Skin care, SPF is only half the battle. We’ve got to clean our skin and arm it with antioxidants (then UV protection) to ensure we’re really ready to face the day. To figure out how to best protect our skin from UV rays and the harmful particles suspended in the air (many of which are generated during the combustion of fossil fuels), we spoke to Debra Jaliman, M. D., a New York-based dermatologist and author of Skin Rules, about the best way to handle our morning skin-care regimens. Read on for her tips on how to tinker with the morning trifecta, no matter your skin type. Many people think, "If my skin doesn’t feel greasy, it must not be dirty." But even those with ultra-dry skin still need to cleanse in the morning, says Jaliman. “There’s oil and bacteria that’s accumulated on the skin while you’ve been sleeping all night," she says, "so it’s important to cleanse in the morning." Those with dry skin should look for a cleanser that’s creamy in consistency and stocked with hyaluronic acid, glycerin, ceramides, or other gentle moisturizers, recommends Jaliman. “The cleanser you choose is crucial in terms of not drying out your skin,” she says. But for those with oily skin, morning cleansing is a particularly important step. Jaliman suggests cleansing with a powder or glycolic- or salicylic-acid-spiked cleanser (rather than a cream) and toning the skin as well. Although those with oily skin tend to shy away from “hydrating” products, the best way for this group to get hydrated skin in the day is via a serum, since a moisturizer will just up the grease factor, says Jaliman. The best way to fight fussy skin? Look for products with short ingredient lists—like Cetaphil’s Gentle Skin Cleanser ($4, Drugstore.com )—and serums that calm and soothe.
The 10-Step Korean Skincare Routine. Step 1: The Eye Makeup Removal. Step 2: The Cleanse. Step 3: The Exfoliator. Step 4: The Refresher. It soothes and preps your skin to absorb the next step—the essence. Step 5: The Essence. Step 6: The Ampoule. Step 7: The Sheet Mask. Step 8: The Eye Cream. Step 9: The Moisturizer. Step 10: The Night Cream.
This way, I’m able to more accurately observe what each new product is doing for my skin, and if I do have a reaction to something new, I’m able to pinpoint which product is the culprit. Please note that I’m only using one product for each category at any given time, with the exception of serums and p H dependent treatments. You can check out my post about the moisture barrier, acne, and skin sensitivity for more information about this topic. This is the most affordable of my top 5 cleansers, and has been a staple of mine for a very long time. Where to Buy: You can find this cleanser at Sephora.com , where it retails for $45. Where to Buy: You can find this toner on the Silk Naturals website , where it retails for $9. This one remains my favorite – it is extremely effective and has the shortest ingredient list (less potential for irritation or product reactions). Instead, you can use BHA with your morning routine and retinol in the evening. I do think this one is great for all skin types, and oily types will probably have better luck with this sunscreen than the UV Creamy Gel. Where to Buy: This sunscreen is available on Amazon for $23 , and is available for Prime shipping.

There are a ton of whitening products in the Korean and Japanese skincare markets, and many of the multi-functioning products tout whitening properties as one of the major attributes. The nice thing about this layering technique is that you are not obligated to use Asian skincare products to do it. There are a lot of online shops as well as Amazon and Ebay sellers that carry Korean & Japanese skincare products. This is a list of online stores and sellers that I know carry authentic products from Korean and Japanese skincare brands. Wishtrend – Wishtrend is one of the first online Korean Beauty retailers to pop up on the scene, and they carry a large array of products from brands that are sometimes hard to find in other places. The selection is HUGE, products are authentic, and the prices are very, very low. They have a huge selection of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean skincare products. I Am Love Shop – Huge selection of Korean skincare products from most of the major brands, such as Etude House, Lioele, Missha, OST, Aritaum, Innisfree, Ciracle, and many others. Cosmetic Love on Amazon – This shop has a great variety of Korean cosmetics and skincare products, and the prices are very good. The Beauty Wolf – This is a newcomer to the beauty blogging scene covering a lot of Korean makeup and skincare products, as well as a few Western products.
I have normal to dry skin, not very sensitive. Cetaphil Cleanser for sensitive skin : I don’t have very sensitive skin but I still use it. It is super gentle on skin and I totally love it. I sometimes do feel that it does not give that satisfactory “clean skin” feeling but I use it only only because it is meant to maintain the PH balance of the skin and does not strip my skin of moisture. Would be repurchasing it. Would be repurchasing it in winters. L’occitane Fabulous Serum : The only serum I have ever used and I am very happy with this one. Forest Essentials Rose Water and Forest Essentials Panchpushp Facial Mist : Review HERE Totally recommend both fo these especially for summers. Totally enjoy using it but would repurchase it in winters only. Review HERE Would be picking up a light lotion next.
All of this exploration has lead to a clearer understanding of skin and what it takes to care for it. After my face is wet, I apply a pea-sized amount of 100% Pure Nourishing Carrot Facial Scrub , and in a circular motion work this into the skin for 30 seconds. I'm a believer in the saying "You get what you pay for", BUT you also have to be knowledgeable about what you're putting on your skin. Not all expensive things are good, and $18 is not bad compared to some products I've purchased in the name of skin care. Be aware that the skin absorbs everything straight into the bloodstream and can be more harmful than eating toxic things. Just think, if it was in the packaging (plastics are know to leak chemicals), it would be in the product, and then on your skin. After 30 seconds is up, use cool water to rinse the product completely off and pat skin dry (do not rub) with a clean towel. Note that sometimes in the harsh winter months if my skin is super dry I'll skip washing my face in the morning and only do it at night because water dries out your skin whether it's cold or hot. Cold water is best, because it doesn't dry out the skin as badly at hot water. None the less, it still washes the natural sebum away, and in the winter dry skin needs all the help it can get. Straightaway, before the skin completely dries, apply Trader Joe's Spa 100% Australian Tea Tree Oil (costs $6.49 and is packaged in glass) with fingers. I used way too much when I started out, and had red patches on my face where the oil had completely dried out my skin. The warmth of your fingers will help the product absorb into the skin better. This will help them stay fresh longer (especially if they are natural products) and cool products feel wonderful on the skin.
Today however is the day, and it’s just really to share with you my current daily skin care routine and the products I’ve been using! First things first I cleanse my face, morning and night is the general rule (I think that applies to just about everyone though?) In the morning I’ve been using the Laboratoires Filorga Mousse Démaquillante foam cleanser which I received in the amazing goody bag from the BBloggersxmas event! For night time cleansing I always use the Emma Hardie Cleansing Balm. Admittedly I have been lazy at times and may have skipped this once or twice in the morning, but I’m trying to be good and apply it day and night! I find it best applied at night time though because it can be a tad sticky for the day. It may not look like a lot but I like to keep things simple and uncomplicated, stress is not good for the soul! What’s your daily skincare routine at the moment?

I set out to find the right products for my skin type (dry/ sensitive skin) and try and fight back! I've only just 'perfected' this routine within the last year or so and since then I have had reasonably clear skin. Cleanser - Every morning I exfoliate my face, back and chest in the shower with the St Ives Sensitive Skin Gentle Apricot Scrub . After this I then cleanse my face with the Neutrogena Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Cream Wash . This featured in My Skin Saviours post as one of the main products that really cleared my skin. I love this and it's great for dry skin as it's a cream so doesn't dry out your skin as much as other cleansers. I apply this with a cotton wool ball (the ones in the picture are from Boots, but any one will do) all over my face and neck. This may seem like a weird product to use but it does say it can be used for spots and I like to think it kills all the bacteria off my face before I apply my makeup. I then use my eye cream and at the moment I'm mostly reaching for the balance Me. Toner - Again, I use the Simple toner and 5 pumps of the Savlon spray in the same way as in the morning. Moisturiser - Again, I use the Simple Replenishing moisturiser and the balance Me. This may seem a lot on my skin, but it all works well for me.
Know the Secret Skin Care Routine for Combination Skin. As curious as it may be, many people have facial skin that is both dry and oily at the same time. This is called combination skin type, and many consider it to be the most common facial skin type. So, if one or both of your parents have the combination skin type, chances are very great that you will as well. Signs and Symptoms of Combination Skin. Finding the right combination of skin care products can be difficult because if you focus your skin care regiment on the oily condition, then the dry areas become even more dry; and if you focus on correcting the dry areas, then the oily areas become more oily and you can end up with even more blemishes. If you have combination skin you will notice that the skin on your forehead, nose, and chin will appear shiny and oily, while the skin on your cheeks and other areas will feel tight and dry. Exfoliate: In order to reveal your healthy skin that can be hiding underneath the oiliness and dryness, you will need to exfoliate. Makeup: If you enjoy wearing makeup and have combination skin, you can first put on a hydrating primer or serum to the areas of your face that are dry. Do’s and Don’ts for Combination Skin. There are a number of things you can do and not do to avoid exacerbating your combination facial skin. However, when used only on the oily (T-zone) of the face, peels can deep clean pores and help your skin feel and look refreshed. It may take time and effort to find the right skin care regime that works best for you, but in the long run, you will be very pleased that you made the effort when you see how beautiful your skin can be.
This is my everyday skin care routine, day and night. Disclaimer: This is MY skin care routine, it’s what works for ME and MY skin. If you’ve tried it and it doesn’t work out on your skin, please don’t blame me for it or if you don’t agree with my skin care, please keep it to yourself. Originally this is for “melting off” your makeup, but I feel like you can cleanse your face with it even if you’re not wearing any makeup. This is the only face mask/exfoliator I’ve ever used and that works on me. Oh and I wash this mask off with that Body Shop face sponge! This is not really a part of my skin care routine but I figure it’s sort of is. I will make another blog post about using coconut oil on your skin and how it changed my skin. Remember it’s important to take care of your skin. Invest more into skin care rather than makeup because think of it this way: if you have a nice base for your makeup, no matter what your makeup will always look flawless!
If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using.

I have oily/combination skin, as most Asians do, and where I come from the winter is very drying for my skin. A plus of this cleanser is that it is made without parabens, sulfates, and phthlates, so it is gentle on the skin. Tea is also known to soothe and calm the skin. This toner is really good for winter AND summer because it soothes redness and fights pimples without over-drying your skin. I would be cautious if you're someone with dry or sensitive skin, as the tea tree may be a bit too drying for dry skin and may be a bit strong for sensitive skin. The grapefruit water contains a lot of Vitamin C, which brightens your complexion and promotes collagen production, which is essential for youthful skin. Due to grapefruit's fruit acidity, this ingredient also has antibacterial properties, and is good for controlling oil production. I recommend this product for everyone and anyone. I think this stuff is a miracle-maker, and it has worked amazingly for me. This moisturizer is heavily endorsed by my K-idol, Bae Suzy, and is awesome for the hot and humid summer season. Vitamin B 3 is responsible for soothing the skin with its anti-inflammatory properties and zinc helps to control oil production. Personally, I think it is a bit heavy to use as a morning moisturizer in the summer because I have oily skin, but if you have dry skin or even normal skin, then this may work well for you. Some emulsions are more watery than this one, but I was between choosing this emulsion and the cream from the same IOPE line. Locust tree flower helps to soothe and calm inflammation of the skin. Tea tree leaf oil is one of the best natural remedies for acne, as it has antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties.
Skincare Routine For Dry Acne Prone Skin. I am sharing Skincare Routine For Dry Acne Prone Skin. During my last visit to dermatologist she told me that I have adult acne and I need to change my skincare routine. Sebamed Cleansing Foam – I apply it on my face and leave it there for 2-5 minutes and wash it off. I have been using this product for over a month now and can say that my occasional bumps and breakouts are at bay . I rarely see a breakout and very few acne on my jawline. I like Sebamed as a brand and decided to try out this eye cream. I use Neutrogen Acne Free wash (1 pump) during the night, it takes away all dirt and residue of makeup easily without making skin dry. Sebamed Q 10 Eye Cream – Apply it under and on orbital bone. Supatret C Cream – I use it to spot treat my acne, as and when I see them surfacing.
I have been obsessed with skin products ever since I was a young girl. :) And then came Clinique's (3) step program (of course, purchases were coordinated according to the "Bonus Time" free gifts that we watched the newspaper for.) Every routine was completed, of course, with a chapstick application from Avon. I don't expect you to be as nutso as I am over products, but in case you'd like to know, here are the products I use now. My current routine listed here is only partly all-natural, and I've been wanting to adjust that. And, as you can imagine, I'm just so happy to have an excuse to try some new products. I bought one on Craigslist (I have this model, here ), got some new brushes, and have been loving it ever since. I started this routine after reading about it on The Daily Muse (see here on Rebecca's blog for the water to ACV ratio). Also, after using this for awhile + being Dairy-Free, I was at Khiel's and they asked the old question, "Are you oily or dry?" NEITHER! I got some in a gift bag at a dinner at Alt Summit last January, and I've been savoring the stuff ever since. But I really like it - and it isn't causing any problems. I put this chapstick on every morning and night - and keep some by my computer. So tell me, have you used any products for over a decade (or two?) Or at least amuse us all with your 80s or 90s skincare routine.

The Drugstore Skin-Care Products Kim Kardashian Loves for Winter. Sure, Kim Kardashian may live in perpetually sunny and warm Los Angeles, but that doesn't mean she doesn't change up her skin-care routine for the winter months. She also shared the products she uses during the winter, and some of them are surprisingly inexpensive. The biggest cause of dry winter skin, says Lancer, is heater overuse. For her moisturizer, Kardashian favors Lancer Skincare Intensive Night Treatment or Olay Regenerist Recovery Cream. Lancer also suggests working in a vitamin C treatment during the colder months, especially if you live that Kardashian life and spend lots of time skiing. All of that skin-care advice is sound, but the most crucial tip is this: "The most important product in your winter routine is sunscreen," says Lancer.
In general, the natural oil cleansing method is a great solution for any skin type, though the combinations of oils varies based on skin type (see below). The best combination of natural skin care options varies based on skin types: Switching to gentle and natural skin care options often goes a long way toward removing excess oil production, but in the meantime, there are some natural ingredients that can help prevent breakouts and remove excess oil. Moisturizing/Toning: Those with oily skin will need less moisturizing as skin adjusts, and often, the natural oils from oil cleansing are enough. Those with skin that is not typically oily or dry and that responds well to different types of products and makeup usually adjust very quickly to natural skin care options. My skin was more oily when I was younger and as I’ve transitioned to natural skin care options, it has become more “normal” so these are the options that I use: Those with dry or aging skin often benefit immediately from natural skin care options. Often, using natural oils on the skin helps the skin to balance oil production and stop being dry to begin with. The supplements that seemed to have made the biggest difference in skin health for me are: Fermented Cod Liver Oil – for the Vitamins A, D and K, Omega-3s and Antioxidants, all which are great for the skin. Topical Magnesium Oil seems to be the most effective for skin health.
Everything here with an asterisk (*) is an actual, government certified organic product, and of the non-USDA products, two are from the EU and certified organic there, one is just an actual plant, and another only contains one non-certified ingredient. And if you have additional product suggestions, I'd love to see them in the comments! I use John Masters Organics Lavender Hydrating Mist * because it has The Perfect Spray™. Organic brands are notorious for having terrible packaging, but not the John Masters atomizer; it's a delight to use. I like to imagine the Chanel lavender farmers and Choupette applauding politely every time I spray. I'm hooked on the mango sorbet-colored Calendula Coconut Oil from Kuumba *. After that, I wet a muslin washcloth in warm water and gently work the oil off. I'm a wuss with exfoliation—you're supposed to treat your face like silk, after all—so I bring out the konjac sponge for daily decongesting and brightening. If my skin is dry, the way it was every damn day this NY winter and nonexistent spring, the next step is rose hip oil *. It's 1) deeply hydrating, and 2) deeply orange—like natural self-tanner without the risk of becoming a human tangerine. I have dry skin, so I use the Supple Sunshine Rosemary Lavender Day Cream *. I've known about neem for years, but the concentrated oil has a nuanced bouquet reminiscent of rancid diesel fuel, so I'd avoided putting it directly on my face. It started healing up the spots on my neck and jaw overnight, and unlike tea tree oil it's not drying. All its ingredients except the immortelle oil are certified organic, so this one doesn't quite make the USDA cut, but it's amazing and I felt the brand attempts to be as organic as possible, so I included it. Their day cream and rose hip oil are both fantastic, but for the purposes of this story, I wanted to focus on their Echium & Argan Gentle Eye Cream .

This one is focused on my nighttime skincare routine, using all Korean skincare products, and following the typical Korean skincare routine. It’s wintertime now, so my skincare routine is focused on getting the most amount of moisture into my skin as possible. I use one pump and massage it into my slightly damp skin. I use this one when I feel like my skin is extra dry or dull, as it’s a very moisturizing toner. If it’s around that time of the month, or I feel like my skin might be having some issues, I use the AC Care Water Essence, which I reviewed here . Before Winter really hit, I was using the AC Care Bee’s Cure Serum and the Repair Complex as my serum and emulsion, but I found that my skin didn’t feel moisturized enough (winter is rough), so I switched to the Missha Super Aqua Marine Cell Intensive Serum and Control Emulsion. I pump the serum into my hands, rub them together and gently pat it on my face. My nighttime routine is when I pile on the moisture, so that’s why I use both a cream and sometimes a sleeping pack. I use the Missha Super Aqua Ultra Water-Full Cream, which was totally an impulse buy after the sales woman tested a bit on my hand and I sort of melted. It’s perfect for people with dry skin, or for people who want a little moisture boost in the winter. I like this cream so much I actually use it in the daytime too. After applying my cream, I will sometimes opt to add just that extra layer of moisture and use my Nature Republic Super Aqua Max Deep Moisture Sleeping Pack. And I know some people may think that my skin must look like an oil spill by the time I go to bed, but nope. That’s the beauty of Korean products, they all seem to magically absorb into my skin, instead of just sitting on top of it.
There are benefits and drawbacks to each, but you should be familiar with all the treatments and products before digging in. Get To Know Your Skin.
