The Surprising New Korean Skincare Trend You MUST Try

And there’s more—while research on fermented ingredients in skincare products is just starting, there are already studies that show the efficacy and potency of products are increased when they’re fermented, because ingredients are “broken down” into smaller, more easily absorbed molecules, Chang and Lee say. The Ingredients. Chang and Lee say that as of now, some of the most popular ingredients in Korea include fermented botanicals, like chrysanthemum, dandelion and aloe—the first two have antioxidant properties, while aloe is known as an instant skin soother. Grains, like rice, and proteins, like soy (the fermented version of which is called natto). As for what types of skincare products fermented ingredients are most commonly found in, Lee says they’re used in pretty much everything—from toners to essences, serums, and creams. If you do purchase a product with fermented ingredients, Chang and Lee say to expect the shelf life to be about six to 12 months opened, or 24 to 36 months unopened. Korean women are smart, savvy, and know their skincare stuff—which might explain why they latched onto the fermented ingredient trend so quickly. “Fermented foods are such a healthy staple in the Korean diet (kimchi is just a start!), so it was readily embraced for topical skincare as well,” Chang says. “The fermented skincare trend is thriving because it’s based on things that have historically worked.” And as for the trend carrying over to the U. “Fermented skincare is going to appeal to a new lineup of consumers in the U. Who are little more adventurous,” she says, citing the appeal in the natural ingredients, as well as skin compatibility. “Anecdotally, fermented skincare products are much more compatible for all skin types because of the way they’re formulated,” she says. Keep scrolling for some of Yoon, Chang and Lee’s fermented skincare picks! more...

Your Beginner's Guide to Understanding Asian Skincare

From the main differences between Asian and American skin products, to their predictions on the “next big thing” from Asia to take the U. When asked about the main difference between Asian and American beauty products, Yoon and Kim both referred to the influence of the consumer. Kim says that Korean women are very demanding about the products they use on their skin, mainly because they’re more well-versed about skincare than the average American women. “What’s interesting is that—like in any eco-system—you’re only going to be as good as your consumers are demanding, and Korean consumers are the most demanding globally,” Yoon says. She mentions that a lot of outside brands will use Korea as a testing ground for new products: “If you can meet the Korean “bar,” your product can succeed anywhere else in the world.” In other words, since Asian consumers demand and expect more, their products often deliver more. Another big difference between Western beauty products and their Korean and Japanese counterparts are the ingredients. She explains how Korean women will immediately notice if a certain product is filled with cheap ingredients or harsh chemicals, and that they tend to favor more natural ingredients—one reason why botanical-based products are so popular in Asia. “It’s not an obsession with looking young—it’s more the belief that if you respect your skin, it will respect you back and reward you with a beautiful complexion for a long time.” Though they run the full price spectrum, she says that the value you see in Korean products are usually better than with other countries. “Because of the way consumers look for things, brands can’t get away with using cheaper ingredients and hiking up the prices,” she says. Since Yoon and Kim are constantly traveling to Asia to learn about new products and innovations, we asked them to share what they think the next “big thing” in beauty will be to hit the U. Plus, keep clicking the slideshow above for the groundbreaking Korean and Japanese products you NEED to know about! more...

South Korea - Riding the Korean wave - Cosmetics Business

The Korean beauty market is booming and, having charmed the rest of Asia, the country's beauty companies are now looking to raise their profiles in other regions. In the district’s boutiques and department stores, shoppers are as likely to hear Chinese and Japanese spoken as Korean, for South Korea is today a shopping magnet for tourists across the region. South Korea’s cosmetics market has been one of the bright spots of the economy in 2008-2009. South Korea and its top trade partner, China, are now leading Asia out of recession; in the first half of this year South Korea had the fastest GDP growth in the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development rich country zone) and its beauty sector is booming. Given the booming nature of the market and their strong market share, pundits are upbeat; Credit Suisse maintains an ‘outperform’ rating for the two stocks. The remaining 31% of the market is made up of 600-700 small companies, though there are a few up and coming stars among them, such as The Face Shop franchise. “In the early 1990s when international brands came in to Korea, everyone loved to buy them, but now the number one and two players are Korean; their products are proven,” says an executive of an international brand in Seoul. This is the competitiveness of the Korean market.” That said, the market is open to global producers; unlike, say, pharmaceuticals and autos which, foreign importers allege, are subject to numerous barriers. Skin care is the dominant category, particularly with regard to moisturising and whitening products. “This trend is hot in the market right now and will get bigger in coming years. The majority of its products were priced around Won 7,000, and its packaging and natural ingredients won plaudits. more...

A Beginner's Guide to Korean Makeup - Into The Gloss

So, we asked Cho — who also runs the e-commerce site Soko Glam — to give us a rundown of her current favorite overseas products and a few predictions for the “next BB cream.” You heard it here first, people. They’ve dominated the skincare game for, like, centuries, but it wasn't until Koreans incepted, perfected, and popularized BB cream that cosmetics companies throughout the world have been hawk-eyeing their makeup innovations, too. Which is to say, if it’s big in Korea, you can bet that it’s going to be the next billion-dollar global product. The Liner. Nary an eye goes unlined in Korea, so our liner formulas need to pass the test of both the dreaded monsoon season and sub-zero Seoul winters. The Eyebrow Pencil. I prefer the sheer brown color and angled application of Design My Eyebrow Pencil from The Faceshop , that twists up so you never have to sharpen it. The Lip Tint. To recreate the allusion, you can dab Etude House Cherry Tint [ed note: discontinued] or, for an orange-y red, Tony Moly Cat Chu Wink [ed note: discontinued] at the center of your lips. Like all Korean lip tints, both products are adorably packaged (did you miss the cat ears on Tony's?) and smell and taste like jellybeans. The Next Big Thing. This is the next BB cream. more...

5 Fascinating Trends in Korean Skin Care - Skin and Tonics

There was a time when the harvesting of these birds nests from their natural caves was ecologically devastating, but the days of cave harvesting are over. I was able to find research backing the skincare benefit claims of some of the individual components of a bird’s nest, but could find no research in English that studied the bird’s nest as a whole in terms of skincare benefits. But if the skincare benefits are as real as they seem, I certainly don’t want to miss out. Bee venom has been used for years to treat arthritis, back pain, and rheumatism, but as a skincare ingredient, it’s still a newcomer. The idea is that the skin benefits from it because of a compound contained in the venom called “melitten.”  Melitten contains anti-inflammatory properties that are said to be stronger than hydrocortisone. I was unable to find a completed study specifically regarding the effects of bee venom in skincare. No doubt you’ve seen American products advertising stem cell technology, but the difference is that the stem cells in American products are plant derived. The skincare benefits of using these stem cells, sometimes called called RG 2, is increased cell regeneration and sun damage reversal. There have been many studies done on the efficacy of stem cell technology in skincare, and it looks as though the claims are true. Stem cell based skincare is huge in Korea, with many experts arguing that it’s the greatest innovation in skincare to date.  It has the potential to be huge here, but there is a lot of controversy over stem cell research and usage in this country. Most products featuring Syn-ake are serums, although there are some skincare lines that feature moisturizing creams and emulsions containing the compound. Like bee venom, Syn-ake is touted as a Botox alternative, but what sets it apart is that there have actually been studies done on its safety and efficacy. What I’ve learned from all this is that I apparently have no boundaries when it comes to skincare. more...

Interview : Korean Beauty and Skincare Trends with Alice of

I asked Alice all kinds of questions about what’s trending in Korea, what her personal must-have products are, and what trends are on the way out. For the story – one day, I went to a cosmetic shop to buy the foundation again and the shop assistant asked me which skincare products I use. – Leaders AC Stop Foam Cleansing for the days I have some troubles on my skin. – The Face Shop’, Innisfree, Etude House mask pack series. I love Laneige’s skincare products, especially the Water Bank line. Innisfree recently launched a new line of skincare products: The Balhyo line. This is a kind of history of Korean Skincare Trends and the hit items: As of now, I can see that the Syn-ake products are not so popular and the honey line is not that special, so it’s declining. For the other trends, I still see people using and buying them. For the moment, I have no other project than improving the shop and offering better services and experiences to my customers. New Splash Masks Korean Skin Care - Marie Claire

Basically, these splash masks are unlike any mask you've tried before, mainly because they come in liquid form and take all of 15 to 30 seconds to use (meaning that I could have been on time to those parties). The masks are a blend of botanical extracts and lactic acid, which helps to re-texturize your skin. To use this mask, you mix about a capful of the stuff with a bowl of water, and then splash (as the name suggests) the mixture on your face for under half a minute, rinse, and boom—you're done. If you are mess-prone or just really not into adding extra dirty dishes to the ever-growing pile in your sink, you can also take the mask into your shower, pour a capful of product into your palms, and pat onto your face for 20 seconds or so. The video below shows just how to use the mask, with music, graphics, and all. Results included soft, radiant, and glow-y skin, and the masks have been selling out at glowrecipe.com . Blithe Splash Masks come in soothing and healing green tea, (energizing) yellow citrus and honey, and rejuvenating purple berry, with green tea as the fan favorite. more...

If your Bikram Yoga class isn’t giving you that highly coveted “inner glow”, this is the skincare regimen to try.
