Makeup for Acne - Prone Skin - Paula's Choice

Choosing makeup when you have acne can be confusing, even worrisome—how can you know what’s “safe” for breakout-prone skin? How can you find makeup that won’t draw attention to an uneven skin tone and cover marks from past breakouts? Instead, let’s look at what you really should avoid when shopping for makeup for acne-prone skin. What we can do is make your search easier by helping you identify the biggest culprits—namely irritating ingredients and thick, waxy products. Makeup for Acne-Prone Skin. Here are a few of our favorite foundations for acne-prone skin, each offering medium to full coverage that looks like healthy skin and (this is the important part) sheers out beautifully. How to Prevent Acne : 10 Tips for Acne - Prone Skin

10 Tips for Acne-Prone Skin. And soap has a higher p H than your skin, which can over-dry skin and cause oil production to go into overdrive—which you definitely don’t need. Scrubbing seems like the perfect way to cleanse and purify, but for most acne-prone skin, anything more than a teensy bit of exfoliation is way too much. Use fingertips to massage skin gently (a little blood flow is good, but don’t go crazy) and avoid abrasive ingredients like beads altogether. It targets acne by sloughing away dead skin cells that clog pores and lead to breakouts. Unlike benzoyl peroxide, it won’t kill bacteria, but it also won’t suck all of the moisture from your skin or cause peeling and redness. When your skin is acting up, reaching for concealer and foundation is a knee-jerk reaction. They contain ingredients like silica, titanium dioxide, and zinc oxide that sop up excess oil without clogging pores, are usually a good bet for pimple-prone skin. Try changing up your hair care routine with products that are fragrance-free and don’t contain paraben preservatives. The last thing acne-prone skin needs is added dirt and bacteria from roving hands. And fight the urge to pick or pop pimples: Squeezing skin not only causes irritation and aggravates breakouts, but it also comes with the risk of scarring. The jury is out whether there is a definitive link between dairy and acne, but many skin care experts agree that the components in milk related to testosterone hormones may stimulate oil glands, creating a breeding ground for acne. Try cutting out dairy for 2 weeks to see how your skin reacts. So, these products are an ace in the hole for acne-prone skin, right? The best bet is to look for oil-free products that don’t contain additional ingredients like artificial fragrances and preservatives, as these commonly cause skin reactions. more...

Dos and don’ts for acne - prone skin

Dos and don’ts for acne-prone skin. Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when skin pores become clogged and bacteria settles in, causing the pore to become infected. Several factors can contribute to developing acne such as oily skin, hormones, diet, skin care products and even your skin care routine. The good news is that acne is treatable and often can be controlled or even prevented with the right skin care treatment plan. The secret is finding the right combination of medicines and skin care treatments that work for you." Alcohol-free products are the best choices if your skin is irritated by acne treatments or if you have lots of open pimples. What's Your Skin Type

On the surface, categorizing your skin sounds pretty basic—you're either dry, oily, combination, or sensitive, right? "The truth is, skin type is like a fingerprint, and everyone is different," says Elena Arboleda, head aesthetician at New York City's Mario Badescu spa. The overflowing cornucopia of today's beauty solutions can be as much a curse as a blessing; product misuse can trigger reactions like redness and flaking, causing people to incorrectly label their skin as sensitive or dry. Telltale signs you're using the wrong products for your skin type include stinging and burning, endless flaking, excessive oiliness, or inflammation. "I also find that people think they're getting a better product if it's labeled for sensitive skin, which isn't the case at all," says Arboleda. If the tape is embedded with tiny pieces of flakes, your skin is dry. Sensitive/redness-prone: Sensitive skin often flushes red and burns or stings at the slightest provocation. There is usually a genetic component at play, and higher histamine levels in the body can make sensitive skin more susceptible to inflammatory conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. Of all skin types, people with sensitive skin should consider seeing a dermatologist for guidance most, says Schlessinger. Age often determines whether the acne is bacterial, hormonal, or hereditary, and depending on the severity, consistent topical care can clear skin. While dehydrated skin needs products that replenish water levels with a powerful humectant like hyaluronic acid, truly dry skin needs oil-based (albeit non–pore clogging) ingredients like olive and grapeseed oils to keep the moisture barrier intact. Opt for a light water-based hydrator like hyaluronic acid to balance out skin (all our experts stressed the importance of hydrating oily skin), and look to cucumber for refreshment that won't trigger oil production, says Arboleda. Also beware of hair products coming in contact with your face, as common ingredients like aerosolized plastic can coat skin and cause yeast overgrowth—which often appears as tiny acnelike bumps around the forehead and hairline, says Schlessinger. more...

The best products for blemish - prone and spotty skin types

I use this to take the day's makeup off, it's quite a thick gel formula that gently foams up and leaves my skin cleansed and refreshed. A lot of cleansers leave my face feeling tight and horrible but this one definitely doesn't. It's specially formulated for oily, blemish-prone skin and the beads are SO TINY it's kind of like rubbing sand on my face, but it means I can really give my face a good scrub – it's so satisfying to use. It's kind of like a toner in that it rids skin of any last bits of dirt and oil, as well as unblocking pores. I like to use it before I apply my night time skincare and, again, you can really feel it working. If you're only going to use one product to try and banish your blemish, let it be this one. I tend to try lots of different brands and products but this is the one I always go back to. Avoid overloading with products – I don't use heavy moisturisers but stick to lighter, gel-like formulas that you can't really feel on the skin. I also try not to overload my skin with loads of layers of products either and I'll only use a hardcore targeted treatment (like Clinique Anti-Blemish Solutions Clearing Gel) occasionally on mutant spots, but otherwise I think patience is the key. more...
