Korean Skin Care — The Dermatology Review

Korean Skin Care. When it comes to Korean skin care, the women from this region have hundreds of years of history with caring for the skin in ways that get rid of wrinkles and create supple skin. Typical Korean skin care products contain a wide array of natural and exotic ingredients to maintain healthy skin. Basics of Korean Skin Care. In a typical Korean skin care routine the day should begin with drinking a tall glass of water, followed by an invigorating facial wash. A key ingredient in many Korean skin care products is snail slime. Birds nest is another ingredient in many Korean skin care products. The syn-ake line of beauty products in Korean skin care is an alternative version of what we know as Botox in the United States. Syn-ake does not need to be applied through injections, and is an ingredient in facial serums in Korean skin care products. In Korean skin care, bee venom has many of the same properties as syn-ake. Bee venom is often applied to the skin topically, as an ingredient in creams and moisturizers. more...

The Do's and Don'ts of Korean Skincare - Beauty Banter

The Do’s & Don’ts of Korean Skincare. As you’ve probably heard, Korean skincare is the hot new trend on every beauty enthusiasts’ stained lips these days. If your Bikram Yoga class isn’t giving you that highly coveted “inner glow”, this is the skincare regimen to try. Put simply, Korean skincare is a very different industry from what is sold and marketed here in the United States, particularly given the difference in price point. Korean women (and men!) have a dedicated routine that is motivated by prevention. Koreans stay out of the sun, yet still religiously apply sunscreen, and aim to have skin so perfect that limited makeup is even needed. As Charlotte explained, “it’s a misconception that women need to devote endless time to a Korean skincare routine and follow a tedious 10 or 12 step process. Despite this claim, Charlotte points out that “many Korean skincare products include chemicals that are naturally found in your own body.” Yes, you read that correctly — certain chemicals are good for you. Here are 5 key Korean skincare products that you should consider working into your skincare routine, ASAP: Korean toner doesn’t contain alcohol, and the ultimate goal is to soothe and soften skin. The best advertisement for these products are the complexions of those who follow a Korean skincare routine. Best Korean Beauty Products - 6 Amazing Skin Care Products

These badass gel-like blemish stickers keep you from picking at/popping your pimples and contain salicylic acid that helps break down dead skin and unplug clogged pores. To apply, peel the sticker from the backing sheet and pop it over your pimple before you go to sleep. First, you apply the blackhead/whitehead removal mask over clean skin, making sure it lays snug against your nose. During this step, the dead skin is broken down, which loosens the blackhead so it may be removed. OK, try not to get grossed out here, but snail mucus (the shiny slime that a snail leaves behind as it's going on its merry way) is actually super-hydrating to your skin: It promotes cellular turnover, it's healing, and it protects your skin's barrier from environmental elements like pollution, which is proven to break down collagen and elastin prematurely. "Putting this snail secretion-containing mask on your face will give you the results of going to a spa, but only in a matter of 15 minutes," Schook says. "Not only are you getting the hydration benefits from the snail mucus infused in the mask, there are other skin-plumping ingredients like glycerin, sea water, aloe extract, etc., that are being pushed deeper into your skin because a gel-like mask sits [and] sticks better onto the skin than a cloth mask." This heroic mask also contains ingredients like rosemary, which has antibacterial properties that help fight free radical damage (this can lead to premature aging and cell mutation, which can lead to skin cancer); melissa officinalis leaf extract, which is good for calming and brightening the skin; and hexapeptides that help build collagen. "This mask is fool-proof," Schook says, "because it won't dry out your skin if you leave it on too long, whereas cloth masks, once they deliver their ingredients and transfer the moisture onto your skin, can actually suck your own skin's moisture back out of your skin if left on too long, which is why you really have to stick to the time period that the packaging notates." This mask also contains shea butter, vitamin E, snail secretion, aloe, and beta-glucan, which is a yeast that dissolves dead skin cells. What's more, there isn't any water or fillers in this blend, which can breed bacteria over time; instead, glycerin is added to further hydrate the skin. more...

Korean BB Cream Picks from Beauty Blogger

Koreans have been at the forefront of the beauty industry for centuries, but it wasn't until a little product called  BB cream hit the market that cosmetics companies from around the world wanted to know everything there is to know about Korean beauty innovation. Read on for more information about Koran beauty, skincare and BB creams. A BB cream is sort of like foundation, except it's light in consistency and coverage, and, most importantly, it improves the quality of your skin. Caolion works best for me, but it might not be the best BB cream for you. My skin was highly sensitive after treatment, but this BB cream helped calm the irritation and was surprisingly soothing on my skin. Caolion Sensitive BB Cream doesn't provide the best coverage, but the application is very smooth. I personally love to put a bit of BB cream on the back of my hand and apply it with a beauty blender sponge. The following brands are the biggest and most influential Korean brands: more...

There are a ton of whitening products in the Korean and Japanese skincare markets, and many of the multi-functioning products tout whitening properties as one of the major attributes. New Splash Masks Korean Skin Care - Marie Claire

Basically, these splash masks are unlike any mask you've tried before, mainly because they come in liquid form and take all of 15 to 30 seconds to use (meaning that I could have been on time to those parties). The masks are a blend of botanical extracts and lactic acid, which helps to re-texturize your skin. To use this mask, you mix about a capful of the stuff with a bowl of water, and then splash (as the name suggests) the mixture on your face for under half a minute, rinse, and boom—you're done. If you are mess-prone or just really not into adding extra dirty dishes to the ever-growing pile in your sink, you can also take the mask into your shower, pour a capful of product into your palms, and pat onto your face for 20 seconds or so. The video below shows just how to use the mask, with music, graphics, and all. Results included soft, radiant, and glow-y skin, and the masks have been selling out at glowrecipe.com . Blithe Splash Masks come in soothing and healing green tea, (energizing) yellow citrus and honey, and rejuvenating purple berry, with green tea as the fan favorite. more...

Why I Love Korean Skin - Care : One Vogue Editor on Where to

In terms of beauty, we were diametrically opposed: Where I existed in the easy, low-maintenance, zero-to-one-step French skin-care camp, my roommate followed a strict, traditional Korean regimen of as many as ten serums, lotions, patches, and creams. Our respective shelves in the bathroom cabinet looked like two different planets—it was the first time I had ever looked at a shelf of beauty products and thought to myself, “What is all of this stuff?” The more I use the accessibly priced and adorably packaged K-beauty products, I realize that if skin care is considered a luxury in America, in Korea it’s a right, and they make it fun, which is why everyone is doing it. I’ve built an arsenal of facial mists, oils (both for cleansing and for moisturizing), face masks, sponges, serums, lotions, and masks for day, night, and a longer, more nourishing routine on the weekends. The trick, for me, has been figuring out which ingredients work best for my skin, and then finding the best products that contain those ingredients. One of the best parts about the surge in the popularity of Korean beauty is that now these products are so accessible: If you don’t want to place orders from stores halfway around the world and wait weeks for things to arrive, it’s as easy as getting on the New York City subway. If you’re going to embark on your own Korean beauty shopping excursion, and I recommend that you do, I can tell you that the best part about these stores are the people who work in them: expert women who will speak to you openly and enthusiastically about their skin-care routines. more...

Inside The Booming Korean Skincare Market - Fast Company

Inside The Booming Korean Skincare Market. Demanding consumers, R&D labs, and even the Korean government have helped bring foreign beauty products to Target and elsewhere. "Just sampling the products, I was like, ‘Wow, this is a whole new world,’" she says. The success of Korean beauty here is not intuitive. Park isn’t the first non-Asian to appreciate the wonders of Korean skincare. Since 2011, startups such as Momomango, Soko Glam, and Peach and Lily have launched to offer American consumers Asian beauty products from brands like Amorepacific, Aromatica, Be the Skin, Cremorlab, Dr. But interest in Korean skincare isn’t so much an American trend as the far-reaching ripples of a massive Korean beauty craze fed by competitive suppliers, a supportive government and, most of all, incredibly demanding consumers. Mass retailers say Korean beauty products were the next step in their quest to bring their customers the highest-quality products. The list goes on and on." Target, through a spokesperson, said it chose to exclusively sell 22 products from skincare brand Laneige after "comprehensive guest research" showed that "Korean skincare products are among the best in the world." Mary Schook, licensed aesthetician and owner of MS Apothecary , estimates this competitive atmosphere puts Korean beauty products 12 to 14 years ahead of the U. more...

Top 5 Korean beauty stores in the US with the best products

Top 5 Korean beauty stores in the US with the best products. Koreans never tire in their pursuit for beauty, which is often either made possible by a strictly regimented and vast arsenal of beauty products or plastic surgery. With the help of a few Korean beauty imports, it’s never been easier to do so — especially since they’ve gone mainstream (there’s a Missha located at the mall close by me!). However, it’s different from regular pencil eyeliners due to being completely waterproof and therefore smudge proof, which comes in handy in the hot, humid summer heat. However, some do complain that the brand is not 100% natural, as many products contain synthetic ingredients like propylene glycol, alcohol, mineral oil and parabens. Still, for items that are adorably packaged and pleasantly scented, this place isn’t half bad! The fast-absorbing, clear gel is multipurpose, making it a great investment at only around $6 for over a cup of product. The company has been around since 2000, and just three years later, it has already built a solid fan following of over 10 million. BB cream lovers, take note: at the end of the day, all you really want is to take it all off and have a smooth, clean face, no? This top-rated cleanser does all that and even removes the waterproof kind, so you don’t have to sweat over getting all that gunk off before bed. more...

My Updated Korean Skincare Routine - The Wanderlust Project

This one is focused on my nighttime skincare routine, using all Korean skincare products, and following the typical Korean skincare routine. It’s wintertime now, so my skincare routine is focused on getting the most amount of moisture into my skin as possible. I use one pump and massage it into my slightly damp skin. I use this one when I feel like my skin is extra dry or dull, as it’s a very moisturizing toner. If it’s around that time of the month, or I feel like my skin might be having some issues, I use the AC Care Water Essence, which I reviewed here . Before Winter really hit, I was using the AC Care Bee’s Cure Serum and the Repair Complex as my serum and emulsion, but I found that my skin didn’t feel moisturized enough (winter is rough), so I switched to the Missha Super Aqua Marine Cell Intensive Serum and Control Emulsion. I pump the serum into my hands, rub them together and gently pat it on my face. My nighttime routine is when I pile on the moisture, so that’s why I use both a cream and sometimes a sleeping pack. I use the Missha Super Aqua Ultra Water-Full Cream, which was totally an impulse buy after the sales woman tested a bit on my hand and I sort of melted. It’s perfect for people with dry skin, or for people who want a little moisture boost in the winter. I like this cream so much I actually use it in the daytime too. After applying my cream, I will sometimes opt to add just that extra layer of moisture and use my Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Deep Moisture Sleeping Pack. And I know some people may think that my skin must look like an oil spill by the time I go to bed, but nope. That’s the beauty of Korean products, they all seem to magically absorb into my skin, instead of just sitting on top of it. more...

The Latest in Korean Beauty Products - W Magazine

It’s prime time in Seoul, and on the TV in my hotel room a panel of women are conducting a painstaking analysis of facial cleansing wipes. And the very thorough panel on my TV has left me with only one question: Where can I buy this stuff? “Consumers get very spoiled.” Indeed, the discoveries Peach and Lily has brought to the U. A favorite is the Ten Cremor for Face Smooth Pudding, an antiaging cream that feels like custard and melts into the skin. Yoon decides to introduce the potion, and 11 other Cremorlab products, on her site immediately. Glowing, über-moisturized, babylike skin has become the hallmark of Korean beauty in the past five years, and it has not only set off an avalanche of nuanced terms for glowiness like chok chok (which essentially translates to “plump and moist”), but also sparked a boom in innovative products that go well beyond BBs. It’s located in the plastic surgery district, which is plastered with before-and-after ads and chockablock with hotel-hospital hybrids. And they’re hardly the only procedure on the Dr. The category was kick-started by the success of the Japanese brand SK-II’s Facial Treatment Essence and has snowballed throughout Asia, with countless varieties now on the market. Made with maple tree sap, it boasts hydrating molecules said to be the ideal size for penetrating skin and has acne-fighting antibacterial properties. more...

5 Fascinating Trends in Korean Skin Care - Skin and Tonics

There was a time when the harvesting of these birds nests from their natural caves was ecologically devastating, but the days of cave harvesting are over. I was able to find research backing the skincare benefit claims of some of the individual components of a bird’s nest, but could find no research in English that studied the bird’s nest as a whole in terms of skincare benefits. But if the skincare benefits are as real as they seem, I certainly don’t want to miss out. Bee venom has been used for years to treat arthritis, back pain, and rheumatism, but as a skincare ingredient, it’s still a newcomer. The idea is that the skin benefits from it because of a compound contained in the venom called “melitten.”  Melitten contains anti-inflammatory properties that are said to be stronger than hydrocortisone. I was unable to find a completed study specifically regarding the effects of bee venom in skincare. No doubt you’ve seen American products advertising stem cell technology, but the difference is that the stem cells in American products are plant derived. The skincare benefits of using these stem cells, sometimes called called RG 2, is increased cell regeneration and sun damage reversal. There have been many studies done on the efficacy of stem cell technology in skincare, and it looks as though the claims are true. Stem cell based skincare is huge in Korea, with many experts arguing that it’s the greatest innovation in skincare to date.  It has the potential to be huge here, but there is a lot of controversy over stem cell research and usage in this country. Most products featuring Syn-ake are serums, although there are some skincare lines that feature moisturizing creams and emulsions containing the compound. Like bee venom, Syn-ake is touted as a Botox alternative, but what sets it apart is that there have actually been studies done on its safety and efficacy. What I’ve learned from all this is that I apparently have no boundaries when it comes to skincare. more...
