I INTENDED on making ONE of the recipes and simply writing about the others, but somehow, before I knew what was happening, I was making all FOUR! The first one I tried was the Jojoba Lemon Facial Cleansing Cream. It was too waxy/oily feeling and the consistency of a cleansing cream…which has never been my favorite. Add the jojoba oil (I used coconut oil) and beat, using a hand mixer, for about 5 minutes or until it reaches a creamy consistency. Add this liquid mixture to the cream and beat with a mixing spoon until well combined. Mix in the lemon essential oil and spoon into a container. The second recipe I tried was the Olive Oil Facial Cleanser from The Prairie Cottage . For some reason this one didn’t thicken up like I THOUGHT it would (based on the instructions.) It DID, however, do a nice job of cleansing my face and left it feeling clean AND moisturized. This cleanser was in SERIOUS contention for my FAVORITE out of the four UNTIL I tried the fourth. In a Cream formulation, the water-base percentage is about 60-75 % and the oil-base is about 20-30 % of the total, with the other percentages being the emulsifier agent, preservatives and additives for a total of 100 % . For a All Natural Cream of the First type, one can use a Beeswax/borax combo as the emulsifier along with lecithin for a second emulsifier to bind the water and oil bases together. The water in the cream is suspended in the oil base. Or you can still use the beeswax/borax combination by using a 70-75 % water base for the cream. The oil in the cream is suspended in the water base. Oil base –- Total Percentage = 32 % You can add stiffness to your cream by adding 1 % palm stearic acid to the oil base, decreasing the oil amount by 1 % as well. Oil base –- Total Percentage = 20 % I use Rose and oatmeal and rooibos herbal water or just rose hydrosol as my water in the water-base for a soothing base. Note that the water base is increased, the oil base decreased to allow this cream to sink into the skin quickly, just as a lotion would do. Notes: For a body cream a “lighter” oil is used that absorbs quickly, a higher percentage of water, a lower percentage of emulsifier for a light thin cream that will spread easily and absorb into skin quickly. If you’re just starting out with DIY beauty products, these are great to have on hand and you can make many, many recipes with just these ingredients! For those sensitive to coconut, grass fed organic beef tallow can also be used and it is great for the skin, though you will need to add essential oils to cover the mild scent. I use shea butter in my lotion, lotion bars, deodorant, face cream, baby lotion, diaper cream and many other recipes! Cocoa butter is another “butter” and a great addition to natural beauty recipes. It can be used interchangeably with Shea Butter, though I find that my favorite recipes include Shea butter, Cocoa Butter , and Coconut Oil. Recipes like smoother lotions, baby oil, salves, and after-shave balms often need to be thinner than coconut oil and the butters will allow. Apricot Kernel has the most gentle scent and almond oil is also relatively unscented. I keep Arrowroot on hand for thickening sauces when cooking and it also gets added to a lot of natural recipes like deodorant, baby powder, diaper cream, dry shampoo, etc. Not technically needed, but essential oils give great natural scents to DIY beauty recipes and can also be very mood lifting. Through the years, I’ve spent a lot of money trying out different products to deal with acne, blackheads, and oily skin. To start out, I researched a lot about natural skincare and learned about the oil cleansing method (where you actually use oil to cleanse your face), read about different kinds of oils, and found different resources for cosmetic compound developments. I decided that I wanted to try a combination of oil cleansing, all natural skin exfoliant, and the old fashioned method of using cold cream at night. The oil cleansing method relies on the theory that clean oil is the best way to draw out the dirt and oil that clogs pores. My next step in developing my own skincare was deciding what kinds of oil to use, I’ve read about the benefits of grape seed oil, almond oil, jojoba oil, extra virgin olive oil (EVOO), and extra virgin coconut oil (EVCO) for your skin. I kept all of this in mind while developing my skincare routine, and still decided to stick with using extra virgin coconut oil on my face, while mixing it with other products. I still wanted to use coconut oil to cleanse my face, though, so I thought the best compromise would be to combine coconut oil with other elements to clean and exfoliate my skin. The natural skincare regimen I decided on starts out with the old housewife tradition of nightly removing makeup with cold cream. (read recipe below) To remove my makeup, I use my hand to apply the cold cream all over my face (except my eyes, more on that later), and then use a clean, slightly damp washcloth to wipe it all off. On days I don’t wear makeup, I just skip to the next step up gently scrubbing my face with the exfolient I made Then I apply a very light coat of the cold cream and allow it to sit greasily on my face all night, which softens my skin, reduces the appearance of scars and fine lines, and also reduces my skin’s tendency to overproduce oil. In the morning I just dab at my face with a warm, damp washcloth and apply my makeup as usual. I moisten a cotton ball with this solution, wipe it across my eyes until all of the makeup is removed, and then begin the rest of my skincare regimen as mentioned in the above paragraph.
