Plus, your skin type can change with everything from the weather to your stress levels (even your period). Even more important is to realize that you can have more than one skin type: sensitive and dry, oily and blemish-prone, sun damaged with acne. The more you know about everything that affects skin type, the more you'll be able to help your skin finally look and feel as normal as possible! What Influences Your Skin Type. You can never know your real skin type if you are using products containing ingredients that create problems. For example, if you are using products that contain irritants you can create dry skin and still make your oily skin worse (think dry skin on top, oily underneath). If you overly scrub your skin you can damage the barrier of skin causing more wrinkles and dry skin.and on and on. In order to know for sure how your skin really behaves, you have to figure out if your products are to blame. How to Identify Your Real Skin Type. When you finally discover what your skin type(s) really is/are, you can make better decisions about the products in your skin-care routine. The base that these (or any) products are formulated in (lotion, cream, gel, serum, or liquid) should match the needs of your skin type in the area that has that concern. You may need separate products to deal with the different skin types on your face because you can't treat all skin types with the same products. Infographic: How To Find Your Skin Type. Follow these simple steps to determine which type of skin you have and learn which types of products are right for you.
Wash your face with oil. Washing your face with oil is known as the oil cleansing method. To clean your face with oil, create a mixture of castor oil and sunflower oil. Apply the oil to your skin using circular motions. Once the wash cloth is cold, run it under warm water again and use to gently wipe the oil from your face. For more information (and quick demonstration) watch Stephanie’s video: How to Wash Your Face Using the Oil Cleansing Method. Moisturize your body with oil. To moisturize with oil, simply keep a bottle of oil in the bathroom and apply all over after a shower (and after you have dried off). Simply apply a small amount of oil to the outer corner of your eye, where the wrinkles form. Be careful not to get oil in your eye, as this could potentially clog the tear ducts. The moisturizing properties of oil make it perfectly suited to softening and smoothing fine lines and wrinkles around the eyes. Do you use oil as part of your skin care routine?
This way, I’m able to more accurately observe what each new product is doing for my skin, and if I do have a reaction to something new, I’m able to pinpoint which product is the culprit. Please note that I’m only using one product for each category at any given time, with the exception of serums and p H dependent treatments. You can check out my post about the moisture barrier, acne, and skin sensitivity for more information about this topic. This is the most affordable of my top 5 cleansers, and has been a staple of mine for a very long time. Where to Buy: You can find this cleanser at Sephora.com , where it retails for $45. Where to Buy: You can find this toner on the Silk Naturals website , where it retails for $9. This one remains my favorite – it is extremely effective and has the shortest ingredient list (less potential for irritation or product reactions). Instead, you can use BHA with your morning routine and retinol in the evening. I do think this one is great for all skin types, and oily types will probably have better luck with this sunscreen than the UV Creamy Gel. Where to Buy: This sunscreen is available on Amazon for $23 , and is available for Prime shipping.

Home / Skincare Tips / Caroline Hirons’ Expert Night Routine for your skin. Caroline Hirons’ Expert Night Routine for your skin. Your night-time routine is your chance to apologise to your skin for the wear and tear of the day and is crucial if you want to get the best out of your skin. Apply the product to dry skin and use a wet, warm cloth to remove. Don’t fill up the sink and splash, utterly pointless – you’ll just be adding all the dirt back to your skin! Once the skin is cleansed, toned and comfortable, reach for a serum. Serums are usually the lightest formulation and so are the first thing to go on the skin post cleansing and toning. A serum can target all manner of concerns but is ideally placed for getting anti-oxidants and repairing ingredients into the skin. Get it on your skin quickly and move to the next stage which is… Oils are available for every skin type and it’s usually good sense to purchase one that describes your concerns. If your skin is oily and you deprive it of oil, it will over-compensate. If you have time and want to give your routine a little oomph, take extra care to massage the oil in to the skin. You don’t want to overload the skin. You can use the best products in the world, but if you are dehydrated and sleep-deprived it will show on your face. Let me know how you get on, and leave your night time skincare questions in the comments below.
The first step: find your skin type. This isn't always the case, as you can have oily and dry areas in any area, but many people with Combination skin have this pattern. But what if your skin is perpetually dry and oily at the same time, with dry flakes nestled next to, or on top of, clogged pores and blemishes? What if the more creams you apply, the more oily and clogged your skin becomes, but you're still a flake monster? In the west, we learn that dry skin needs oil, and oily skin needs oil-free products, the end. Combination skin is a rebel, being a bit of both, but you can avoid putting products on your t-zone and then just blot up the steady stream of sebum seeping from your brow. If your skin is dry, put more moisturizer on it, more and more and more . In fact, the more heavy, oily, rich, and occlusive products you apply on your flake-festooned face, the more and more dehydrated your skin becomes, because those occlusive products are actually forming a barrier to keep water out, perpetuating the cycle. Now that the layers of old buildup are out of the way, you are free to focus on re-balancing the missing water from your skin. If you have a Combination skin type, avoid layering the oilier products in your oily areas and keep them to your dry areas, but the watery products can be layered all over.
Skincare routine for dry skin. Dry skin can be one of the most difficult to create an appropriate skincare routine for, when every other product contains an irritant, colour or fragrance which will inflame dry patches and make sensitivity worse. Choose simple, unfragranced, unperfumed products and use gentle cloths or clean fingers to add and remove them to the skin, in order to reduce irritation on dry patches. In one jar, the Recuperating Cream will smooth fine lines, repair dry patches, keep skin hydrated and work with the skin’s natural repair process to prevent dryness from returning. Look for companies that have transparency in their ingredients and will tell you exactly what active ingredients will be going to work on your skin. Our products contain only the ingredients that provide direct benefits to the skin, such as Lanolin, a natural skin protector and blackcurrant oil, which is known for its anti-aging, anti-inflammatory properties. Moisturising is the most crucial element of a skincare routine for dry skin. Without a good mosturiser which will create a strong base, anything else applied to the skin will look flaky and cracked. A good facial moisturiser should act as a make-up base, removing the need for primer which could cause irritation and dryness and ensuring that products glide onto skin where blemishes and dry patches have already been treated. If your skin is not receiving enough water the lack of hydration will present itself by making the skin dry, tight and flaky – and more prone to problems in the future. Your skin can often feel quite tight, and flaky skin is not uncommon. You feel as though you can’t moisturise enough and your skin sometimes feels uncomfortable after cleansing. You may also suffer from sensitivity and you find that perfumed products can leave your skin looking angry. You always feel like your skin is shiny and you don’t feel like you can use any moisturiser, in case it makes you more oily. Change your skincare seasonally; you need heavier formulas during the winter months when your skin becomes drier, during summer opt for a lighter moisturiser which is oil-free. Remember that your skincare needs will change as you age and on your environment. The moisturiser you used in your twenties probably won’t be right for your skin in your forties. If you live in a busy city, your skin is more prone to pollutants and you may need a more intensive cleanser. Finding the perfect skincare routine can feel like mission impossible, so we’ve designed this guide to help you create a system that suits you and your skin.

I always think that it’s worth spending a little more on a serum – read my serum post here – but I like the three I’ve picked because they are nice and hydrating and straightforward. The Vichy Aqualia is particularly lovely, and my pick of the three – that’s £16.15 here . The Aloe one is quite soothing and calming, that’s £12 here . If you want to spend more then read the other reviews here on the site – there’s a link below. My picks with SPF are from No7 (from £12.50 here ), because they always seem a good solid choice and I get on well with them, and the Avon ANEW SPF 50 that I reviewed last year . I like Toleriane Ultra (£14.85 here ) for calming down angsty, sensitive skin and then the Hydraphase for long-term hydration. I like it a lot, and it’s reduced to £19.99 at the moment here which is something of a boon! Olay’s Eye Swirl does have some nice ingredients worth writing home about, and you can read more on it here. The Omega Rich Face Oil is very lovely and costs £14 – I can never see it in stock online, but it’s well worth checking for when you’re out shopping. Just two here, for the moment. The Weleda one is nice, just very simple and plain, great if you want something very natural but without essential oils – it’s about £15 but only a tenner on Amazon .
If you have to touch your face, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water - or alternatively, use a face towel. Determine your skin type and buy skin care products to suit your skin type. This is an incredibly important step because if you buy products that aren't appropriate for your skin, they will be incredibly ineffective, and may worsen the situation. Dry Skin-If your skin feels very tight and is noticeably flaky in areas, then you have dry skin. If your face is visibly shiny, and literally feels slightly wet to the touch then you have oily skin. If you have oily skin, you should tone, exfoliate, use a spot treatment, and lightly moisturize once in a while. If you have combination skin, you tend to get oily around your nose, chin, and forehead area, and dry around your cheeks. If you have sensitive skin, use a moisturizer, cleanser, and spot treatment all suitable for sensitive skin. Apply the cleanser and massage it into your skin in upwards, circular motions. By restoring your skin to its natural p H, you also make it more resistant against bacteria and micro-organisms. So after cleansing and toning you should moisturize with a face moisturizer for your skin type. If you haven't applied enough moisturizer and your skin still feels a little tight, then apply a bit more. Your skin needs to get used to the frequency of being treated, and to the products you're using.

It's best to wash your face twice a day, but if you can manage only once, do it in the evening: Never sleep in your makeup, says Linder. To ensure that you remember to use it, keep the bottle near your toothpaste; apply it all over your face, neck, décolleté, and— whenever they're exposed—the tops of your ears.

The Best Routine for Your Skin. What is a good skin care routine and how to get one for yourself | The two things that come to mind when discussing the best skin care routine for your skin are: Part 2: How to get a good skin care routine. Defining what makes a skin care routine good and how to get a good skin care routine for yourself will help you understand what exactly is needed to make your skin the most beautiful it can be. Part 1: What exactly is a good skin care routine? Everyone should follow a good skin care routine. You want to take care of your skin, whether you have acne or not, because your skin is the largest organ on your body that protects you from the sun, wind, and rain. A basic skin care routine has four steps, performed twice a day (once in the morning and once at night without the sunscreen component): If your skin is oily and moisturizer makes it even oilier, then you can skip that part of your routine. There are no strict rules for a good skin care routine. It all depends on your skin type and what your skin likes. And you definitely don’t want a skin care routine that makes your skin worse. A skin care routine should make your skin better! Figuring out how to get your perfect skin care routine and choosing the right products is the next thing to do .
Having this cleanser back in my routine not only helps to reduce inflamed blemishes, but it gives my skin a bright, clear complexion and takes care of dry patches too. The Vedani Botanicals No 21 Cleanser is a more recent addition to my cleansing routine and I like to use this as my second cleanse, to make sure I've rid all my make-up and to thoroughly cleanse my skin. The ingredients in this include hemp oil, tamanu oil, hazelnut oil and neroli essential oil which help to clear my blocked pores and spots. It is 100% natural and 97.8% organic so it really is one of the purest cleansers you could buy. I love using this one when I feel like my skin is congested as it has exfoliating properties thanks to the rice bran, but it also helps to clear my skin, especially the blackheads on my nose and chin, and reduce spot size in just a couple of days, thanks to the willowbark and lavender essential oil. I love using the Bodhi & Birch Rosa Rosa Toner after cleansing, which is actually aimed at those with normal/dry skin however the ingredients in it work really well with my skin to hydrate it, but not too much, whilst still offering ingredients that help with blemishes such as orange blossom and chamomile. I like to use facial oils in the morning and evening so I'll separate these into two categories. This oil is clear, unscented and you can barely tell you've applied oil to your skin as it sinks in so quickly (but in a good way) and I love to use this under make-up as it just makes the perfect base. It has sea buckthorn and chia seed oil and keeps my skin looking clear and blemish-free. My skin absolutely loves anything neroli and this oil helps to clear up my skin, give me a brighter and smoother complexion and it smells amazing. My skin loves the moisturisers from Therapi Honey Skincare, especially the Orange Blossom one and at the minute I am using their Propolis+ Ultra Radiance Cream . It has moisturising honey, beeswax and propolis to keep dry skin at bay but also keep my skin looking clear and glowy.

For cleansing and removing my makeup, I have been using the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Natural Lift and Sculpt Moringa Cleansing Balm (what.a.long.name!). It is totally worth the hype and I adore it! Mine is the 100ml one and it came in the Emma Hardie Amazing Face Set from QVC ( here) I can't imagine my routine without toning my skin and I have been using two products for this step: the Jurlique I switch between the two of them and also use them to set my makeup or refresh it during the day. * It is really lovely and I will be reviewing it on the blog soon. I am trying to use up my Emma Hardie Amazing Face Hydrating and Firming Treatment Moisturiser, so that's the one I have been reaching for the most. It is the Natural Lift and Sculpt Firming Eye Serum. It is much lighter than the face cream and it has an amazingly silky texture. It is very hydrating and it reduces the appearance of fine lines. Another eye cream in the lineup is the Weleda Wild Rose Smoothing Eye Cream * I tend to use this one in the morning and the Emma Hardie one at night. I wasn't impressed with it at the beginning, but I am addicted now and as soon as it runs out, I will repurchase it. If you use it around the breakout, it will really dry your skin, so be careful with the application. I can honestly say that this is the best spot treatment I have ever tried and paying £13 for 10ml was the right thing to do! It is a hydrating mist, much cheaper than the beauty Elixir and without the strong scent.
Skin care routine. She was telling me that consistency is good for your skin the same way routine watering is good for your orchids. Here we break down the steps to get you on your way to glorious skin. You should customize this routine with products for your skin type and problem areas. And remember that just like your wardrobe, good skin care is both age appropriate and seasonal. Cleansing removes impurities like dirt, makeup, and grime and clears your skin so that products can better absorb. (People with dry and sensitive skin will want to cleanse only once a day to avoid drying out the skin.)* Be careful not to tug or pull your skin as you do this. The basic skin care routine is about maintenance – it keeps your skin functioning smoothly. It also helps your skin better absorb product. *After cleansing, some people use a toner, but be careful: many toners contain alcohol and can dry out or irritate your skin. Your skin needs that underlying sebum, so you don’t want to strip away all oil with a toner.
I love the variety of products you use – your skin looks refreshed! My sister used the Korres wild rose cleanser and it smells so nice. For how long have you been useing the Korres cleanser by now? I seem to have quite similar skin but I’m afraid that using an exfoliating cleanser on a daily basis would irritate my skin in the long run, resulting in dry, red patches, more oiliness and more breakouts. My routine has also been carefully honed and I’ve stuck to the same products for a while now. I love the Modern Friction and have been buying it for years. Mine is super minimal since I have really sensitive skin, and breaks out into a rash at the mention of a new product, so I hardly ever change it up. And it seems like you and I have similar skin types, so I think I might just have to try that serum. I really want to try this Antipodes Day Cream and also their eye cream! Love the video! And I loved the video, especially the part where you still had the product on your hands and you had to put your hair in a tie lol! Alpha H’s products seem to be the best for me at the moment, saving my skin from this awful weather! I really want to try the Korres Wild Rose Exfoliating Cleanser as I have sensitive skin & this sounds like a gentle way of keeping my skin looking fresh & getting rid of the dead skin.
Everything here with an asterisk (*) is an actual, government certified organic product, and of the non-USDA products, two are from the EU and certified organic there, one is just an actual plant, and another only contains one non-certified ingredient. And if you have additional product suggestions, I'd love to see them in the comments! I use John Masters Organics Lavender Hydrating Mist * because it has The Perfect Spray™. Organic brands are notorious for having terrible packaging, but not the John Masters atomizer; it's a delight to use. I like to imagine the Chanel lavender farmers and Choupette applauding politely every time I spray. I'm hooked on the mango sorbet-colored Calendula Coconut Oil from Kuumba *. After that, I wet a muslin washcloth in warm water and gently work the oil off. I'm a wuss with exfoliation—you're supposed to treat your face like silk, after all—so I bring out the konjac sponge for daily decongesting and brightening. If my skin is dry, the way it was every damn day this NY winter and nonexistent spring, the next step is rose hip oil *. It's 1) deeply hydrating, and 2) deeply orange—like natural self-tanner without the risk of becoming a human tangerine. I have dry skin, so I use the Supple Sunshine Rosemary Lavender Day Cream *. I've known about neem for years, but the concentrated oil has a nuanced bouquet reminiscent of rancid diesel fuel, so I'd avoided putting it directly on my face. It started healing up the spots on my neck and jaw overnight, and unlike tea tree oil it's not drying. All its ingredients except the immortelle oil are certified organic, so this one doesn't quite make the USDA cut, but it's amazing and I felt the brand attempts to be as organic as possible, so I included it. Their day cream and rose hip oil are both fantastic, but for the purposes of this story, I wanted to focus on their Echium & Argan Gentle Eye Cream .
Skincare Tips: Best Skin Care Routine For Sensitive Skin. However, for those of us living in India, our skin is especially sensitive. And, typically, when foam is present, that can mean that strong surfactants such as sulfates are in present in your soap. While these surfactants give you a great foaming experience and help in cleansing, they can also cause skin sensitivity and dryness if the p H of the wash is not modified. This is because the p H of these strong surfactants are 8 and above, while our skin has a p H level of 5.5, causing dryness, skin barrier breakdown and irritation, especially for sensitive skin. Well, parabens are preservative agents that help ensure that bacteria or fungus do not grow in your skin care products. In already sensitive skin, your risk of skin allergy is higher than regular skin, so avoiding common allergens like parabens are important! So, look only for skin care that is paraben-free to reduce your risk of rashes. Fragrance is essentially ubiquitous in all skin care products and is a hard thing to avoid. Now, while your average person can wear fragrance their whole life without any problems, a person with sensitive skin has a much higher risk of getting rashes. In sensitive skin, your skin is more open to developing allergies, to products and to the sun. So, using a good sunscreen is vital to protecting your skin from this harmful effect. Sensitive skin tends to be redder and more reactive to manipulation or pressure.

Here are the steps for a typical Korean skin care routine: Most people think toners are useless/overkill/drying to the skin, but if you pick the right toner for your skin type, it will be well worth your money. While many Western toners are designed to simply balance your skin's p H levels, many Asian toners aim to do that AND hydrate the skin with nutrients. I like to think that this is THE product to use when you're unhappy or unsatisfied with your skin in someway. Okay, so emulsion may not be for everyone, so depending on the season and/or your skin type, you may or may not need to use am emulsion. If you have oily skin, you may not need to use emulsions in your daily skin care routine. That way, your skin can heal while you sleep (which is, by the way, super important to your skincare routine!), and you wake up with beautiful, radiant skin :) You would use the exfoliator or peel after your gentle cleanser and before your toner. Sheet masks are great for any skin types, and should be used depending on your skin type. Depending on the season, the condition of your skin, etc., you may want to use sheet masks 1-3 times a week.
