Men’s Guide To Skin Care - Paging Dr. NerdLove

I still use the Protective Lotion occasionally when I don't have time to put on both the jojoba oil and sunscreen. If you have skin problems, going to a doctor and actually having things checked out can really help. I can have bad acne that makes my skin horribly inflamed and painful and the yogurt mask definitely helped calm it down. All that stuff in the various orange and white, or green and white, bottles, that basically has 2-3% salycilic acid in it and from my experience makes your skin feel nice to the touch but is about damn worthless for fighting acne or blemishes. In the winter (or for drier skin generally) you can just wipe it off instead of rinsing. But the benzoyl peroxide works well, especially if you put it on before you shower, and leave it on for about 5 minutes. I actually have fairly oily skin, especially on my face, so i need to try and find something for that. I have combination skin, so I only use it at night and moisturize in the morning, but if you have quite oily skin it might be good as a consistent face soap. Toner is bullshit for people with ordinary skin, but for the ordinary acne and flaky skin prone, a cleanser, lotion or sunscreen with salicylic acid or some other alpha hydroxy acid will help. Many of them are astringent and dry out or irritate the skin. Moisturiser: If you have combination skin, the oily areas don't need moisturiser. If you need moisturiser on both the dry and oily areas of the skin it should probably be two separate products. This is a great guide for the best sunscreens and avoiding bad/toxic ingredients: http:/www.ewg.org/2013sunscreen/ I use Burn Out Kids Physical Sunscreen which has been great on my skin and under makeup, but in general I'm quite limited in what I can get over in NZ and have to order Burn Out in from the US anyway. You can get a good starter kit for less than fifty bucks, possibly much less depending on the brand and what's in the kit. A cleanser that is appropriate for your skin, a spot treatment for blemishes that pop up, a scrub to exfoliate every few days, and a moisturizer (you may be able to skip out on this one if you have very oily skin). more...

How to Create the Perfect Acne Skin Care Routine

You can create an acne skin care routine with whatever brand products you choose. A good acne skin care routine is so important for blemish-prone skin. But your daily acne skin care routine doesn't need to take a lot of time - just a few minutes twice a day. Follow the guidelines below to help keep your skin feeling refreshed and clean. Make sure you're using the right cleanser for your skin. Harsh soaps won't clear your acne, but they will irritate your skin. Alcohol-free products are the best choices if your skin is irritated by acne treatments or if you have lots of open pimples. But if toners or astringents seem to over-dry or irritate your skin, don’t use them. Ditto if you're using prescription acne medications (they already dry out your skin). You aren't going to harm your skin by not using a toner . Step 3: Apply your acne treatment medications. Many acne medications over-dry the skin, leaving the skin thirsty for moisture. Now that you've got your daily skin care routine down, let's get you an effective acne treatment plan to go along with it. more...

Dos and don’ts for acne - prone skin

Dos and don’ts for acne-prone skin. Acne is a common skin condition that occurs when skin pores become clogged and bacteria settles in, causing the pore to become infected. Several factors can contribute to developing acne such as oily skin, hormones, diet, skin care products and even your skin care routine. The good news is that acne is treatable and often can be controlled or even prevented with the right skin care treatment plan. Fields and Rodan explain that acne occurs when dead skin cells combine with the skin's natural oil, clumps together inside the pore and creates an ideal environment for bacteria to flourish. The good news is that, with the right combination of medicines, those with acne can enjoy skin that's as clear and healthy-looking as someone who had no acne at all. The secret is finding the right combination of medicines and skin care treatments that work for you." Caring for acne-prone skin can be tricky until you find the right combination or skin care products that work best for you. Not everyone who has acne has oily skin, and many acne skin care products can be harsh. Skin Care and A Routine

If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using. more...

My Skin Care Routine

So, without further adieu, here are the products that I have tried and can’t stop using: Best for normal to dry skin types, I prefer to use this hydrating vitamin CE serum during the cooler months, from September through March. Best for normal to oily skin types, this cult favorite keeps my skin sunspot-free and glowing from April until August — all summer long. If your skin is acne-prone or oily, I’ll be completely honest, skip the Future Derm brand (for now) and go straight towards this classic skin care staple. Studies show that using a chemical sunscreen under a physical sunscreen results in the ultimate UV protection. Look, I’m a skin care blogger, so it’s vital that I stay out of the sun religiously and avoid UV rays at all costs. At night, I would love to say that I get home and can’t wait to use skin care products, both my staples and new products I am sent to try by brands. I love the fact that it has both oil and water based formulas, so it’s sure to remove all of the makeup and dirty residue (ewww, I know). Nighttime is when I like to use products that have retinoids. I do this for two reasons: First, retinoids have been shown to thin the skin and make skin photosensitive. The debate is still out whether or not peptides actually work because they’re too big to penetrate the skin — that whole Dalton rule in dermatology — but I for one notice results whenever I use them. That said, the Future Derm Customizable Moisturizer I use has 4% niacinamide , argireline , Matrixyl, tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate , and other ingredients. So those items are the heart of my skin care routine. more...

Small changes in skin care routine can significantly

4, 2011) — — Patients with acne and rosacea are often confused about selecting appropriate skin care products, cosmeceuticals and cosmetics to add into their daily routine. They also may want to select skin care products that can help improve the overall appearance and health of the skin during treatment, especially if their medications have left their skin with redness, dryness or inflammation. “When the skin is stripped of lipids, which are part of its protective outer layer, the skin barrier is compromised and can worsen acne and rosacea,” said Dr. Scrubbing the skin will actually worsen acne, as it can remove skin lipids and can increase irritation. If patients do not use a daily moisturizer, their skin can become red and peel easily due to the drying effect of their acne medications. Moisturizers containing lipids, such as ceramides, are usually well tolerated and improve the barrier that is often compromised in patients with this condition. “Moisturizers are extremely important for both acne and rosacea patients, and the key is finding the right moisturizer for your specific skin type,” said Dr. Manufacturers of cosmetics and cosmeceuticals are continually improving their products by adding ingredients that offer many benefits to the skin, including skin affected by acne or rosacea. “The vehicles that deliver the active ingredients to the skin now contain more emollients and humectants that are soothing and non-irritating. “Patients with acne or rosacea should talk with their dermatologist to determine the best skin care products for their condition and how these can improve their overall medical therapy,” said Dr. Dermatologists understand that patients want to look good even in the face of a noticeable skin condition like acne or rosacea, and today that is entirely possible.” more...

My skin care routine - 6 tips to get rid of acne for good

For those of you who don’t know, I’ve struggled with cystic and hormonal acne since my senior year of high school and I have the lovely scars to prove it. I still love makeup and wear it when we go to dinner or out with friends, but during the day, I usually only wear mascara. Here is my regimen for sensitive and acne-prone skin: And you don’t have to buy this brand — just compare the ingredients and find something else you like. Thanks for sharing and I absolutely agree with all of your tips! I have had problems with acne in the past but I’m getting old enough now (almost 35) that my skin is dry in some places and I was drying it out too much with acne cleansers, so I have switched to a gentle Neutrogena one with one of their oil-free moisturizers and that has helped me a lot. Thanks for the post! I do the same things with napkins – and thought I was the only one! So happy for you that you have found the products that work for you! Thanks so much for the awesome tips and for the product reviews it is very helpful for those of us that suffer from acne. I use to be on a routine with my derm, but I had a baby and am still nursing so those things are not good for me. The products for oily/hormonal skin are excellent. Thanks for sharing those tips and the products you use – I haven’t heard of most of those products so I might need to try a few out :) Oil can clog the skin and if you want to reduce the number of acne breakouts you get, you have to stay away from oil based cosmetics. more...

Proper Skin Care Lays the Foundation for Successful Acne

Proper skin care lays the foundation for successful acne and rosacea treatment. 1, 2013) — Good skin care is a smart idea for everyone, but it is especially important for those who have acne and rosacea. Dermatologists are assisting patients by recommending skin care products that keep the skin hydrated to improve the overall health and appearance of the skin, resulting in the likelihood that patients will follow their treatment to its end. Keeping the skin properly hydrated is the key to successful acne therapy, and the daily use of a moisturizer has been shown to increase the skin’s ability to tolerate medications that often cause irritation. If patients do not use a daily moisturizer, their skin can become red and peel easily due to the drying effect of their acne medications. Moisturizers containing ceramides, a type of lipid that helps improve skin barrier function and adds moisture to the skin, are good choices for acne patients and those with sensitive skin or rosacea. For skin prone to acne and rosacea, Dr. Scrub the skin as you clean, because it can actually worsen acne by removing skin lipids and increasing irritation. Cosmetics can be used to help camouflage redness and pimples common with acne and rosacea, but Dr. Berson has found that if patients are instructed not to use cosmetics during treatment for acne or rosacea, then they won’t comply with their treatment. “The role of skin care cannot be underestimated in the treatment of acne and rosacea, as studies have shown that incorporating skin care products such as moisturizers into a daily skin care routine can enhance the results of prescription treatments,” said Dr. “It’s important for patients to discuss their skin care routine with their dermatologist to ensure they are using the best products for their skin condition and also maintaining good skin care habits.” more...

Tone - Toner’s role in your skin care routine is to: remove any traces of cleanser left behind after cleansing, tighten skin, prepare skin for the absorption of serums and creams, reduce the appearance of pores, and help to regulate oil production and secretion. What are serums, and why should you use them? Create Your Own Korean Skincare Routine - The Wanderlust

Then you have the extra stuff: the sheet masks and spot treatments and sleeping packs and all sorts of things. What are the must have essentials that you need? I’m here to help you create your own Korean skincare routine. First things first, keep in mind that you don’t necessarily have to use Korean skincare products in a Korean skincare routine. If you have a ton of stuff from Sephora, you can use that. Second, analyze what type of skin you have. All of these things will effect the type of products you use. One of my favorite things about Korean cosmetics is that each brand has multiple skin care lines, so if you have acne prone skin, you can head to Etude and pick up the AC Clinic line, or if you like Innisfree you can pick up the entire Jejubija line. You know you need to wash your face, use a toner, and a moisturizer. You don’t have to spend a hundreds dollars at first. Introduce new products into your routine slowly and carefully, and before you know it, you’ll have no where to put all of your Korean goodies! Cleanser A cleanser is possibly the most important thing you can buy, so make sure to buy a quality one that won’t dry out your skin. If you wear makeup, you also need to get an oil cleanser, as a good oil cleanser will break up all the makeup and dirt from your day. more...

How to Have a Good Skin Care Regime : 12 Steps

You just need the right products for your skin type, the correct techniques and the motivation to care for your skin every single day! Your skin will thank you - promise! When you wake up in the morning, wash your face . When washing your face, use a special facial cleanser or even just water and a cloth, which will be enough to keep the loose skin, oil, and dirt to an acceptable level. If you have dry skin on your hands, put some hand cream on in the morning. During the school day, you don't need to worry about your face that much. Most cleansers will both cleanse and exfoliate your skin, which are two steps in the '5 Steps to great skin'(more on that later as well). Lightweight means that it's not heavy and oily, so it won't add to the oil on your skin or clog your pores. To use a face mask, wet your face and scoop some of the mask onto your fingertips. Water will leave your skin looking hydrated and rejuvenated! In fact, washing your face more than twice a day will dry out your skin, which will actually cause it to produce more oil to make up for the lost oil. Make sure that you're not allergic to any of the products that you will be using on your face. more...

How to Create a Natural Skin Care Routine - Wellness Mama

In general, the natural oil cleansing method is a great solution for any skin type, though the combinations of oils varies based on skin type (see below). The best combination of natural skin care options varies based on skin types: Switching to gentle and natural skin care options often goes a long way toward removing excess oil production, but in the meantime, there are some natural ingredients that can help prevent breakouts and remove excess oil. Moisturizing/Toning: Those with oily skin will need less moisturizing as skin adjusts, and often, the natural oils from oil cleansing are enough. Those with skin that is not typically oily or dry and that responds well to different types of products and makeup usually adjust very quickly to natural skin care options. My skin was more oily when I was younger and as I’ve transitioned to natural skin care options, it has become more “normal” so these are the options that I use: Those with dry or aging skin often benefit immediately from natural skin care options. Often, using natural oils on the skin helps the skin to balance oil production and stop being dry to begin with. The supplements that seemed to have made the biggest difference in skin health for me are: Fermented Cod Liver Oil – for the Vitamins A, D and K, Omega-3s and Antioxidants, all which are great for the skin. Topical Magnesium Oil  seems to be the most effective for skin health. more...

The Proper Order to Apply Skin Care

The Proper Order to Apply Skin Care. How we treat our skin affects how our makeup looks and how we age. It also helps us from troublesome skin issues and can lessen signs of skin discoloration. Since the purpose of lotions and serums is to penetrate the skin, allowing active ingredients to work their magic, the order these products are applied is of the utmost importance. To ensure you’re doing it right – nourished skin and a youthful face aren’t far away – follow these steps: These nutrient-rich treatments can absorb deep into your skin providing you with vitamin C, E and a range of other helpful ingredients that will do wonders for your face. In order to fix these and moisturize your skin (creating the perfect base for concealers and eyeshadows), add an eye cream to your daily routine. In the morning you want to apply a moisturizer to banish dry skin and set the stage for makeup application. In the evening, give your face a thick slathering of lotion and let the product’s powers penetrate and repair your skin as you sleep. Do you have a magic skin care product you apply daily? more...
