It may be the first step in your skin care regimen—but for most of us, putting serious thought into a daily face wash is something of a last priority. “Our skin can’t function properly at night—repair and regenerate itself—if it’s swimming in toxic chemicals,” she says of the importance of removing every last trace of makeup, sunscreen, and pollutant at the end of the day through a methodical cleansing ritual. Historical texts reference Korean women using plant-derived oils both to smooth on face powders—creating their own sort of oil-based foundations—and to remove them from the skin. In Japan, double-cleansing was born of necessity, as cleansing oils were the only means of removing the white paint-like base that women traditionally wore as a sign of beauty; they followed with a foaming cleanser to refresh the skin and remove oil residue. And for those looking to incorporate double-cleansing into their routine, here’s how to do it right: Smooth an oil-based formula onto dry skin, circling it over face and eyes for about a minute before removing it with a warm cloth.

Not cleaning their face twice a day: Although dirty skin is not a cause of acne, if you have acne and you don't cleanse your face twice a day, there will be a build-up of dead skin cells that will clog pores and cause breakouts. Always avoid soaps and bar cleansers, which are too drying for skin; the ingredients that keep a bar cleanser or bar soap in bar form can clog pores. The average Korean woman has easily more than ten products in her daily skin-care routine, and the country's philosophy of good skin dates back to the Dongui Bogam, a Korean medical text from the 1600s. Green tea: This natural wonder has long been touted for its countless health and beauty benefits, and now Korean brand Amore Pacific has perfected the science behind cultivating and extracting the most powerful benefits of EGCG, an antioxidant only found in green tea. All of the EGCG comes from green tea grown in fields on the Korean island of Jeju, which has the optimal climate for the most potent tea leaves. Ginseng: Used in traditional Eastern medicine, ginseng has many health and beauty benefits and is only found naturally in a few places in the world; Korea's ginseng is prized the most. Airless pumps: Another skin-care innovation that has taken the Korean market by storm is airless dispensing pumps. What makes this sort of packaging so special is that it keeps the product from being contaminated and oxidized.
Coming from the United States, my image of skincare was deep cleansing followed by a cream moisturizer and any spot treatments you might need (like acne or wrinkle treatments). I think face washes and cleansers are probably the most similar to what’s available in the United States (you can even buy Dove face wash if you want to!) Cream face washes are the most abundant, though cream scrubs, peeling gels and acne washes are are also easy to obtain. Keshousui is a transparent, moisturizing liquid that you apply to the face with either cotton puffs or your bare hands. There are lots of different kinds of keshousui available that can do anything from simply moisturizing your skin, to whitening and even prevent wrinkling. There are generally two basic varieties of keshousui on the market: しっとり (shittori) – moisturizing – and さっぱり (sappari) – “refreshing,” which is not as moisturizing. A couple of very basic keshousui that are good to start out with are Barrier Repair (left) or Tonyuu Infurabon (right.) They’re both widely available, inexpensive and seem to be ok for sensitive or combo skin (which I have.) Depending upon your skin type, the season, and what kind of effect you are looking for, you’ll probably want to experiment with your keshousui. I’ll admit that this is one area of skincare where I’m still not particularly familiar with the products, but essentially, after applying the keshosui, you finish with a creamy emulsion known as 乳液 (nyuueki). There are a ton of skincare products on the market, so many that it would be difficult for me to provide a remotely comprehensive guide to products in Japan. However, I hope that this little post will help people become more familiar with Japanese skin care and perhaps even guide you to a couple of good products. There are tons of collagen products saturating the Japanese market, all of which promise to give you beautiful, supple skin, but there is currently no medical data that proves collagen when ingested or applied externally has any effect at all.

But with Soft Whip, which happens to be a drugstore cleanser, the natural oils of the skin are left intact and yet the sebum which causes acne, pimples, and blackheads is successfully removed. The texture of the cleanser is soft, almost creamy and it lathers into soft wash foam when water is added to it. This wash is suitable for all skin types and is very popular in Japan. When you DHC’s Cleansing Oil to the face, its texture changes from oily to a smooth and almost creamy consistency that seeps into the skin and helps to melt off the makeup. Ten Tips for Treating Acne on Asian Skin. Acne products that work on other skin types can be harmful for Asian skin. Treating acne on Asian skin presents special challenges that are often overlooked by the manufacturers of the most popular acne care products. The products that work on other skin types can be harmful for Asian skin. Here are ten useful tips for treating acne on Asian skin. Products that work for other skin types often can be harmful to Asian skin. People who have Asian skin types, and especially people who have Japanese skin types, are especially sensitive to detergents. The unfortunate reality is that when people with Asian skin tones use hydroquinone to remove brown spots on the skin left by acne, they often develop black and blue spots caused by onchronosis. If you have an Asian skin type, chances are that any product that leaves your skin feeling “tingly” can cause irritation and even brown spotting of the skin. Overexposure to the sun can leave brown spots on the skin, and so can acne. Tea tree oil is usually not a good idea for treating acne on Asian skin.
In Japan, acne prevention and treatment begins early in life with oils and essences rubbed into the skin. Pour out about a dime-sized portion of pure Camellia oil and rub it into the affected skin. Let it soak in for about a minute or two, then wash your face with cold water to remove the excess oil and close your pores. Of the tea for five minutes. You can also make a poultice, or paste, with the rooibos tea for topical application. Mix the dry tea leaves with just enough water to dampen it and make a paste-like substance. Apply the mixture to the affected area and cover with gauze or cloth to get good contact. Let it soak in for 10 to 15 minutes, then wash the face with cold water and soap. Green tea with citrus added is a very good antioxidant source and also good for overall health. Washing your face with a good soap several times a day will help prevent the oil buildup and bacterial growth that causes the acne. By cleansing the inside of the body, less oil is produced and pores are less likely to be clogged when there isn't as much oil on the skin.
If you have sensitive skin or simply feel that the cleansing oils are a little too harsh for you, this cold cream makeup remover may be the solution. My skin will tell you, that I grew up in a middle class household, I was relatively healthy, and spent time in the sun. I love skin, in all its shapes and forms, from the leathery skin of avid hikers, to the bleached skin of older Japanese women, or the plastic looking skin of male body builders. Skin is not always beautiful, and it doesn’t have to be, the most interesting stories are written on the most wretched skin. Japanese women seem to age at half-pace, and I want the same for myself. The majority of my skin care products are Japanese now, and I hope I never have to go back, the method is effective, and I enjoy clear skin all the time. Diet is probably the most difficult thing to change, but is crucial to maintaining young and beautiful skin. Fair skin is considered very beautiful, and so during the summer months, Japanese armor themselves against the rays of the sun. There are many steps in the daily skin ritual in order (Steps 1-4 should be done morning and Night) Although both my husband and I are acne prone, cleaning our faces with oil as the first step has done wonders for our skin. Foam removes dirt and makeup from your face, but doesn’t strip it of the lipids that protect your skin and keep it tight (young looking) Makeup should be removed as early as possible in the day, if you know you are going to spend the evening in, wash your face as soon as you get home, the less time pollution and foundation sits on your skin, the better it will look.
