DIY Skincare - How To Make All - Natural Skincare Products at

Through the years, I’ve spent a lot of money trying out different products to deal with acne, blackheads, and oily skin. To start out, I researched a lot about natural skincare and learned about the oil cleansing method (where you actually use oil to cleanse your face), read about different kinds of oils, and found different resources for cosmetic compound developments. I decided that I wanted to try a combination of oil cleansing, all natural skin exfoliant, and the old fashioned method of using cold cream at night. The oil cleansing method relies on the theory that clean oil is the best way to draw out the dirt and oil that clogs pores. My next step in developing my own skincare was deciding what kinds of oil to use, I’ve read about the benefits of grape seed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), and extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO) for your skin. I kept all of this in mind while developing my skincare routine, and still decided to stick with using extra virgin coconut oil on my face, while mixing it with other products. I still wanted to use coconut oil to cleanse my face, though, so I thought the best compromise would be to combine coconut oil with other elements to clean and exfoliate my skin. The natural skincare regimen I decided on starts out with the old housewife tradition of nightly removing makeup with cold cream. (read recipe below) To remove my makeup, I use my hand to apply the cold cream all over my face (except my eyes, more on that later), and then use a clean, slightly damp washcloth to wipe it all off. On days I don’t wear makeup, I just skip to the next step up gently scrubbing my face with the exfolient I made Then I apply a very light coat of the cold cream and allow it to sit greasily on my face all night, which softens my skin, reduces the appearance of scars and fine lines, and also reduces my skin’s tendency to overproduce oil. In the morning I just dab at my face with a warm, damp washcloth and apply my makeup as usual. I moisten a cotton ball with this solution, wipe it across my eyes until all of the makeup is removed, and then begin the rest of my skincare regimen as mentioned in the above paragraph. more...

For those sensitive to coconut, grass fed organic beef tallow can also be used and it is great for the skin, though you will need to add essential oils to cover the mild scent. I use shea butter in my lotion, lotion bars, deodorant, face cream, baby lotion, diaper cream and many other recipes! Cocoa butter is another “butter” and a great addition to natural beauty recipes. It can be used interchangeably with Shea Butter, though I find that my favorite recipes include Shea butter, Cocoa Butter , and Coconut Oil. Recipes like smoother lotions, baby oil, salves, and after-shave balms often need to be thinner than coconut oil and the butters will allow. Apricot Kernel has the most gentle scent and almond oil is also relatively unscented. I keep Arrowroot on hand for thickening sauces when cooking and it also gets added to a lot of natural recipes like deodorant, baby powder, diaper cream, dry shampoo, etc. Not technically needed, but essential oils give great natural scents to DIY beauty recipes and can also be very mood lifting. I would never have imagined that at 36 years of age women of different ages and ethnicities would stop me to ask what I use on my skin. You see, most of my life I didn’t have the skin I have today. On top of that my skin is very fair and sensitive. I devised my own skin regiment and am excited to share it with you now. I encourage you to use my formula, but if you’d rather use store bought products to cleanse, moisturize and treat your skin use  this website to research the products and their ingredients so you have the nitty gritty on what you’re using.  Lemon also works as a toner which is great for oily skin, reduces blackheads, and promotes skin elasticity. If your skin is dry it will hydrate and promote elasticity for a smoother softer skin. Honey’s antibacterial nature cleanses the skins surface and tightens the outer skin. more...

How to make a natural lotion, cream, moisturiser

If you live in the US you can use instead 70% isopropyl alcohol (walgreens and walmart sells). – In the US – lotioncrafter and theherbarie (there are others but for ease I’ve chosen these two as they do most/all of the ingredients):- A starting guide of how much emulsifier to use is to add it at 25% (one quarter) of the total of the oil soluble ingredients in your recipe. So if your oil soluble ingredients excluding the emulsifier totals 10% then you’ll be using 2.5% emulsifier. However if you are using lotionpro/lexemul add it at 15% (instead of 25%) of the total oil soluble ingredients, but do not add it below 3% in your actual recipe. Your lotion will last as long as the shortest shelf life ingredient. HUMECTANTS – draw water from the air to your skin, helps moisturise: glycerin (1%-7%) and sodium lactate (1-2%). The amount is whatever you need to make your recipe add up to a total of 100%. So if all your ingredients excluding water add up to 40% then your water % will be 60% as 60% is needed for the recipe to add up to 100%. If all your ingredients excluding water add up to 30% then your water % will be 70%. This is an antioxidant and so helps extend the life of your oils very slightly. Note the expiry date of each of your ingredients – the shelf life for your lotion will be that of the ingredient which will expire first. The recipes we are using are in grams and we will be making about 400 grams. Don’t forget to add an extra 10% water as at least 10% will evaporate during the 20 mins. more...

Make Your Own Homemade Facial Cleansers . . . 4 All

I INTENDED on making ONE of the recipes and simply writing about the others, but somehow, before I knew what was happening, I was making all FOUR! The first one I tried was the Jojoba Lemon Facial Cleansing Cream. It was too waxy/oily feeling and the consistency of a cleansing cream…which has never been my favorite. Add the jojoba oil (I used coconut oil) and beat, using a hand mixer, for about 5 minutes or until it reaches a creamy consistency. Add this liquid mixture to the cream and beat with a mixing spoon until well combined. Mix in the lemon essential oil and spoon into a container. The second recipe I tried was the Olive Oil Facial Cleanser from The Prairie Cottage . For some reason this one didn’t thicken up like I THOUGHT it would (based on the instructions.) It DID, however, do a nice job of cleansing my face and left it feeling clean AND moisturized.  This cleanser was in SERIOUS contention for my FAVORITE out of the four UNTIL I tried the fourth. The advantages of this recipe are that it is easy and quick to make and that it contains HONEY! more...

Homemade Face Wash – A Natural Facial Cleanser

For years I used commercial face wash products without looking at the ingredients. Now that I have more knowledge about the ingredients used by multinational corporations, I’m more selective about the personal care products I use, and usually prefer to make my own. Want to know about some of the ingredients that may be lurking in your innocent little bottle of store-bought face wash? I’m pretty certain there would not be such glamorous commercials on TV for certain skin care products if the truth about ingredients was advertised! And what do you know, the first ingredient in most of them was castile soap, followed by ingredients such as aloe vera gel, essential oils, Vitamin E, vegetable glycerin, etc. The chamomile tea and other simple, gentle ingredients makes it perfect for sensitive skin, but this facial wash can be tailored to meet the needs of your exact skin type – I’ll show you how in a bit. You can mix up similar versions of this, diluting it more if you like, and use as a body wash. I prefer to purchase mine at local health food stores where I can bring my own container and refill for about half the price of purchasing a brand new bottle. Essential oils can also be purchased (and smelled before purchasing!) at most health food stores. This face wash can be stored for at least a few weeks. Refrigerating the face wash will also extend its shelf life. more...

Making your own facial cleanser is a great way to avoid putting chemicals on your skin (and into your bloodstream). The beauty of using honey as a facial cleanser is that there is no need for mixing or measuring! Honey is an excellent cleanser for every skin type. To wash your face with honey: For make-up free skin, squirt a small amount of honey (less than a teaspoon) into the palm of your hand. Rub the honey between your palms and then massage into your face. (For further details, see Removing Make-up the Honey, Face Wash Way .) Variations: Mix a little milk or cream with honey for a a cleanser especially suited to dry skin. For extremely oily skin, try adding a little lemon juice to the honey. The oil cleansing method has grown increasingly popular over the past few years, and for good reason; cleaning your face with oil makes skin soft and radiant. Let it sit for a few minutes, and wash off with warm water. Leave yogurt on the skin for a minute or two (if you have time), then wash off with warm water. Cleansing grains gently exfoliate as well as clean the skin.
