3 Ways to Care for Combination Skin

To care for combination skin properly, you need to find products that work well on the different skin types present on your face, and that do not irritate your skin. You will need to moisturize the dry areas of your face and reduce excess oil on the oily areas of your face. For example, if you are experiencing a breakout on your forehead, and you know the skin on your forehead tends to get oily, use a spot treatment to tackle the oil just on your forehead. Use your fingertips to massage the oil on your face for 30 seconds. Keep the oil on your face for 15-30 seconds and then gently use the cloth to remove the oil. If it does not hurt or irritate your skin, you can use it on the rest of your face. Wet your skin and then gently apply the exfoliant with your fingers. Massage the mixture into your skin for 30 seconds to a minute and then rinse it off with warm water. Apply the scrub to your face for 30 seconds to a minute and then rinse it off with warm water. Apply the mask to your face for 10 minutes. Use a spot treatment for each skin type on your face. But in the end, your combination skin will thank you for paying attention to the needs of the different skin types on your face. more...

Acne and Your Skin Type - Combination, Dry, or Oily Skin

Acne and Your Skin Type. Oily skin is common, especially during the teenage years when hormones surge and ramp up oil production. Washing your face more than 2 or 3 times a day or stripping your skin with a harsh toner or rubbing alcohol may also temporarily increase oil production by drying out the skin’s surface, causing your oil glands to overcompensate and produce more oil. Just as you can have dry skin with acne, you can have oily skin that is not acne-prone. While you cannot “turn off” oil production, you can help your skin look more balanced with the help of oil-absorbing products or blotter sheets. If your skin feels tight after cleansing and you see dry patches, flaking and wrinkles, you have dry skin. It's quite possible to have dry skin and still be covered in acne. Your skin may compensate and produce more oil, but that oil is prevented from lubricating your skin’s surface by the presence of dry, dead skin cells. Many people believe they have sensitive skin, but in reality, the majority of people do not. There are two causes of sensitive skin, the environment and genetics. People with conditions like eczema and rosacea are genetically predisposed to sensitive skin. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that affects the face and sometimes the neck or chest; it’s characterized by redness or flushing of the skin. In rare cases, the skin thickens. Rosacea is not acne; it lacks the plugged pores and comedones that define acne. In some cases, the flush/blush of rosacea and papules and pustules of acne can coexist in the same person. more...

T-zone contains more oil-glands than the cheeks and tends to be oilier. The first step starts with the cleansing of the skin and one should be careful in choosing the right cleanser for combination skin. One can also use two different types of toner for the different areas; the stronger astringent for the T-zone and the milder one for the other areas. Moisturizing the combination skin is no easy task as lot depends on the nature of the moisturizer. Combination Skin : How it Works - Skin Care Advice

Typically, combination skin is when some parts of your face are dry or flaky, while the center part of your face, nose, chin, and forehead (called the T-zone) is oily. When it comes to combination skin, the causes and combinations are a little bit different for everyone. Another common cause of combination skin can be a result of the very skin-care products you are using. For example, if you are using products that contain irritating ingredients, they can stimulate oil production in the T-zone area and at the same time create more dry skin and redness on the rest of the face. Voila: You have taken your relatively normal skin and made it combination! All the products you use have to be appropriate for the different skin types you are experiencing—even if that means using different products on different parts of your face. If you have oily and dry combination skin, a gel-based or mild foaming cleanser will be perfect. If you have oily skin prone to breakouts, your foundation and pressed powder can provide the sun protection you need. What's Your Skin Type

On the surface, categorizing your skin sounds pretty basic—you're either dry, oily, combination, or sensitive, right? "The truth is, skin type is like a fingerprint, and everyone is different," says Elena Arboleda, head aesthetician at New York City's Mario Badescu spa. The overflowing cornucopia of today's beauty solutions can be as much a curse as a blessing; product misuse can trigger reactions like redness and flaking, causing people to incorrectly label their skin as sensitive or dry. Telltale signs you're using the wrong products for your skin type include stinging and burning, endless flaking, excessive oiliness, or inflammation. "I also find that people think they're getting a better product if it's labeled for sensitive skin, which isn't the case at all," says Arboleda. If the tape is embedded with tiny pieces of flakes, your skin is dry. Sensitive/redness-prone: Sensitive skin often flushes red and burns or stings at the slightest provocation. There is usually a genetic component at play, and higher histamine levels in the body can make sensitive skin more susceptible to inflammatory conditions like psoriasis, rosacea, and eczema. Of all skin types, people with sensitive skin should consider seeing a dermatologist for guidance most, says Schlessinger. Age often determines whether the acne is bacterial, hormonal, or hereditary, and depending on the severity, consistent topical care can clear skin. While dehydrated skin needs products that replenish water levels with a powerful humectant like hyaluronic acid, truly dry skin needs oil-based (albeit non–pore clogging) ingredients like olive and grapeseed oils to keep the moisture barrier intact. Opt for a light water-based hydrator like hyaluronic acid to balance out skin (all our experts stressed the importance of hydrating oily skin), and look to cucumber for refreshment that won't trigger oil production, says Arboleda. Also beware of hair products coming in contact with your face, as common ingredients like aerosolized plastic can coat skin and cause yeast overgrowth—which often appears as tiny acnelike bumps around the forehead and hairline, says Schlessinger. more...
