The 3 Stages of Hormonal Skin Care

The communication that a hormone has with organs in the body, along with other hormones, can also affect the skin of both women and men at various stages of their lives. The main hormones that affect the skin include estrogens, testosterone and thyroid hormones. Too many of the hormones cause the skin to become sweaty, featuring enlarged pores that are warm to touch and even flushed. Too little production can cause the skin to go to other end of the spectrum, and become dry, coarse and thick. Once you have your answers from the consultation, look at where the client is in her life cycle and consider the possible skin conditions that can occur due to hormonal imbalance at that time. Three easy times of life to look at for the female client are young adulthood, pregnancy and menopause. Professional treatments that can help include lasers and peels, but they are only recommended after the child is born. Pregnancy may also cause side effects to the scalp and nails, which, in turn, can affect head massage and hand/foot treatments. When aging, the skin also becomes more sensitive, so more aggressive treatments and products used during youth may need to be altered because they are too stimulating for menopausal skin. Acne Treatment : 3 Best vs 3 Worst Products 2016

Here on the site you can read helpful reviews of 20 acne medications (prescription & non-prescription), 30 OTC acne treatments and 30 natural & home remedies that will help you find the product that’s right for your particular problems. Another important factor to consider when selecting an acne treatment is the type of acne you’re dealing with, and the severity of the problem. Acne can occur on the face or the body, and can range in severity from mild, infrequent blemishes to chronic, cystic break-outs, so it’s important to choose a treatment that’s formulated for your individual needs. It’s also important to keep in mind that body acne usually requires a product tailored to treat the skin of the body, not the face. Choose the best treatment for your skin type and condition: normal skin , oily skin , dry skin , sensitive skin , mild acne , severe breakout , cystic acne , rosacea , body acne (chest & back) , spots , pimples , blackheads and whiteheads . Identifying your individual skin type is an essential step in finding the product that will be most effective in treating your acne. Popular products often come in an acne treatment scrub form, which used daily can exfoliate the skin and unclog pores. Sulfur is a time-tested and reliable method of acne treatment and as such is found in a number of different skin care products and formulas. The best types of toothpaste to use for acne treatment are those that are high in triclosan and that are closer in consistency to a paste than to a gel. White vinegar is a safe and natural antiseptic, making it the obvious choice for treatment of bacteria and oil buildups on the skin. When applying yogurt to your skin, it destroys the bacteria responsible for causing acne inside the pores, and because it is naturally acidic, it draws oil out from the surface of the skin. more...

Skincare Products for Hormonal Breakouts - Essie Button

Like clockwork I can almost guarantee when my skin is going to go insane and I thought I’d share some of my current favourite skincare products that are great for hormonal breakouts. I use this regularly throughout the month to add moisture back into my skin, but it’s particularly effective for me during my hormonal breakout hell. I slather this all over my face after cleansing, it sinks in super quickly and is great under my regular moisturiser. I was so happy when I saw this new tea tree face wash from The Body Shop because it has that beautiful tingly sensation of their regular tea tree products, but in a formula more suitable for normal/dry skin. I cannot get enough of this stuff and it’s a total hero product for me. I’ve been trying this one out for awhile now and think it’s fantastic! This belongs to the same range as the Rejuvenating Treatment, but I use it a few times a week as a toner. After cleansing and before adding the Rejuvenating Treatment Gel I sweep a bit of this over my face using a cotton pad. more...

Cystic Acne and Severe Acne - Paula's Choice

Like almost every type of acne, the cystic variety is triggered by hormones. With cystic acne, for reasons unknown, the skin's oil glands become hypersensitive to excess male hormones (women have male hormones that trigger acne), and react by overproducing sebum (an oily substance produced by the body to lubricate and waterproof skin). Once that occurs, you are officially dealing with this terribly painful and unsightly type of acne. Cystic acne nodules appear as raised, red bumps that extend deep beneath the skin. Cystic acne lesions are usually felt beneath the skin before they are seen. As with all types of acne, the first place to start is with over-the-counter products and common sense skincare tips: The bad news it that for some people with cystic acne, traditional therapy using over-the-counter acne products may be of little help. Hormone Therapy: For some women constant over production of androgens (hormones that produce male traits) is the chief culprit for causing cystic acne. Summing up, cystic acne is the most difficult type of acne to treat due to the depth of the breakouts and damage to the oil gland itself. Although over-the-counter acne products can be helpful for some with cystic acne, almost everyone dealing with this type of acne will need to seek help from a dermatologist. Get Rid of Adult Acne : Show Off Your Beautiful Skin

When dirt, excess oil, and dead skin cells mingle, they plug the openings of your pores . D., assistant clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA and author of Heal Your Skin. Although post-inflammatory pigmentation —red spots that linger for months or even years after your pimples go away—is genetic, squeezing and picking can exacerbate the problem. Exercise delivers oxygen to your skin cells, making it hard for CVhating acne bacteria to thrive. Though the same ingredients that clear up teen acne also work for the adult kind, grown-up skin is thinner and more prone to irritation—so you need a gentler, more moisturizing approach. "Using an acne wash, an acne lotion, and an anti-aging cream simultaneously may dry out the skin," says Fusco. Start slowly: Wash your face twice a day with a salicylic acid cleanser to help dissolve dirt and oil and gently exfoliate the skin (if skin is on the dry side, cut back to once a day). "It smooths lines and speeds up the shedding of dead skin cells so they don't block pores," says Zeichner. Balance your hormones with low-GI eats-think whole grains and veggies—that won't aggravate acne. "Birth control pills like Beyaz, Yaz, and Yasmin contain analog hormones that may help clear the skin," explains Shamban. (Or you can try spironolactone, a drug that may help nix breakouts and is available by prescription.) Birth control pills can also help women who overproduce male hormones, as in the case of PCOS (ask your doctor for a blood test if you have other hormone-related issues, such as an irregular cycle). It works as a last resort for severe teen acne, but it won't combat the underlying hormonal issues of adult acne, and Zeichner says it "may come with unpleasant side effects," like depression, headaches, and thinning hair. It will adhere better to the skin and won't slide off like a creamy formula can. Use a concealer brush to pat it on (your fingers are a breeding ground for bacteria, which worsens acne) and blend well. more...

My Korean Beauty Skincare Routine for Hormonal Acne

It’s ok, I’m at peace with it, and I’m just going to do my best from the outside working in. This means that my skin is thinner than that of folks from many other parts of the world and that I will end up looking like a crumpled paper bag in time if I skip sunscreen. In the course of treating my acne I need to make sure that I don’t overexfoliate my skin and that I use sunscreen every day. If my skin is feeling peely and stressed due to exfoliation in places, I’ll keep up with my routine, but only on the places that are tolerating it well. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about 30 seconds to move on to the next step. I apply the first essence with a Purederm Micro Fiber pad to keep from applying too much product and to make sure that the application is even across my face. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about one minute to move on to the next step. Two pumps cover my face and dry in about two minutes, leaving my skin not exactly sticky, but sort of thirsty for the next steps. I like to layer just about anything related to acne treatment and healing on in this step, one after the other, from lightest in thickness to heaviest. I always try to wear a moisturizer—my hope is that by the end of my routine my skin is balanced and happy, and still able to handle a light cream. My skin gets two rounds of exfoliation, once in the morning and once at night, so it’s essential that I protect all that new skin I’m exposing by applying sunscreen at the end of my morning routine. more...

Acne treatment : What’s best for you? Get rid of acne

Acne treatments. The goal of acne treatment is to reduce or clear up the spots through skin care or treatments to inhibit sebum production, limit bacterial growth, encourage shedding of skin cells and unclogging pores. The end result is acne. What are the treatments for acne? People with severe, persistent cases of acne may need the care of a dermatologist (a skin specialist). Non-prescription treatment for acne. Gentle cleansing of the face with soap and water no more than twice a day can remove the excess oils and help the "oily skin" often associated with acne. There are many cleansers and soaps advertised for treating acne. However, these are unnecessary if the acne is being properly treated and can in fact aggravate acne. It's believed that this compound works by killing the bacteria associated with acne and by preventing dead skin cells clogging pores. more...

Hormonal Acne In Women – Finding The Best Treatment

Men and women can become the victim of hormonal acne but the tendency of women to grab hormonal acne is quite higher. If women experience irregular menstrual cycle they can get hormonal acne and if the growth of hair is excessive in some cases it can also lead to acne problems. Those women who have oily skin can get hormonal acne symptoms and they can become worse with the passage of time. Those women who are suffering from the symptoms of hormonal acne will see that lesion start appearing on the jaw line and the chin normally. Chin acne hormonal symptoms are equal to the acne jawline women symptoms. Before choosing any hormonal acne treatment for women it is very important to examine why the acne is developing and how the reasons can be stopped. There are many women who do not treat acne problems during their teenage time period and this can eventually lead to worse problems during the late 20s and 30s. more...

Adult Acne : Causes and Treatments

Dairy: Several studies have shown a link between dairy products and pimples, perhaps because of the hormones that are present in these foods. Chocolate: A small study presented at the February 2011 meeting of the Academy of Dermatology found a correlation between the amount of chocolate that participants consumed (only men were studied, so as to minimize the role of hormonal influence) and the number of acne lesions they developed. Experts say stress can lead to acne by signaling the release of cortisol, a hormone that tells your body to produce more pore-clogging oil. High Testosterone or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) Health issues with a hormonal component, such as high testosterone levels or polycystic ovarian syndrome, are often-overlooked causes of acne. "PCOS affects 5 to 10% of women, and many of them suffer for years without realizing they have it," says Mitch Chasin, MD, the medical director of Reflections Center for Skin & Body in Livingston, NJ. If your acne is accompanied by excessive hair growth or irregular periods, it's worth talking to your doctor, who may do a blood test or ultrasound to determine whether or not you have PCOS. If you do, the condition—and other types of hormone imbalances—can often be treated with a medication such as an oral contraceptive or antiandrogen. Is Your Skin Hormonal

Is Your Skin Hormonal? Forget PMS, now you can blame your hormones for bad skin, too. Forget PMS-now you can blame your hormones for bad skin, too. Up until your 30th birthday, you lose about a million skin cells every 40 minutes. Sounds gross, but this desirable sloughing is actually what gives you the dewy skin that radiates youth. "For the first few decades, your epidermis renews itself every 30 days, but by the time you're 40, it takes about 45 days," says Dr. Long before menopause, the same hormonal production shifts that sap your fertility will start showing their signs on your face. But before you start stockpiling your pantry with soy and estrogen supplements (which may raise your risk of breast cancer because of their systemic effects), try treating your hormonal skin issues safely, from the outside in. Just as you may see a little thinning in your hairline or the slight shadow of a moustache, more blackheads and blemishes are a sign of aging. more...

Acne vulgaris - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Acne vulgaris (or simply acne) is a long-term skin disease that occurs when hair follicles become clogged with dead skin cells and oil from the skin . [3] [7] [8] Acne primarily affects skin with a greater number of oil glands, including the face, upper part of the chest, and back. Many treatment options are available to improve the appearance of acne, including lifestyle changes, procedures, and medications. [22] [23] The appearance of acne varies with skin color. Acne scars are the result of inflammation within the dermal layer of skin , brought on by acne, and are estimated to affect 95% of people with acne vulgaris. Atrophic acne scars are the most common type of acne scar and have lost collagen from this healing response. Hormonal activity, such as occurs during menstrual cycles and puberty , may contribute to the formation of acne. [9] [30] Acne that first develops between the ages of 21 and 25 is uncommon. Acne vulgaris is a chronic skin disease of the pilosebaceous unit and develops due to blockages in the skin's hair follicles . Topical and oral preparations of nicotinamide (the amide form of vitamin B 3 ) have been suggested as alternative medical treatments for acne. [70] Similarly, topical and oral preparations of zinc have also been proposed as effective treatments for acne; however, the evidence to support their use for this purpose is limited. [17] Acne after the age of 25 affects 54% of women and 40% of men. Acne affects 40 to 50 million people in the United States (16%) and approximately 3 to 5 million in Australia (23%). The social and economic costs of treating acne vulgaris are substantial. more...

How I Cured my Adult Female Hormonal Acne

Most of it was all stuff that I had heard before and lots of it I have talked about on the blog. Everyone’s different and this stuff is all good advice that may work like a million dollars for you. And if they are doing that, and you have acne, it means that your hormones are not doing the right things. And hormones don’t just do the wrong things just for the heck of it, they do it because of some other reason. Also, this protocol should work for those who have acne due to coming off birth control pills (and if you are still on birth control but want to be off it, consider combining this protocol with weaning off it to lessen the chance of acne afterwards). With all acne, the first line of defence is to fix up your diet if you eat a lot of processed foods, get better sleep, lower your stress, and exercise. Switch to a gentle and natural skin care routine too, A generally unhealthy lifestyle is the biggest reason that anyone’s hormones are going to be out of whack and produce acne (no matter what kind of acne you have). For some people though – especially adult, female women with this type of acne – is that the diet and lifestyle improvements manage to make a huuuuge difference, but they can’t seem to get all the way to being clear, even though they feel like they’ve done everything. Thanks in big part to Fran Kerr and Alexis Smart (the lady who posted about vitex, burdock, and milk thistle), my own experience, and a few other smatterings of info that have come on my radar lately, I’ve come to a few realizations that can really help the ladies out there struggling with the hormonal acne. This is how chronic stress can lead to acne, since without proper hormonal production, the right hormones don’t get made and it shows up on your face. I’m not taking Vitex, but I’ve mentioned in a few other posts that I’ve been taking Estroblock , 3 capsules a day ( Read here for follow up post: Estroblock Q & A , which answers many further questions about this awesome, wonderful supplement – including whether you should take the regular or Triple Strength Estroblock , and whether men and teenagers can also take it for acne). I recommend it because I know that it works, and can’t really vouch for the quality or effectiveness of other, cheaper DIM supplements. Not only that but over the last 6 or 7 months, I’ve totally stopped caring so much about being perfect with my diet and have started relaxing way more (I’d like to give a big shout out to Matt Stone for this)… I hope this post helps the other ladies out there suffering with hormonal acne. What do you think of this protocol and have you found something that has made a big difference for your hormonal acne? more...

Choosing Acne Treatments

Selecting the Right Acne Treatment for You. "Some of these makeups and gels are so occlusive that when the person stops using them, the acne goes away," Alexiades-Armenakas says. Many cases of inflammatory acne are "hormonal" in nature - that is, they occur in teenage girls and women, and are aggravated by hormonal fluctuations like those that occur during the menstrual cycle. There are now three oral contraceptives that are specifically approved by the FDA for the treatment of acne in women: Yaz, Estrostep , and Ortho Tri-Cyclen. Oral contraceptives are a very effective treatment for acne in many women, but you have to give them time to work, says Bethanee Schlosser, MD, assistant professor and director of the women’s skin health program in the department of dermatology at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine. more...
