Sunscreen not only helps prevent skin cancer, it "minimizes your skin’s exposure to free radicals in UV rays, which cause the breakdown of collagen," says Vivian Bucay, MD, a San Antonio dermatologist and melanoma survivor. To save time and money — and space in your medicine cabinet — it’s smart to opt for a formula that’s also hydrating, since most of us need a moisturizer during the day. Tip: Clinical studies show that antioxidants such as vitamins C and E help to fend off the kind of free radicals found in UV rays — and improve your sunscreen’s ability to do the same. more...

Crucial Beauty Advice You Need to Follow After 30

Home > Skin Care > Crucial Beauty Advice You Need to Follow After 30. You may have always heard it’s important to clean your face in the morning and to never go to bed with makeup on, but it’s even more important in your 30s when cell turnover slows down. As we age, this period gets longer, allowing the dead skin cells to clog your pores and make your skin appear dull. You don’t need to waste your money on cleansers that claim all kinds of fancy active ingredients. No matter your skin type, you must moisturize your skin . Help your skin produce collagen. Collagen plays a key role in firming to our skin but, after age 25, the amount of collagen produced by our bodies drops more and more each year. Don’t turn to products that claim to contain collagen (the collagen molecule is too large to be absorbed and used by our skin). The trick is to use ingredients that can get your skin to increase the production of collagen, such as L-ascorbic acid (i.e., the purest form of vitamin C). Your eyes don’t show the signs of aging yet, but that doesn’t mean you can skip taking care of them. Stay focused on the key ingredients you need to protect your youthful appearance and to prevent future damage like Argireline (an acetyl hexapeptide that features a mechanism that rivals Botox injections) and hyaluronic acid to properly hydrate the skin around your eyes. more...

Men’s Guide To Skin Care - Paging Dr. NerdLove

I still use the Protective Lotion occasionally when I don't have time to put on both the jojoba oil and sunscreen. If you have skin problems, going to a doctor and actually having things checked out can really help. I can have bad acne that makes my skin horribly inflamed and painful and the yogurt mask definitely helped calm it down. All that stuff in the various orange and white, or green and white, bottles, that basically has 2-3% salycilic acid in it and from my experience makes your skin feel nice to the touch but is about damn worthless for fighting acne or blemishes. In the winter (or for drier skin generally) you can just wipe it off instead of rinsing. But the benzoyl peroxide works well, especially if you put it on before you shower, and leave it on for about 5 minutes. I actually have fairly oily skin, especially on my face, so i need to try and find something for that. I have combination skin, so I only use it at night and moisturize in the morning, but if you have quite oily skin it might be good as a consistent face soap. Toner is bullshit for people with ordinary skin, but for the ordinary acne and flaky skin prone, a cleanser, lotion or sunscreen with salicylic acid or some other alpha hydroxy acid will help. Many of them are astringent and dry out or irritate the skin. Moisturiser: If you have combination skin, the oily areas don't need moisturiser. If you need moisturiser on both the dry and oily areas of the skin it should probably be two separate products. This is a great guide for the best sunscreens and avoiding bad/toxic ingredients: http:/www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/ I use Burn Out Kids Physical Sunscreen which has been great on my skin and under makeup, but in general I'm quite limited in what I can get over in NZ and have to order Burn Out in from the US anyway. You can get a good starter kit for less than fifty bucks, possibly much less depending on the brand and what's in the kit. A cleanser that is appropriate for your skin, a spot treatment for blemishes that pop up, a scrub to exfoliate every few days, and a moisturizer (you may be able to skip out on this one if you have very oily skin). more...

The Best Skin Care Routine for Your 30s

The Best Skin Care Routine for Your 30s. It’s not all in your head: Skin really does get duller around your thirtieth, when skin cells get as sluggish as you are after a night of tequila shots. “Dead cells sit around longer and rob skin of luminosity,” says Howard Sobel, a dermatologist in New York City. “Glycolic acid is one of the most effective exfoliators because it penetrates more deeply than other acids,” says Fredric Brandt, a dermatologist in New York City and Miami. Rub a drop or two between your fingertips and gently press them over clean skin in the morning, starting with your cheeks, where women typically want to look most radiant. Before you can see sun spots —often caused by beach vacations and long runs (or extended happy hours) outside—they’ve already formed under your skin. Each morning, put on a serum with skin brighteners, like soy (we like  Aveeno Positively Radiant Daily Moisturizer SPF 30 ) or  vitamin C (try Skin Ceuticals C E Ferulic Combination Antioxidant Treatment )—and start now. The sun causes 90 percent of wrinkles, and preventing them (by wearing sunscreen, duh) is easier than smoothing lines later on. And don’t forget the rest of your body, beginning with the thin skin on your chest and hands, which shows signs of aging sooner than other body parts. We like Sun Bum Moisturizing Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 and Supergoop SPF 40 Forever Young Hand Cream, which belongs on your bathroom counter so you remember to use it after washing your hands. more...
