Ten Tips for Treating Acne on Asian Skin. Acne products that work on other skin types can be harmful for Asian skin. Treating acne on Asian skin presents special challenges that are often overlooked by the manufacturers of the most popular acne care products. The products that work on other skin types can be harmful for Asian skin. Here are ten useful tips for treating acne on Asian skin. Products that work for other skin types often can be harmful to Asian skin. People who have Asian skin types, and especially people who have Japanese skin types, are especially sensitive to detergents. The unfortunate reality is that when people with Asian skin tones use hydroquinone to remove brown spots on the skin left by acne, they often develop black and blue spots caused by onchronosis. If you have an Asian skin type, chances are that any product that leaves your skin feeling “tingly” can cause irritation and even brown spotting of the skin. Overexposure to the sun can leave brown spots on the skin, and so can acne. Tea tree oil is usually not a good idea for treating acne on Asian skin.
There are a ton of whitening products in the Korean and Japanese skincare markets, and many of the multi-functioning products tout whitening properties as one of the major attributes. The nice thing about this layering technique is that you are not obligated to use Asian skincare products to do it. There are a lot of online shops as well as Amazon and Ebay sellers that carry Korean & Japanese skincare products. This is a list of online stores and sellers that I know carry authentic products from Korean and Japanese skincare brands. Wishtrend – Wishtrend is one of the first online Korean Beauty retailers to pop up on the scene, and they carry a large array of products from brands that are sometimes hard to find in other places. The selection is HUGE, products are authentic, and the prices are very, very low. They have a huge selection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean skincare products. I Am Love Shop – Huge selection of Korean skincare products from most of the major brands, such as Etude House, Lioele, Missha, OST, Aritaum, Innisfree, Ciracle, and many others. Cosmetic Love on Amazon – This shop has a great variety of Korean cosmetics and skincare products, and the prices are very good. The Beauty Wolf – This is a newcomer to the beauty blogging scene covering a lot of Korean makeup and skincare products, as well as a few Western products.
Then you have the extra stuff: the sheet masks and spot treatments and sleeping packs and all sorts of things. What are the must have essentials that you need? I’m here to help you create your own Korean skincare routine. First things first, keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to use Korean skincare products in a Korean skincare routine. If you have a ton of stuff from Sephora, you can use that. Second, analyze what type of skin you have. All of these things will effect the type of products you use. One of my favorite things about Korean cosmetics is that each brand has multiple skin care lines, so if you have acne prone skin, you can head to Etude and pick up the AC Clinic line, or if you like Innisfree you can pick up the entire Jejubija line. You know you need to wash your face, use a toner, and a moisturizer. You don’t have to spend a hundreds dollars at first. Introduce new products into your routine slowly and carefully, and before you know it, you’ll have no where to put all of your Korean goodies! Cleanser A cleanser is possibly the most important thing you can buy, so make sure to buy a quality one that won’t dry out your skin. If you wear makeup, you also need to get an oil cleanser, as a good oil cleanser will break up all the makeup and dirt from your day.

So, as I mentioned in my previous Korean beauty posts, most of the products initially listed in my routine were great but not great enough for trouble/acne-prone skin. The rest in the photo below were freebies and samples, one of the advantages of buying products from w2beauty . The products include: ….and different samples of products from Benton, Sulawhasoo, Su:m, The Faceshop and Mizon. While i like w2beauty because of the reward system, sheet masks and samples, you can get these products at lesser prices on Amazon and Ebay but without guarantee of free sheet masks and samples.
My Acne Story. I am re-writing + re-sharing my (past) acne story because some of you readers have requested for more information. If you have read my previous post on "My Acne Story", which has currently been replaced by this post, you already know how bad my acne was in the past. Let me share with you My Acne Story . I still remember it was Year 2009, somewhere in November-December, my acne started to deteriorate from mild to moderate. Before my acne became worse, my life routine was flipped upside-down and messed up. As I was a newbie and had completely zero knowledge on beauty stuff, I have no idea what to use so I just randomly bought and tried some skin care products from the drugstores. I panicked each day when my acne seemed to get worse and worse instead of getting better. And I felt even more depressed when people commented about my acne. It may not be the most worst acne case on Earth but to me, it was a nightmare. I switched to a skin care routine with products that were suitable for my skin type and after many trials and errors, my acne started improving. However, my skin was left with tons of red, brown acne marks/scars. If you would like to know what products I used to heal my acne, please visit " My Skin Care Routine " page.
Wonwoo Choi at Wells Dermatology and Medical Spa in Gangnam, Seoul, when I was in Korea for the summer. Choi is one of the most coveted medical dermatologists in Seoul and his specialties are in acne scar remodeling, laser treatments for hyperpigmentation, and non-surgical face lifting. But after one consultation (followed by two months of relatively rigorous treatment), I learned that ridding yourself of acne without destroying your skin in the process takes work—serious work. Gently massage face with a serum that hydrates and nourishes the skin. A chilled calming mask is used to soothe the irritated skin. The coolness of the mask helps to calm irritated skin. A mask pack is used to tighten the pores and further calm the skin. The whole process is wrapped up with a Korean skincare routine . Choi is an artist, in addition to a really good dermatologist, several weeks of facials were followed with brightening laser treatments and UV treatments that serve to rid the skin of any acne scarring. These lasers can be used to remove hyperpigmentation as well, and it is the most popular treatment in Korea. Immediately after these laser treatments, a similar process as the one above is used to nourish the skin. The difference lies in the vitamin C—they have brightening and cell-regenerating benefits, but is not easily absorbed by the skin through simple serums or creams. When trying any sort of peel at home, especially if it’s meant to address stubborn acne, make sure you have a follow-up regimen that will help your skin get all the nutrients it needs. But knowing how to handle it is the first step in actually caring for your skin.
Here are the steps for a typical Korean skin care routine: Most people think toners are useless/overkill/drying to the skin, but if you pick the right toner for your skin type, it will be well worth your money. While many Western toners are designed to simply balance your skin's p H levels, many Asian toners aim to do that AND hydrate the skin with nutrients. I like to think that this is THE product to use when you're unhappy or unsatisfied with your skin in someway. Okay, so emulsion may not be for everyone, so depending on the season and/or your skin type, you may or may not need to use am emulsion. If you have oily skin, you may not need to use emulsions in your daily skin care routine. That way, your skin can heal while you sleep (which is, by the way, super important to your skincare routine!), and you wake up with beautiful, radiant skin :) You would use the exfoliator or peel after your gentle cleanser and before your toner. Sheet masks are great for any skin types, and should be used depending on your skin type. Depending on the season, the condition of your skin, etc., you may want to use sheet masks 1-3 times a week.

Since I lived in Korea during the time my acne got worse and my mother is Korean, she’s the one who recommended and ordered these Korean skin care products for me. This is the most important step in keeping your skin hydrated and helping the products absorb into the skin. I keep the skin wet and pat my face to help my skin absorb some of the water. This is my day routine, at night it’s the same except I’ll also use eye cream to help reduce eye bags and prevent any future eye wrinkles. The AC Clinic Anti Trouble toner’s name is technically just “SKIN 79 AC Clinic Anti Trouble” but it is a toner since it states so on the back of the product. The 2nd product from this line is the SKIN 79 AC Clinic Anti Trouble Lotion. This product claims to be a “soothing lotion caring trouble by keeping balance of water and oil” (not the best English, but excusable since this is an Asian product and I like it nonetheless). This product isn’t too thick or oily and actually absorbs into the skin quickly. It takes care of my normal skin areas (my forehead and cheeks), but for my chin and nose, it’s not moisturizing enough so I also use a cream for that area. Apparently this product is pretty pricey (at least for me, at around $35 USD), but my mom is the one who tried this ISA KNOX line, liked it, and bought the set for me to also try out. It will sit on top of the skin when first applied, but give it about a minute and it’ll absorb and feels great! I like that this comes in a tube since it’s more sanitary and won’t taint the product as easily (unlike the ultra moisture cream, where it is in a tub). Most lip balms are waxy and just sits on top of my lips, but this one actually absorbs (unless my lips are ultra dry in which it will just sit on top of the dry, cracked skin).

Best Drying Mask: Mario Badescu. A decent acne mask works by drying up your existing pimples and oil. Mario Badescu's mask is affordable (about $18 online) and lasts a long while. At $55 online, it's a pricier mask than the Mario Badescu one above, but users love the red algae and French clay mask because of its drying and nourishing properties. It's packed with a lot of great ingredients to kill the bacteria that causes acne including salicylic acid, farnesol, and a chamomile extract which has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. The Zeno Acne Clearing Device is an actual hand-held, battery-operated device that is meant to have direct contact with blemishes on your skin. Apparently a heat source adjusts to your skin and transfers heat into the skin's follicle treating the blemish. Apparently, aspirin is brilliant at spot-treating pimples, clearing up acne and itchy patches. In fact, the aspirin mask gets more than 2030 reviews - more than any individual makeup, skincare or hair product - on Makeupalley so I had to share it with you because 85 percent of these reviews are by women who would "try it again."

Cleansing Oil: Nature Republic Chamomile Cleansing Oil ( available here ) Now, I am not usually one for smearing oil on my face, but Korea has shown me the light. Many Korean women use cleansing oil to remove their makeup at the end of the day, and it really does work well as a gentle cleanser. Cleansing oil operates on the premise that like removes like, and using oil will actually remove oil without removing too much… Basically, you don’t want to dry out your skin too much and get that tight, sore feeling, because that will just lead to your face overproducing sebum (oil) like it’s going out of fashion. Nature Republic’s Chamomile Cleansing Oil.

I asked Alice all kinds of questions about what’s trending in Korea, what her personal must-have products are, and what trends are on the way out. For the story – one day, I went to a cosmetic shop to buy the foundation again and the shop assistant asked me which skincare products I use. – Leaders AC Stop Foam Cleansing for the days I have some troubles on my skin. – The Face Shop’, Innisfree, Etude House mask pack series. I love Laneige’s skincare products, especially the Water Bank line. Innisfree recently launched a new line of skincare products: The Balhyo line. And Laneige’s eyeshadow are always amazing, and top of the list. This is a kind of history of Korean Skincare Trends and the hit items: As of now, I can see that the Syn-ake products are not so popular and the honey line is not that special, so it’s declining. For the other trends, I still see people using and buying them. For the moment, I have no other project than improving the shop and offering better services and experiences to my customers. I still have so many brands to put into the shop (and that’s so much work and especially time consuming ^.^) . I now order from this shop regularly, and the service has been great. All products are fresh from the manufacturer, and there are plenty of samples included.

It’s ok, I’m at peace with it, and I’m just going to do my best from the outside working in. This means that my skin is thinner than that of folks from many other parts of the world and that I will end up looking like a crumpled paper bag in time if I skip sunscreen. In the course of treating my acne I need to make sure that I don’t overexfoliate my skin and that I use sunscreen every day. If my skin is feeling peely and stressed due to exfoliation in places, I’ll keep up with my routine, but only on the places that are tolerating it well. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about 30 seconds to move on to the next step. I apply the first essence with a Purederm Micro Fiber pad to keep from applying too much product and to make sure that the application is even across my face. I swipe this all over and let it dry—it takes about one minute to move on to the next step. Two pumps cover my face and dry in about two minutes, leaving my skin not exactly sticky, but sort of thirsty for the next steps. I like to layer just about anything related to acne treatment and healing on in this step, one after the other, from lightest in thickness to heaviest. I always try to wear a moisturizer—my hope is that by the end of my routine my skin is balanced and happy, and still able to handle a light cream. My skin gets two rounds of exfoliation, once in the morning and once at night, so it’s essential that I protect all that new skin I’m exposing by applying sunscreen at the end of my morning routine.
Korean and Japanese women are known to follow a 5-step skin routine. Thoroughly cleanse your skin with makeup remover and cleanser before going to sleep. Facial massage is the secret to glowing skin. Your skin will look visibly fresher, younger and glows after a massage. On the days you do not indulge in a facial massage, apply a mask on your face. Choose a toner that is suitable for your skin type. Essence is easier absorbed and penetrates deep into your skin, better than regular moisturizers. Choose a moisturizer suitable for your skin and use it diligently.

My Korean skincare routine for dry, acne-prone skin. My skin was softer, less dry, and less flaky. Not only does my skin feel rougher and flakier, but my pores, comedones, and blackheads get larger. Using these pads has helped refine my skin texture and keep my blackheads in check. It doesn’t seem to do much except make my skin somewhat softer, though still not as much as the horse oil serum did (which I will talk about in a second!) But for the sake of completion, this is the toner I am currently using. It hasn’t made my skin much softer since then, but that’s okay—for softness, let’s go to the next product! 5.) Guerisson 9-Complex Essence: for major skin softening! Within the first few days, my skin felt like velvet–yes, velvet! 6.) Guerisson 9-Complex Cream: for helping my dry skin in general (review here) This is the infamous horse oil cream that I love and will be ordering a second jar of very soon! My skin generates a bit of sebum on its own and I no longer feel dry throughout the day. Smoother and softer skin overall. Now, that’s not to say that my skin is perfect!
