Are You Starting To Use Anti Aging Products Too Soon

Let’s say that you’re “technically young” (so, in your early twenties, though we could argue—to the teeth!—that the thirties are still “technically young,” but for the purpose of this exercise, let’s say your twenties) and have assembled something of a skincare regimen. (I have friends who never take painkillers for this reason, and also avoid antibiotics unless under severe duress.) I wondered if the same applied to skincare. Their answers and advice varied, with the exception of the following tip: wear sunscreen. Plus, they can be way too harsh on the skin, even if you don’t feel the redness. We did research on [chemical] peels, too, and, like I said, the worst thing to do is thin out the skin. But there’s two types of aging of the skin: intrinsic aging, which would happen if you lived in a vacuum or a bubble, and then there’s extrinsic, which is sun-exposure and smoking, which accelerate your skin’s break-down. I’m a believer in prevention, even in your twenties, so that you can age gracefully and naturally, versus trying to reverse the signs of UV exposure or smoking later on. But it can also be incredibly sensitizing, making your skin very dry and sensitive to the sun. Keep it to the basics: sunscreen every day, and sunglasses, too. “I’ve been in practice for 11 years and it’s the first time in 11 years that I’ve called the company to tell them how impressed I am with a product. Does that mean we can grab the nearest baby and slather them in Olay? “Vitamin-A derivatives [like retinol and the widely prescribed Retin-A] are strong molecules that focus on short-term results, overstimulating the skin without considering the long-term consequences. If you take the sum total of what was said, it's not that it's too early to think about aging—and I acknowledge this was a long piece, and you probably feel like you've aged a bit since you started it; I hope your brow remained un-furrowed throughout, and there was little-to-no squinting—it's just about thinking clearly, and making smart choices. So rethink all of those harsh anti-agers with immediate effects and long-term issues that you've squirreled away, my friends, and pick up some of the new science (and some SPF!). more...

3 Things I Wish I'd Started Doing for My Skin in My 20s

I tried to play it cool, but my mind was racing through panicked questions: "Baggy pleather with an elasticized ankle—wait, really?", and "What's that sheer mesh panel doing there?" and "Where's the bottom half of this shirt?" Plus, all the flannel got me thinking how it's weird that I've been around long enough for a fashion era I participated in (grunge) to be "back." Meanwhile, I was only even in the store to return a mini backpack I bought for my toddler daughter, and I felt all the 13-year-olds in line with me (school had just let out) totally knew it. ANYWAY—all this got me thinking about how at home my former twentysomething self once felt at Urban (I would have been all over the half shirts, so I'm thankful they did not exist), but also about how much wiser I am now about certain things. Here are the three things I'd started doing for my skin a decade ago. The world of skin care can be overwhelming and confusing, but what we know for sure is that retinoids are the most scientifically proven-effective anti-aging ingredients to date. Now I realize that I can just apply it every other night and still see noticeable improvement in the evenness and smoothness of my skin. I told myself that the SPF 15 sunscreen in my moisturizer was adequate protection, even when I was out in full sun. And I often was lax while on vacation, pretending to forget to apply sunscreen and let myself get a little old-fashioned "glow." The last time I ever did this was at age 29 during a trip to Martha's Vineyard; I noticed that instead of getting my usual nice even bronze, my face got darker and frecklier in patchy zones. It looked awful and was the most visible sign I'd ever seen of how time and the sun were changing my face/looks. Needless to say, this scared me straight and I not only triple-layer my sunscreen at the beach but also wear a hat and bring an umbrella! In my 20s, I felt like I was already going above and beyond for (occasionally) bothering to apply eye cream in addition to moisturizer. I can't believe I went so many years thinking my regular face cream was doing the trick in the eye area. What do you wish you could travel back in time and tell your younger self about skin care? more...

Bernstein points out, chemical peels are used to provide exfoliation, skin rejuvenation and general skin tone improvement – in other words, they’re the ultimate multitaskers. “In the 20s and 30s, light peels, alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, glycolic acid and other AHAs are wonderful for rejuvenating the skin, and also treating mild to moderate acne, which is key,” he said. So how frequently should you undergo chemical peels as part of your skin care routine? Bernstein, this decision has less to do with your age and more to do with the condition of your skin. The Best Skin Care Routine for Teen Years to Early 20s

No matter what your skin may be experiencing it’s important to care for it and cater to its needs – even if those needs always seem to be changing. “When you’re in the exploration stage of finding out what your skin needs, as long as you stay in the game you’re still winning,” says celebrity makeup artist and skin expert artist Sir John . Sir John’s skin tip #1: Keep your skin clean. Wash your face in the morning and at night with lukewarm, never hot water. Removing makeup and cleansing are not the same thing though – first remove your makeup, you can do this with a facial wipe, toner, micellar water or cleansing oil – and then clean your skin with a cleanser. Sir John’s skin tip #2: Keep what your skin touches clean. Cleansers and other skin care products formulated with Salicylic acid will help kill the bacteria that can cause pimples. Sir John’s skin tip #4: Balance your skin’s p H level: Your skin may be dry in some areas and oily in others. Get in the habit of applying a lightweight moisturizer after cleansing every morning and night – and try to apply it while your skin is still damp to help seal in moisture. Sir John’s skin tip #6: Don’t touch your face. One of the most important and yet under-rated skin tips: Keeping your hands off your face is an easy way to maintain picture-perfect skin. This will most likely worsen any existing concerns you have and can create new ones by potentially damaging your skin or spurring new breakouts. more...

Skin Care and A Routine

If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using. more...

Skin Care Products for Your 20s - Millennial Skin Care

Young women know and care more about their skin than ever. "Younger women now are realizing the consequences from seeing aging in older generations in their family and they now want to do everything they can to prevent line formation in the future," said Dr. Fredric Brandt, New York City and Miami-based dermatologist, and founder of the Dr. Brandt skin care line. Speaking of washing your face, there's been quite a bit written lately about the implications of not washing, such as this horrifying case study reported by the Daily Mail in which a woman decided not to wash her face for an entire month and her skin looked 10 years older at the end of said "study." Dr. The Xtend Your Youth line includes three products that range in price from $32 to $59—a face cream, an eye cream, and a cleanser called XYY Dual Fusion Water that had a group of beauty editors oohing and aahing at the launch. It's an antioxidant-loaded liquid cleanser and makeup remover that leaves skin soft and radiant. Botanical extracts in the products help to prevent cell shrinkage, which—according to the company—helps keep skin more resilient and ultimately more healthy-looking. The products have a fresh, clean smell and the Refining Moisturizer is light enough for daily use, even if you tend to the oily side. You could argue that young women can get anti-oxidant and moisturizing products from a variety of brands, which is definitely true, but it's certainly easier when it's packaged up all in one place just for you. more...
