DIY Skincare - How To Make All - Natural Skincare Products at

Through the years, I’ve spent a lot of money trying out different products to deal with acne, blackheads, and oily skin. To start out, I researched a lot about natural skincare and learned about the oil cleansing method (where you actually use oil to cleanse your face), read about different kinds of oils, and found different resources for cosmetic compound developments. I decided that I wanted to try a combination of oil cleansing, all natural skin exfoliant, and the old fashioned method of using cold cream at night. The oil cleansing method relies on the theory that clean oil is the best way to draw out the dirt and oil that clogs pores. My next step in developing my own skincare was deciding what kinds of oil to use, I’ve read about the benefits of grape seed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), and extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO) for your skin. I kept all of this in mind while developing my skincare routine, and still decided to stick with using extra virgin coconut oil on my face, while mixing it with other products. I still wanted to use coconut oil to cleanse my face, though, so I thought the best compromise would be to combine coconut oil with other elements to clean and exfoliate my skin. The natural skincare regimen I decided on starts out with the old housewife tradition of nightly removing makeup with cold cream. (read recipe below) To remove my makeup, I use my hand to apply the cold cream all over my face (except my eyes, more on that later), and then use a clean, slightly damp washcloth to wipe it all off. On days I don’t wear makeup, I just skip to the next step up gently scrubbing my face with the exfolient I made Then I apply a very light coat of the cold cream and allow it to sit greasily on my face all night, which softens my skin, reduces the appearance of scars and fine lines, and also reduces my skin’s tendency to overproduce oil. In the morning I just dab at my face with a warm, damp washcloth and apply my makeup as usual. I moisten a cotton ball with this solution, wipe it across my eyes until all of the makeup is removed, and then begin the rest of my skincare regimen as mentioned in the above paragraph. more...

6 DIY Skin Care Recipes — the thinking closet

Here are six quick and easy skin care ideas that you can make at home: The recipe calls for a 1:1:1 ratio of three simple ingredients, and just about each ingredient can be substituted for others if you have allergies or just want to give your bars different healing properties. This soap is probably my favorite DIY beauty experiment so far, and next to the lotion bars, it is one of my most-pinned projects on Pinterest! Lye can burn your skin on contact, and the fumes involved in making soap are not child-friendly, to say the least. It’s made out of ingredients you probably have in your fridge and pantry! I think the best part about this mask, however, is that you can eat the leftovers!  {Smile.}  You can see how I made this delicious “mud” mask here . Lemon is great for the skin, while lavender is calming and soothing. Unlike the “mud” mask from before, this mask can be made in advance and stored in powder form, so it makes a great gift. You can see how I made this actually muddy mud mask here . When I made this soap for the first time, I didn’t have the foresight to recognize that if you put a soluble substance {read: Dead Sea salt} in a warm, wet liquid {read: hot, melted soap base} it will dissolve. This wouldn’t be a problem except for that there is something about Dead Sea salt {and what that is I am still not sure} that will keep soap base from solidifying when there is too high a concentration of salt in the soap. more...

Here's how to do it: Combine one tablespoon of honey with one teaspoon of baking soda in your palm. Rub them together with a few drops of water and then massage gently in circular motions on your face. Let sit for a minute then rinse thoroughly with warm water. (Check out our  10 ways to boost your beauty with baking soda  for more ideas.) Then, use it in this transformative pumpkin facial: Mix two teaspoons pumpkin puree, 1/2 teaspoon honey, and 1/2 teaspoon milk into a paste and apply it to a clean face. Let it dry for 15-20 minutes and rinse with warm water. Apply to your hair and scalp and massage it for a few minutes. The olive oil is one of the strongest emollients you can find, making sure the fatty acids from the oil and the protein in the eggs penetrate your strands for stronger, shinier hair in just 15 minutes. Brown sugar is the ultimate base for a good scrub and we could easily spout off dozens of effective combinations, but this basic recipe is all you need to polish your whole body back to its smooth self. Just combine two parts milk with one part brown sugar and a few drops of pure vanilla extract (if you have it—if not, omit) in a bowl. more...

Easy DIY Skincare Recipes That Truly Care For Skin

I don’t miss that tight feeling I used to get after washing my face or stepping out of the shower, and I’ve noticed that my skin is way less dry and itchy, too. In the shower, I use natural bar soap for armpits, feet, and around my lady business. For my face, I simply use a hot washcloth to gently steam and then scrub my face. Whip up an easy DIY skincare scrub by mixing together an exfoliant and a liquid. For my body I usually whip up an easy DIY scrub by mixing together an exfoliant and a liquid – usually some mixture of the following: For my face, I like to use something a little finer, and my go-to for years had been a mixture of baking soda and water. Same as above, add about a tablespoon of baking soda in a little bowl and add water until it forms a loose paste, then apply with the fingertips and massage in small, circular motions, avoiding the tender skin around the eyes. I used this initially, but over the years, my transition from mid-twenties skin to early-thirties skin means it now leans toward the dry side and I don’t find that I really need it. For my body, I love to use unrefined coconut oil for an after-shower full body massage, it’s a great way to keep moisture in the skin and leaves it feeling soft and smooth. Simply apply pea-sized amounts of coconut oil to the skin with your fingertips and massage it in until it’s completely absorbed. Place olive oil into a double boiler over low-medium heat and add the grated beeswax. At first it will look like a huge clumpy mess, but adding the oil slowly will allow it and the water to emulsify into a rich cream. more...

5 Internet DIYs That Can Ruin Your Skin

And you’ve got the ingredients in your pantry or medicine cabinet. So why not go for that wholesome treatment that promises to clear acne, lift dark spots, or de-puff your skin? Even the pros have fallen for this pseudo skin care fix at one point in time. More recently, DIYers online have sworn by diluting the solution to spot treat acne and smooth the skin. It’s worked to lighten our hair, so why not lemon juice to lighten dark spots on the skin? Lemon juice can not only make your skin more sensitive to the sun, but “the acid in lemon juice is actually strong enough to burn the skin, which ironically may create darkening of the brown spots,” warns Dr. THE FAUX FIX: ESSENTIAL OILS TO LIGHTEN SKIN DISCOLORATION, HEAL ACNE, AND MORE. So by extension, it stands to reason that essential oils should also erase blemishes, reduce hyper-pigmentation, and calm irritation on the skin, right? 9 DIY Skin Care Treatments That Do More Harm Than Good

Using lemon to lighten your skin. Even worse: They make the skin more sensitive to the sun , which can lead to blistering or really bad discoloration that could last for months. Mayo may be good for ham sandwiches, but it's not so great for your skin. On the other hand, it does hydrate hair, and is a legit remedy for dry ends, but on the face it is grease-o-rama, and the perfect primer for pimples. It's true that the proteins in egg whites do a good job of improving skin tone and elasticity. Spas around the world offer facial treatments with egg whites because not only are they gentle but in addition to tightening, they can increase your glow and minimize fine lines — but be careful when trying it on your own. If you accidentally ingest it while applying it to your face, it can spell trouble for your stomach. Although it is not so bad for the skin, the concern here is more practical. And while it does a great job of cleaning things out initially, you should only use just the once. It's actually toxic to skin, so if you keep applying it, your wound and the surrounding skin won't heal. (For example, sugar mixed with a little water can get you glowing skin.) But despite the sheer number of DIY recipes suggesting it online, baking soda is not one of them. To avoid reactive, rashy skin, keep this orange box in the fridge and away from your face. But its main ingredients — peroxide and baking soda (see numbers 7 and 8!) — aren't so great for your skin. Even if the ingredients seem harmless and natural, the wrong combination could scar you for life. It's okay to try and fix, lift, fade, or tackle whatever your skin woe may be at home — as long as you get your recipes from a credible source, such as a dermatologist. more...

Do's and don'ts for DIY skin care

DIY beauty from your pantry – Salt and sugar are effective exfoliants and often the base of home scrub recipes. DIY beauty from your pantry – Tea can deliver antioxidants and caffeine to the skin better than, say, crushed blueberries. DIY beauty from your pantry – Spices can irritate and dye skin, but they have some healthful properties when they're ingested with food. Honey, olive oil and tea are great pantry products for your skin, dermatologist Doris Day says. Aloe, like honey, is great for treating wounds, Day said, and other skin irritations. "But it can sting when you first put it on the skin, so you have to be a little patient that way," she said. They are gentle on the skin, she said, and good for treating irritation. "You can put blueberries on your face, but that will just stain your skin and probably you won't get enough of the blueberry's antioxidant effect to make a difference," she said. Milk can actually spoil on your skin, and it's not strong enough to deliver any lactic acid, she said. But your skin can benefit from spices in your food, she said. "But it will stain your skin orange and you won't get enough absorption from using it on your skin to get the benefit," she said. So if you do that, and go out in the sun, you can actually blister," Day said. more...
