be a high priority. At night, the goal is to repair damage from the day's pollution, sun and stress, as well as to hydrate since you lose more water from your skin as you snooze , according to cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Day and Julia Tzu, M. Start with a good cleansing to ensure you remove all makeup and build-up from the day. As such, she recommends using a cleansing brush like the Clarisonic or Olay Pro X along with a gentle face cleanser in lukewarm water to wash off dirt and oil. Tzu suggests using skincare products that are fragrance-free and hypoallergenic. They are, though, beneficial for opening pores so that active ingredients penetrate and easily absorb into the skin. Tzu instructs her patients to pat it dry and apply a small amount of retinoid all over the face. (Be sure to avoid the area around the eye, corners of your mouth and creases of the nose.) These creams work to brighten and heal the skin . "However, retinoids, especially those that are prescription strength, often dry the skin out. Put on a thick layer of moisturizer all over the face and neck. The biggest difference between daytime and nighttime moisturizers is that the former are lighter in consistency and often contain sunscreen. The consistency of nighttime moisturizers may not feel or look aesthetically pleasing to the user, but they make skin soft and supple. Day suggests reading the ingredients label for antioxidants, peptides and vitamins C and A to help repair the "insults" from the day. "[It] protects and hydrates the delicate skin of the eye," says Dr. more...

And, typically, when foam is present, that can mean that strong surfactants such as sulfates are in present in your soap. While these surfactants give you a great foaming experience and help in cleansing, they can also cause skin sensitivity and dryness if the p H of the wash is not modified. This is because the p H of these strong surfactants are 8 and above, while our skin has a p H level of 5.5, causing dryness, skin barrier breakdown and irritation, especially for sensitive skin. Well, parabens are preservative agents that help ensure that bacteria or fungus do not grow in your skin care products. In already sensitive skin, your risk of skin allergy is higher than regular skin, so avoiding common allergens like parabens are important! So, look only for skin care that is paraben-free to reduce your risk of rashes. Fragrance is essentially ubiquitous in all skin care products and is a hard thing to avoid. Now, while your average person can wear fragrance their whole life without any problems, a person with sensitive skin has a much higher risk of getting rashes. In sensitive skin, your skin is more open to developing allergies, to products and to the sun. So, using a good sunscreen is vital to protecting your skin from this harmful effect. Sensitive skin tends to be redder and more reactive to manipulation or pressure. more...

Best Skin Care Routine - Expert Tips

Jaliman also told Giselle she should quit using her hands to take off the day; she recommends investing in a Clarisonic Sonic Cleansing System with the acne brush (or the Olay Pro-X Advanced Cleansing System as a cheaper alternative). On breakout days, Giselle should make a beeline for Stridex Daily Care Acne Pads (which are both alcohol-free and loaded with oil-nixing salicylic acid). Jaliman, contains a powerhouse of  “niacinamide, vitamin B 3, and azelaic acid, making it an excellent anti-aging product that also evens out skin tone and helps with acne.” Giselle also went away with a prescription for Aczone , “an anti-inflammatory gel to decrease her bumps, which should be used every morning” and a suggestion that she up her use of sunscreens (her current Aveeno moisturizer is only SPF 15) with a product like Elta MD UV Clear SPF 46 . “She’s been using the Clarisonic with the white brush for normal skin, but should change to the delicate blue brush as it’s more gentle and better suited to her skin.” It’s a thumbs-up for the Elemis Papaya Enzyme Peel: “This is an excellent product, high in antioxidants, but Asha should up her monthly use to weekly for extra exfoliation," says Dr. And finally, before she gets her ZZZs, Asha should get serious with a retinol-packed product. "She actually inspired me to make more of an effort with my skin," admits Dr. Jaliman, "and I'm a dermatologist!" But don't think that means the jam-packed route always wins out. "It's actually more often I see patients with problem skin who have been doing too much rather than too little; for example most women simply don’t need a toner — it's only really suitable for those with oily skin — but so many people make the mistake of using it." And, the lowdown from Dr. A cleanser used morning and night — "You never need to spend more than $10, though," she says. more...

Rethinking Your Skincare Routine : Why Less Is More

All that sunbathing you thought you’d gotten away with starts to deliver results in the form of dark spots and uneven tone. The blue troughs under your eyes don’t go away with a good night’s sleep. Do that — and see the dermatologist occasionally — and we guarantee that you’ll age better than gracefully. When to use it: Morning and night. However, if you can make time to pour a glass of wine and curl up to watch TV, you can manage to scrub off the makeup, pollution, and grime that have accumulated during the day. (Despite its "oily" name, it won’t clog pores.) Note: If you can only bring yourself to cleanse your face once a day, do it in the evening, when skin is dirtiest. You’ll slough off dead cells, making the skin look smoother and enabling better penetration of your daytime products. Sunscreen not only helps prevent skin cancer, it "minimizes your skin’s exposure to free radicals in UV rays, which cause the breakdown of collagen," says Vivian Bucay, MD, a San Antonio dermatologist and melanoma survivor. To save time and money — and space in your medicine cabinet — it’s smart to opt for a formula that’s also hydrating, since most of us need a moisturizer during the day. Tip: Clinical studies show that antioxidants such as vitamins C and E help to fend off the kind of free radicals found in UV rays — and improve your sunscreen’s ability to do the same. more...

And more specifically, your skin. With the help of top skincare pros, we've created the easiest, most effective plan for your most radiant skin ever. Wash your face twice daily: once in the morning, and once at night. In the morning, you're prepping your skin to receive topical products like antioxidants, moisturizers, and sunscreens. D., founder of Refined Aesthetics, your skin will be healthier and less dry when you keep the water temperature warm rather than hot. (Use the same principle when washing your hands to avoid scaling and flaking skin.) In addition, Dr. Abouhim recommends limiting the length of your shower and patting the moisture from your skin with a soft towel instead of rubbing it. In addition to using moisturizer on your face, pay special attention to your eyes, which have the thinnest skin on your body, says Dr. Chiu, but also decrease the development of wrinkles, keep pigment even and help your skin barrier stay healthy. You can take it one step further by tailoring the mask to your skin type. You might not think  your workout has anything to do with your skin, but hitting the gym at least three times a week tightens skin and reduces stress, which in turn minimizes breakouts. You should feel your skin tingling, which is a good sign that the scrub is activating your circulation. Evaluate everything from your diet to the products you use. more...

The Best Skin Care Routine

The Best Skin Care Routine. The best skin care routine in 5 easy steps to prevent blemishes, acne, spots, pimples, wrinkles and make the complexion look fresh and glow! But a simplified skincare routine, covering everything from cleansing to anti-aging, can help banish blemishes and fine lines and make dream skin a reality. Step 1: Cleansing. Washcloths can harbor bacteria and they’re too rough for sensitive skin. Regular use will refine and minimize pores and make skin feel fresh. Step 3: Moisturizing. The Affordable Skin Care Routine - A Model Recommends

I always think that it’s worth spending a little more on a serum – read my serum post here – but I like the three I’ve picked because they are nice and hydrating and straightforward. The Vichy Aqualia is particularly lovely, and my pick of the three – that’s £16.15 here . The Aloe one is quite soothing and calming, that’s £12 here . If you want to spend more then read the other reviews here on the site – there’s a link below. My picks with SPF are from No7 (from £12.50 here ), because they always seem a good solid choice and I get on well with them, and the Avon ANEW SPF 50 that I reviewed last year . I like Toleriane Ultra (£14.85 here ) for calming down angsty, sensitive skin and then the Hydraphase for long-term hydration. I like it a lot, and it’s reduced to £19.99 at the moment here which is something of a boon! Olay’s Eye Swirl does have some nice ingredients worth writing home about, and you can read more on it here. The Omega Rich Face Oil is very lovely and costs £14 – I can never see it in stock online, but it’s well worth checking for when you’re out shopping. Just two here, for the moment. The Weleda one is nice, just very simple and plain, great if you want something very natural but without essential oils – it’s about £15 but only a tenner on Amazon . more...
