They even take it a step further and globally source these ingredients via some wonderful fair trade-type agreement that helps build up the economies and welfare of developing villages and the people who live work there. Aveda was one of the biggest ones I had issue with. They stem from an Ayurvedic tradition, which I love, their products smell amazing and feel great, and then I found parabens and other ingredients that are known to be dangerous on their labels. I was shopping with my mom last night and saw an Aveda store in the mall. They have a really pretty little glossary of the natural ingredients they use (guess they couldn’t find pretty little pictures of the chemical ingredients), and lots of happy anecdotes about their Fair Trade program, but no lists that show all of the ingredients that are in all of the products. So I decided that since the store was right there, and it had been awhile since I’d checked them out I would go in and investigate. I picked up a few products and did not see any parabens or other particularly harmful ingredients. I did see phenoxyethanol , which is another preservative that is not the best option, but is still far better than parabens or formaldehyde-releasing agents. This is a good sign…” I picked up bottle after bottle, jar after jar and still did not see any parabens. I politely thanked her, said I was very glad to hear that, grabbed my mother and left (but not without a sample of their delicious herbal tea). I am very glad they have come around and I am hopeful that some of their competitors will follow suit. July 21, 2013–Edited to add–As per the comments below, I’m receiving feedback that some Aveda products do, in fact, still contain parabens and other harmful ingredients. Update 2014: This frustration with the lack of proper natural skincare products lead me to start teaching aestheticians and other students how to create their own customised skincare products for their clients in my skincare class. Learn to make boutique skincare products that feel and work just as well–if not BETTER–than the generic products on store shelves.

Aveda, part of the Estee Lauder Companies since 1997, offers natural-themed products that have evolved from a simple premise: what you put on your body should be as healthy and natural as what you put into it. In fact, many of the essential oils used in Aveda products have a documented history of unpleasant side effects, including allergies, phototoxic reactions, and dermatitis. Aveda would truly like you to believe that it is in fact the flower and plant essences in its products that are doing the "work." If that were true, why bother using so many of the industry-standard ingredients seen in products from other cosmetics companies? Many of the highlighted plant ingredients merely contribute to the fragrance of the products. It has also been well established that once many of these plants and oils are purified and processed for use in cosmetics, they retain very little of their original benefit—though that doesn't mean they are worthless ingredients for skin. Furthermore, the manner in which Aveda discusses many of their plant ingredients on their Web site speaks more to historic and folkloric use rather than to published research that establishes a genuine benefit. It may seem intriguing to consumers that some plants have been "used for centuries to cleanse the skin and hair," but lots of things used a long time ago would be a problem today, including lead in cosmetics, not using sunscreen, absence of barrier repair substances and cell-communicating ingredients, and on and on. The company has many programs in place that support its mission statement of caring for the world we live in and giving back to society. What needs to happen to complement the philanthropy is a focus on weeding out the troublesome plant ingredients (perhaps saving them for use in their scented candles instead), and creating products built around plants whose benefits for skin are unquestionable because they are supported by substantiated research rather than referring to cultural traditions. They aren't as much of a beauty bargain as they were, but the improvements justify the expense and they still cost less than many department-store brushes. Yes, most of the products contain plenty of plant extracts, emollients, and waxes. However, they're working in concert with many of the unnatural ingredients that are required to create modern textures and silky applications. The new Beautypedia Team proudly and unequivocally maintains the commitment to help you find the best products possible for your skin.
When it comes to shopping for skin care, take the price point and the brand out of the decision making process and head straight to the ingredient list. Skin care ingredients are listed in order of percentage in product unless the ingredient is 2% or less. In both products, the first two ingredients are water and glycerin. Glycerin is naturally found in the skin and is a moisture booster. The thickeners, emulsifiers, and emollients are there to make the product work better and appeal to you. Lancome: The ingredients to take note of in this product are: Boosts skin immune function and assists in restoring volume to deficient zones in the skin. As we age, our hormone levels drop and our skin, the biggest organ, shows the results. Ro C: The key ingredients in this product are: Could you pocket the $80 and go with Ro C and see results? The only thing that counts is ingredients. Slowly the ingredients you do know will grow and grow and you will be able to rely on your own knowledge.
She is a big fan of the products, and Aveda's founder, Horst Rechelbacher. "Now, 90 percent of all the essential oils we use in our company are certified organic, and 89 percent of raw herbal ingredients as well are certified organic," Dawson says. “A company like Aveda, with the backing of billion-dollar Estee Lauder, really ought to be at the front of the line innovating the safest products on the market.” With a child on the way, she and her husband are especially vigilant about the products they use. When they found a Web site that showed some of the potentially toxic ingredients in Aveda's and other companies' products, they were concerned. A number of Aveda products have a low ranking of 2, but others go up to 7 on the scale. Stacy Malkan with the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics says those higher toxicity rankings on Aveda products derive from ingredients the Skin Deep Web site says can irritate the skin, harm the reproductive system, or disrupt hormones. "A company like Aveda, with the backing of billion-dollar Estee Lauder, really ought to be at the front of the line innovating the safest products on the market," says Malkan. And Aveda says the database sometimes draws on formulas no longer in use. "So we have about 350 products that are out there now that are preserved without parabens, and we have a very active plan in place to replace the remainder," Dawson says. Stylist Manuel Villarreal trained at Aveda and has been using the company's products for more than a decade.
With that said, it is still unknown how the efficacy of a 2% ascorbyl glucoside formulation compares to a 15% ascorbic acid solution. What is known is that ascorbyl glucoside does have antioxidant activity, as a 2006 study in The Journal of the Chinese Chemical Society verifies its significant antioxidant activity using flow injection analysis on a copper-enriched printed circuit board, and a very recent 2009 study in Skin Research and Technology demonstrates that 2% ascorbyl glucoside and 3.5% niacinamide in combination has significant lightening effect on the skin, which is enhanced further with physician-administered ultrasound treatments (to increase absorption of the ingredients in the skin). Glucosamine in combination with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants may also be somewhat helpful in reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. According to a 2001 study in the Journal of Dermatological Treatment , glucosamine and antioxidant oral supplements reduced the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles by a statistically significant 35% amongst 53 women when taken daily. It was, however, also noted in the study that the oral supplement did not increase skin’s hydration, and only decreased the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. One final word about glucosamine: in a 2002 study published in the journal Dermatology amongst 50 women of Asian descent with solar lentigines, it was found that a stabilized soy extract was better at lightening the spots than either a combination of 5% ascorbyl glucosamine , 1% kojic acid and hydroxyacid esters or a 20% azelaic acid formulation. Fucoidan also increases the rates in which matrix metalloproteinases associate with their inhibitors …and yes, if you are thinking that this sounds like Patricia Wexler’s skin care line, which attempts to preserve collagen by preventing collagen breakdown with matrix metalloproteinase inhibitors, you would be correct! Unfortunately, these findings are limited to cell culture and have not been applied to any clinical studies as of yet (as least not any that I have been able to find!) With that said, brown algae (and fucoidan extract) may be a promising ingredient in the future, depending on what future research studies demonstrate. Salicyclic Acid to Improve the Absorption of Other Ingredients. Brannon, a family-practice physician with a specialty in Dermatology, this means that beta hydroxy acid is able to penetrate into the pores better than many other ingredients. According to Derm Net NZ , salicylic acid works by penetrating into the skin and softening keratin, a protein that forms part of the skin structure. This helps to loosen dry scaly skin, increasing cell turnover and effectively renewing the skin. In conjunction with ascorbyl palmitate , glucosamine, and brown algae, salicyclic acid may help the other ingredients penetrate the skin better , increasing their efficacy.

There is the Enbrightenment Starter Set (for smoother, brighter skin), Outer Peace Acne Relief Kit (for reducing blemishes), and various other kits, but I went for the Tourmaline Charged Starter Set for increased radiance. I'll describe the products below in the order that I would apply to my face. First is the Tourmaline Charged Radiance Masque. God knows I have more than enough face masks (see here , here , and here ), but I use this with the rest of the products in the kit for maximized results. While I like to think the signs of a face mask working is the tightening effect it has on your face, this Aveda mask is good for sensitive skin because it purifies WHILE moisturizing. After I wash off the Tourmaline Radiance Masque, I wash my face with the Tourmaline Charged Exfoliating Cleanser. It leaves my face feeling extremely clean (thank goodness because then it would be a total fail as a face cleanser) but I also like the dual exfoliating duty it takes on. I wanted to keep the good feelings rolling with the Tourmaline Charged Radiance Fluid. Unfortunately, this serum-like product was probably the most disappointing of all four products. I've had a bit of breakout with this so I'm going to take it out of the 4-step routine for now, and maybe use it in humid seasons. Tied with the cleanser as my favorite products of the four, and also the product I will definitely purchase as a full-sized version, is the Tourmaline Charged Hydrating Creme.

Here are five commonly listed active ingredients, and the scientific evidence about whether they may play a role in decreasing signs of aging. The body produces less collagen and elastin, substances that enables the skin to maintain its smooth, plump and youthful appearance. Peptides are small proteins that help stimulate new cells to grow and help skin cells to heal. "If they work, they do so by stimulating the replacement of collagen, elastin, and other components that suffer during aging," Percec said. "The concern is that peptides are large molecules, and depending on their formulation and the skin surface, they may not be able to penetrate deeply enough to achieve their effect." Touted as a tried-and-true method for decreasing signs of aging, retinol, a natural form of vitamin A, works by reducing the appearance of wrinkles and boosts the thickness and elasticity of the skin. "There is ample evidence that shows retinol improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles," Hale said. "While weaker formulations have benefits," Percec said, "there are newer formulations of prescription strength that are more tolerable and effective." Antioxidants are commonly claimed to help fight cell damage from free radicals, which are molecules that could injure cells and increase inflammation, and increase the risk of cancer. As for their health benefits, "there are antioxidants that are effective, however, it's the formulation of the antioxidants that is critical," Percec said. " Vitamins C and E are the most commonly used, and the most time-tested," Percec said.
I've been using the Aveda hair care line for more than ten years and find that it is the best for me in comparison to countless others that i've tried in between.the skincare line though is a mystery. The first time i tried it, (botanical kinetics line - cleanser, toner, hydrating lotion) i absolutely loved it and saw that it made a difference in my overall skin tone and quality. I tried it again after six months or so and the results that time were fabulous! No more combination skin and a "glow" to boot. By the end, my skin had turned very dry, dehydrated, broken out and extremely sensitive. I tried all their treatment products, and the all sensitive line. When i replenished my supply, i couldn't tolerate any of the products anymore - burned my skin, broke me out and left my skin feeling and looking dry. I've tried it three times now with six months or more in between each try and i've not had that same result as the first. And my skin has remained sensitive.
