The Best Beauty Products You've Probably Never Heard Of

The Best Beauty Products You've Probably Never Heard Of. When it comes to beauty, we'd like to consider ourselves in-the-know, but every now and again we're thrown a curveball. Like earlier this week, when one of the women we shot for Beauty Street Style mentioned she used Aztec Indian Healing Clay , a DIY mask that you mix with either water or apple cider vinegar. Though we were slightly suspect of the powder formulation, we whipped up a batch and slathered it on. We were slightly terrified that our skin would be scaly and bone dry, but it was the opposite actually. Check those out in the gallery below, then let us know in the comments which low-profile beauty products you love. more...

USDA Organic Skincare

While many personal care products are certified under the USDA standards and many display the USDA Organic Seal, the USDA doesn’t currently have the authority to police organic claims on personal care products that aren’t certified. In other words, any food with “organic” on the label is subject to strict standards and enforcement by the Federal government, but personal care products are not. This standard requires 95% organic ingredients and places strict restrictions on the substances that can be used in the remaining 5%. “Made with organic essential oils and extracts” – must be certified to the USDA NOP “made with organic” standard, which requires at least 70% organic ingredients and places strict restrictions on the substances that can be used in the remaining 30%. •Products making the claim “contains organic _____” – e.g “Contains organic rosemary, clove and thyme oils” – must be certified to the NSF 305 Personal Care Standard. This consensus-based standard requires at least 70% organic ingredients, and like the USDA NOP standard, places strict restrictions on the substances that can be used in the remaining 30%. With this announcement, we’re ensuring that the organic label retains its strong meaning, and that organic personal care manufacturers have to go through the same level of oversight and practice the same level of integrity as food makers currently do. This will make it easier for shoppers to trust the organic label in our stores, and help the organic personal care products market evolve and grow. Our hope is that someday the USDA will regulate organic personal care products just as it does food. In our testimony before the National Organic Standards Board last November, we expressed our strong support of the Board’s recommendation that the USDA regulate personal care products, and we commented that: more...

Whole Foods Setting Standards for Organic Skin Care

Whole Foods Setting Standards for Organic Skin Care. With skin care, this isn't the case, so Whole Foods Market is stepping up to the plate and requiring skin care manufacturers making organic claims to back it up with third-party certification by June 2011 . Joe Dickson, the quality standards coordinator at Whole Foods Market says: At Whole Foods Market, our shoppers do not expect the definition of organic to change substantially between the food and non-food aisles of our stores. We believe that the ‘organic’ claim used on personal care products should have just as strong a meaning to the ‘organic’ claim used on food products, which is currently regulated by the USDA’s National Organic Program. Going forward, beauty products that claim to be organic, must meet the following standards: Products making an "Organic" product claim - Must be certified to the USDA’s National Organic Program standard for organic (> 95%) products. Products making a "Made with Organic ________" claim - Must be certified to the USDA’s National Organic Program standard for Made with Organic (> 70%) products. Products making a "Contains Organic _______" claim - Must be certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Organic Personal Care Standard. Products listing an organic ingredient in the "Ingredients:" listing - Organic ingredient must be certified to the USDA NOP standard. For more on the guidelines check out the Whole Foods Market blog here and for more on Pangea Organics check out Pangea Organics.com. more...

At Whole Foods, organic beauty products are now the real

At Whole Foods, organic beauty products are now the real deal. The natural products giant now has third-party-certified organic body care products. Companies could label what they sell as "organic" and we just had to all cross our fingers and hope they were telling the truth, because there was no outside certification or policing of labels for body care products as there are for foods. According to a release from Whole Foods, the company was responding to customers' needs: “Believe it or not, there are no federal laws that regulate how the word ‘organic’ can be used on personal care products. Products making an “organic” product claim − Must be certified to the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) standard for organic (> 95%) products. Products making a “Made with Organic [Ingredient]” claim − Must be certified to the USDA’s National Organic Program standard for Made with Organic (> 70%) products. Products making a “Contains Organic [Ingredient]” claim − Must be certified to the NSF/ANSI 305 Organic Personal Care Standard. Products listing an organic ingredient in the “Ingredients:” listing − Organic ingredient must be certified to the USDA NOP standard. more...

Mercola Skin Care - Organic Skin Care Product

Go grab your containers of skin care products and check them against the following… You see, your skin is not only your largest organ – it's also the thinnest. Your skin is highly permeable, allowing what you apply to your skin access to your bloodstream (and thereby to the rest of your body)… Even more appalling than that is the amount of chemicals you place on your skin every year. These actions may be the easiest and least expensive things you can do to prevent damage to your skin, gain a more youthful appearance, and build a strong foundation for your pro-active natural skin care. Don't compromise your health and the health of your skin by using potential poisons. For your general health's sake, and for your skin. Whenever you apply skin care products, it is ideal to use products from nature that nourish your skin the same way you nourish your body. Now you can do the same for your skin. And you can do that by using true nutrients that help keep your skin looking its best. You can enjoy the superior nutritional benefits of acai oil in Mercola Skin Care Organic Cupuacu Day Moisturizer and Organic Acai Night Moisturizer. Organic Citrus Cleanser is a pure and mild cleanser that protects and nourishes your skin… Organic Sugar Exfoliator softly removes the outer layer of dry or flaking skin, leaving your face smooth and radiant – and using all organic ingredients that you already know and trust. Organic Acai Night Moisturizer contains food ingredients from the world over to bring you a deeply satisfying moisturizer with profound benefits for your skin. more...

Homemade skin care products — Edible Perspective

The ingredients all sound foreign to me, and I always forget the key words to look out for. So for the most part I try and take matters into my own hands. There was a big fancy machine that took a photo of your face and showed all the different layers and problem areas of your skin. After the assessment, she asked what my current skin care regimen was. Mix in the honey and apple cider vinegar with a fork until smooth. I’ve read time and time again that using coffee grounds in a skin scrub helps to tighten the skin, diminish cellulite, etc. I applied to my legs in the shower and rinsed thoroughly. I use this all year long, even in the dead of summer and on 30+ mile bike rides. Soften the coconut oil in the microwave and mix everything together until smooth. Joshua Onysko, founder of Pangea Organics, with some of his organic skin and body care products at a Macy's in New York. He is the founder and owner of Pangea Organics, whose soaps, facial muds and skin care products can be found in Macy's, Whole Foods and other retailers. Sales in the USA and four other countries reached $5.4 million in 2008, double 2007 sales. It's one of the fastest-growing organic skin care lines in the country, says Parry Andvik, whose brokerage company, Natural Rx Brokers, helps organic products get into food and pharmacy retailers. If a shopper is browsing the Pangea website, for example, listed next to a product's description and price is a link to the product's ingredient list. "We were impressed with the products, and it was clear that Joshua is a leader, a visionary and a very strong voice for the whole organic and natural lifestyle, particularly in beauty," says Christine Johnston, senior vice president of cosmetics and fragrances for Macy's East. Onysko also has established the non-profit Pangea Institute, which is aimed at providing research and education about sustainable business practices. Onysko says he can stay true to the Pangea mission because of the way his company is funded. The company is owned by him and a number of friends and family investors. "The goal of Pangaea is to remain independent forever and not sell the company," he says. Sales are about flat from last year, Onysko says, but the company won't stop introducing products. more...

Whole Foods is The New Sephora. Plus : Where Do You Buy

Plus: Where Do You Buy Your Makeup? OK, so who’s been here: You all of a sudden have plans but you don’t feel quite day-to-night (or gym-to-out) equipped because, well, it’s Sunday and you didn’t think you’d need your red lipstick or whatever, and even though you don’t really wear perfume, you feel you could use a little pick-me-up but you don’t have that on you, either? But I also thought I’d never find a replacement since there’s no natural-beauty chain (yet) and the very few places in New York where you can buy clean cosmetics in person aren’t centrally located, making the dash-in-dash-out move impossible. Some Whole Body sections are amazing (looking at you, Columbus Circle) but they’re all good enough if you ask me. I am wild about their new organics standards , they carry a great selection of many of my favorite lines, they have samples out of everything under the sun, including makeup, and the people who work the section are nice about letting you try anything you want. [UPDATE: I heard it from the horse's mouth that for anything in Whole Body, if there isn't a sample available you can just ask and they'll open one for you!] If nothing else, primping a little bit can change your mindset from “It’s downward-dog time” to “It’s interact-with-human-beings time” and you don’t need makeup to do this; I was wearing basically none at all. But back to the headline: We want to know from you: Where do you buy your natural makeup? more...
